The purpose of Wintershall’s art programme Wintershall has over a long period supported art, and used it as a source of joy, inspiration and provocation. Good art invites us to really see ourselves – if we dare.

In Kassel, our headquarters hometown, Documenta, the world’s most important exhibition of modern and contemporary art takes place every five years, and lasts 100 days. Since the beginning in 1955, it has grown from 135 000 visitors to 860 000 in 2012. This shows the importance and power of art.

Our art programme – as seen in our main office in Norway – consists of 51 different works of art made by 24 different artists. This is art of high quality, showing different and new techniques and modes of expression. Many of these pieces have been specially made for us.

Our intention is to use the art in an interactive way to contribute to our personal development and to our company’s growth as a whole.

We want our art to stimulate our senses, challenge and provoke. At the same time we believe our interaction with art will also con-firm and build our identity, and contribute to more courage in our creative and professional hunt for unique values in the process of creating profit and building our company’s culture.

TARZAN SITHOLE

(b. 1975, Harare, Zimbabwe)

Tarzan and his twin brother Test (also a sculptor) completed high school in 1992 and became apprentices for the well-known second-generation sculptors Witness and Lameck Bonjisi.

While Test tried his luck in football for some years, Tarzan continued working closely with the Bonjisi family and some of his works reflect some similar characteristics.

Even Tarzan’s earliest work displayed tremendous talent. Tarzan appears to have no or little knowledge of European sculpture and has probably never even seen a picture of Michelangelo’s ‘David’. Yet, Tarzan’s sculpture ‘The Slave’ from 1999 is very similar to this sculpture. But here the surface rock has not been smoothed. Rather, he left ‘The Slave’ with rough chisel marks, giving the impression that the subject has been harshly treated.

PØBEL

Pøbel; (meaning: roughly, hooligan) is a pseudonymous Norwegian street artist based in Stavanger. He is best known for the Getto spedalsk (Ghetto leperous) project, decorating abandoned buildings in at the Lofoten islands in the north of Norway, along with notable collaborator “Dolk”. Both were later commissioned to decorate the central railway stations in both Oslo and Trondheim.

Also known for his project “terra Nullius” (streetart in nowhere land)

One of Norway’s foremost street artists. His work all over Europe has been documented in a number of books on the subject. His stencil paintings are mostly sight gags.

One series, for example, portrays superheroes such as Superman and Batman in decrepit old age.

He is probably the first artist who have painted a project on a dead spermwhale.

Pøbels age and real name is not officially known.

WORD TO MOTHER

(Undisclosed date of birth, artist stems from a place near the sea, UK)

Word to Mother started doing graffiti in 1995 and went on to study a degree in illustration. Born and raised in a small English seaside town, Word To Mother was never far from a stony beach, crashing waves and somewhat salty sea veterans.

This environment has been a major influence in Word to Mother’s work and its impact can be seen throughout his drawings and paintings. His looseness of line, fluidity of style and the energy present in each and every painting make his work and approach truly unique. Word To Mother has fast gained a firm and loyal following. His popularity was confirmed during the show ‘Till the Hot Runs Cold’, where the artist sold out on the opening night.

Even with shows scheduled for London (where the artist currently resides), San Francisco and LA – his artwork ensures that no matter where in the world he travels, he’s never far from his home-town port.
