Katy Quinn Principal, Strode College

Welcome to Strode College’s End of Year Show 2020Strode has held an end of year Art Show for several decades and the staff and students were determined to not let Covid-19 stand in the way of this well-established tradition. So the 2020 End of Year Show marks another innovative and creative approach through an E-book, building on the more traditional, historical venues such as Crispin Hall and Moorlands Factory.Typically, I’d be welcoming you in person to our End of Year show, an annual event that is pivotal in the Art and Design calendar. But this year I am welcoming you virtually and am delighted that we can still showcase the amazing artwork that is testament to the efforts and skills of students and staff from Creative Arts and Design. Quite clearly, this year we needed to reconsider how to celebrate and share the work undertaken in the visual arts; hopefully you will enjoy the work that is presented in this book and even recognise some of our artists and their work. It is pleasing to see that range of disciplines have been explored and are well represented by the students in Art and Design. I hope you enjoy the references in props and set design to ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’ which was a joint venture between our visual and performing arts team. We now need to find a suitable space in the College to showcase “Audrey!” Other positive collaborations include the live shoe design brief undertaken with Clarks design and innovation team, which provides our students with a wonderful insight into corporate design. In an era of resourcefulness our students have found ways to use their artistic ability to support others. By example, Amy Anderson and Phoebe Cutler of UAL L3 Extend-ed Diploma in Art & Design has been generating digital portraits for a nominal fee of £3 with all proceeds being donated to the National Bailout collective. Progression from Strode remains very strong, with students accepted at prestigious HE institutions including Central St Martins, London MET University, Chelsea UAL London, Falmouth University, AUB Bournemouth and UWE Bristol. All in all, it has been an incredibly busy and positive year and while I am delighted to share this book with you, I hope that next year we will all be able to meet face to face and resume our more traditional experiences which celebrates this wonderful talent at the End of Year exhibition 2021.

While the advent of the pandemic has impacted on one of the most exciting points in the art departments calendar. It is clear from the evidence in this book and the wonderful images of the events that have taken place over the academic year, the art department has enjoyed a terrifically active and vibrant year.As artists we value the opportunity to view others work and study the role of visual language in the world around us, this is clear the ample educational visits and guest speakers have been able to incorporate this year. Such inspirational sources include visits to the Tim Walker and Mary Quant exhibitions at the V&A, RAMM in Exeter, Warner Bros studio, Lacock Abbey, Leica Gallery, Alexander McQueen headquarters, Textiles Red Cross Project, Lucien Freud exhibition at the RA, and for our international visit, a wonderful residential in New York. Our students have worked with Rose Hubbard’s creative photography workshop, and with Chris Dono-ghue, Architect partner in awarding winning architects practice Wootton Donoghue. Our collaborative projects can be seen in the prop and set making for StrodeCollege's production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and the Zombie workshop with students from the hair and beauty curriculum. Our themes as an art department often reflect current affairs, it is no surprise that this year has had a greater focus upon sustainability and reducing plastic in soci-ety. The year launched with a brief titled ‘Fabrication’ and work with guest speaker and artist Fiona Campbell, who held an exhibition at Shepton Prison as part of the B-wing group. In addition, our students participated in a local litter pick with a viewto both conserving the local landscape and obtaining materials to refashion intoartistic works. Finally, it is with great pride that I’d like to acknowledge the efforts made by the stu-dents and staff before, during and after lockdown. The success of the progressionthat students have made in their study and forwards, to wonderful opportunities tostudy Architecture, Graphics, Fashion, Photography at degree level and of coursemany other creative routes is a testament to the community that exists in the teamand one that I hope they take forward in their respective creative paths.I hope you enjoy the academic year presented in this book and join us in 2021 forour End of Year Show.

Course Overview: This exciting and experimental course provides opportunities to explore art-based textiles practice. There are options to focus on costume, fashion, interiors, printed surfaces, stitch or a more conceptual approach to textiles as fine art, we aim to facilitate an individually focused learning programme and work with you to realise your ambitions. We invite alumni and professional artists and other creative practitioners to run workshops and master classes with our students and love to go on trips to enrich the experience. Many students progress to working in the creative industries, degree courses around the UK or apply to our very successful Art and Design Foundation Diploma at Strode.

“Sue & Alice would like to say a fond farewell to our talented Textiles superstars, it has been an absolute pleasure working with you all and we wish you all the very best for a creative future. Whatever you do with your lives and wherever life takes you, we hope we have given you some skills to make it more fun! All the very best and please keep in touch.” Sue Green and Alice Bowen

Doris Southcott FundThe Doris Southcott fund was set up primarily as a bursary fund for those studying Textiles & Fashion, aged between 16-25 yrs old and living in Somerset. The Textiles department successfully bid for a large award of funds in 2016. The trustees awarded a further amount in 2017 as the fund closed.

The fund supports students in several ways, such as: awarding ravel bur-saries for university interviews, subsidising trips and visits to exhibitions, funding enrichment opportunities by bringing artists and creative practition-ers into college to run workshops and master classes. We also support individual student projects where costs for materials are prohibitive, as we don’t want creative ambition to be curtailed when finance is an issue. We have purchased equipment and specialist resources for our textiles stu-dents to use and would normally sponsor 5 annual awards at the End of Year Show.

We are really proud that we have been able to support so many students across the art and design disciplines, as well as our textiles students with this incredible fund.

Course Leader Allan Mower

Course Overview: A Level Photography is a wonderful chance to build skills in observing and recording the visual world. Al-though a very practical creative Art & Design subject, it also hones technical skills in darkroom, digital and studio photography. It discusses aesthetics, genres, and the role of photography in mass communication. Students have great freedom to choose their own project subjects.

“These two years have ended strangely, but I am still proud to have taught you all. I have really enjoyed seeing your projects develop over time, and would have loved to see your exam projects finish properly. Your year has made some of the best most mature and challenging photography projects to come out of Strode, and so I thank you all.”

L3 Extended DiplomaCourse Leader Chris Loughran

Course Overview: The Extended Diploma is a full-time art & design programme equivalent to taking three A Levels. It is a diagnostic course which affords students the opportunity to experience and experiment within a wide variety of art and design disciplines; for example, fine art, painting and sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, interior design, fashion and textiles, photography and film making. Students are encouraged to demonstrate their ‘creative intelligence’ through practical making skills and the recording of developmental decision making and critical evaluation. The majority of candi-dates progress onto specialist higher education courses at university. Portfolio and exhibition opportunities, residential art visits and professionally led assignments, equip students for entry into the world of the ‘creative industries’.

“This year’s students have a bright future ahead of them, we have enjoyed working alongside such a talented and committed group. We would like to wish them all the very best for the future.” Chris Loughran

FoundationDiploma FADCourse Leader Duncan CameronCourse Overview: The course is delivered in three distinct stages. The Exploratory Stage encourages exploration of the potential and limitations of a variety of media and materials. There is a strong emphasis in developing skills in observing and recording, in particular you will learn to recog-nise the importance and functions of drawing. Regular life-drawing sessions are important at this stage. The Pathway Stage encourages you to bring togetherskills in working with media and techniques, your ability to select research methods and processes and to apply your un-derstanding of the creative process to set assignments. You will be encouraged to develop your critical understanding of contemporary, historical and related contexts. The Confirmatory Stage consists of a final major project and end of year show. Here you will move towards specialisation in one of the main areas of study, including fine art, ceram-ics, graphic design, textiles, printmaking, sculpture and lens based media.

“We have had a fantastic year despite Covid-19 and lockdown carrying on via zoom. You have impressed Sue and I with your creativity and commitment to succeed. There are just too many highlights to list! Best of luck in your future creative careers and keep in touch” Duncan Cameron and Sue Green
