Dance: Romeo and Juliet presented by Standard Bank and The Dance Factory
In Romeo & Juliet, Masilo explores a fresh vocabulary, which draws on both ballet and contemporary dance techniques. For music, Masilo has chosen Prokofiev, Philip Glass, Antonio Vivaldi, JS Bach and Arvo Part. Essentially, the setting is Renaissance, with men in doublets and women in ball gowns. Nevertheless, Masilo, at 23, is conscious of, and influenced by, popular culture and by the real time and place in which she lives. Her Romeo & Juliet tells this famous story, referring to both classic and modern ideas of love, prejudice, ill-timing, death and reconciliation.
In creating this work, Masilo was assisted by two leading choreographers, PJ Sabbagha and Gregory Maqoma, who also choreographed the Ball Scene. Masilo performs one of the title roles, accompanied by a host of young professional talent including Gustin Makgeledisa, Lulu Mlangeni, Bailey Snyman, Tebogo Khumalo, Lesego Ngwato, Carlynn
Williams and Nombulelo Mashiqa.

Music: Jazz with Indian Ocean presented by Indian Consulate General
Indian Ocean is the sound of contemporary India encapsulating an eclectic mix of musical genres and influences from around the world.
The music is innovatively composed allowing the spontaneity of improvisation to change direction and move mind, body and soul into new territories. It is an experience that captures the essence of an India that is spiritual and worldly, rhythmical and magical. Their lyrics celebrate individual journeys to transform the self as well as collective struggles to change the world. These songs of liberation and redemption fuse memorable melodies with compelling rhythms. Their uniqueness of music and stage presence is sure to give South Africans a taste of something different yet an experience that one will not only be able to relate to but, also take away from.

Music: Oliver MtukudziOliver Mtukudzi was born in 1952, in Highfield, near Harare where he was
educated and began singing in choirs. Now one of Zimbabwe’s top selling musical
acts he is a sought-after performer on stages around the world. Most of his lyrics
focus on the social and economic issues that govern people’s lives and, with an
infectious sense of humour and optimism, his appeal extends to young and old
alike. He works in a mixture of Shona, Ndebele and English and has developed a
style so distinctive it is called ‘Tuku Music’. Arts Alive is privileged to present one of

Dance: The Language presented by the National Department of Arts and Culture, South Africa and
Provincial Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation
THE LANGUAGE (they understand) highlights the plight of men who live with
denial of their ordinary human qualities. A culture has been inculcated into them
that real men don’t cry, have nothing to fear, know no problems and that the
onus to maintain the bright side of things rest with them. Those are men whose
muffled call for help gets heard only when they ultimately break down.

Dance: Extract of X’s 2 presented by the National Department of Arts and Culture, South Africa and
Provincial Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation
Extract of X’s 2 aims to expose mental and emotional confrontation as inflicted on
us by our opponents, the challenges and changes that they bring to us. Trapped
by our habits, fears and history, we anticipate our present (and presence) in order
to avoid reality. The work highlights the relationship between men and women
in modern society and the relationship between them, exploring the internal
struggle and loss of identity facing men in changing society especially when
moving from the rural areas into towns.

Provincial Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation
Karohano in simple terms means “separation” in Sesotho. It is a dance piece which
is a collaboration effort between two countries, South Africa and Madagascar.
Karohano is an exploration between 3 different cultures and traditions, stories
and distance they share. This exploration is done through the fusion of free style
movement and sound and uses the body as a medium.

Dance: modify presented by Pro Helvetia Cape Town, The Swiss Arts Council
A central theme in ZOO/Thomas Hauert’s work, the tension between freedom and
constraint, internal and external forces, informed the shape as well as the content
of this project, its development process as well as its choreographic material.
The music of Haendel and Schnittke, physically and symbolically very imposing
for a platform of six dancers, combines with the visually complex set, lighting and
costumes to create a baroque abundance of sensations, aimed at drowning the
spectator in information, disorientating him, overwhelming his mental capacity
and inviting him to approach the work in a more intuitive way. To do, modify or
surrender.

Music: Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition presented by the National Department of Arts and Culture, South Africa, Provincial
Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation and CoJ
Now entering its fifth year, Moshito – as it is known – is focused even more keenly on its objective of broadening the business intelligence of music industry professionals in South Africa and the continent, strengthening business networks for participants and informing delegates, traders and the public about the multifaceted and dynamic nature of the global music industry. Each year the Moshito’s Conference element focuses on various themes and in 2008 these are technology, piracy, social development, new markets and live music. These will be spotlighted, debated and unbundled in plenary, breakaway and hot seat sessions. The exhibition element of the Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition is growing year-on-year, showcasing a wide spectrum of private and public
organisations from the South African music industry.

Dance: Cows in Space (re-run) presented by Pro Helvetia Cape Town, The Swiss Arts Council
“Imagine a herd of cows, seen through the window of a moving train. Even if they
are standing still, their position in space creates a fascinating game of structure,
intervals and speed, combined with the perspective and the speed of the train
where the passenger is seated”. The image of the cows through the window
evolves following a set of very precise rules. This observation was the occasion
to use the principle of this phenomenon as a composition tool and to create an
optical illusion, where the audience does not pass in front of a static formation
but instead the dancers recreate an apparent movement on the stage.

Theatre: Coupé presented by The Market Theatre
Created in collaboration with fellow artists as Sylvaine Strike’s Standard Bank Young Artist Award piece, Coupé opened at the National Arts Festival in 2006 to great critical acclaim. Set on a typically South African train sleeper compartment also known as a coupé, the one and a half hour theatrical journey that transpires is exhilarating, hilarious and surreal. Three travellers who do not know each other in the least, board the train and are to their horror, booked into sharing the same 2nd class 3 sleeper coupé.
Coupé is a profoundly directed piece of original South African theatre, Pam-Grant’s eye is that of an artist, the nature of each brushstroke boldly theatrical yet filmic simultaneously, weaving the fabric of dreams and reality, trains and personal journeys into a tight yarn that is “broek-wettingly” funny and profoundly moving.

Dance: UNCHARTED SEAS presented by Shared Histories & High Commission of India
“The search for the intangible, may we call it God, truth, beauty, love or freedom,
is the essence of UNCHARTED SEAS. Though each piece stands alone, it is actually
the entire production viewed in its’ entirety that tries to capture the essence of
‘SEARCH’. Standing alone, looking out at the distant stars, have we not wondered
what is it all about? What lies beyond the realms of the known? What lies beyond
what our mind can perceive? What lies hidden in the deep recesses of our heart?
Is this search external? Is the search internal? Is this search still, without any
movement?” – Aditi Mangaldas

Dance: Xiif-hunger presented by The Royal Embassy of the Netherlands in association with the City of
Johannesburg
“The inspiration for Xiif comes from my experience in Senegal at the Goree Island
where the slave trade took part centuries ago. I draw parallels to that from my
experience of growing up in South Africa within a time of division. When I share
these with the audience, given my history and given the history of slave trade,
they result in a longing for a place that I call home. The dance evokes people
who find themselves in a foreign and a strange world, away from their home and
longing and starving for their loved ones to whom they will never return. They
hope that by rebelling they may someday go back home and meet them. With this
work I hope I can understand the past and finally connect with the place of my
origin”. – Thabo Rapoo

phase in power friendly bulbs and globes in residential environments. A group of
young Sowetans are taking a conscious energy saving stand in the public arena.
Using energy consuming light bulbs and other recycled material these artists are
bringing energy issues into the public sphere by making life size sculptures from
recycled material that will initially be placed along the grass islands on Old Potch
Road and after Heritage Month will be donated to various parks in Soweto.

Dance: “Siii...Si!” by Pockemon Crew presented by The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and the French Embassy in
South Africa
Originating for Lyon in France, Pockemon Crew is the most awarded B-Boy company in the world and their first creation, “Siii...Si!”, is a concept more than a story. “Siii… Si!” (like “Oooooh Yeeeaaahhh!!!”) is an expression we use when a dancer does a great move”, Brahim says. More than a theme, the first Pockemon Crew creation aims at rooting a concept, that’s why “Siii… Si!” doesn’t narrate a story. Pockemon Crew advocates the essence of dance. What matters for them is “to make”, and to make is to dance, and to dance… is being alive. In “Siii…Si!”, the movement doesn’t “say”, it simply “is”. The choreography evokes a lucid battle with no victory because its reality and aim are the surpassing of oneself… Being confronted by obstacles, victims of accidents, and overtaking them: this is being free. Thus, Pockemon Crews’ artistic approach belongs to an oriental influenced way of life where the journey matters more than the destination, and it searches a choreographic semantic rooted in the
authenticity of a street art transposed on stage.

South Africa
Admiral T. is King of the French West Indies Ragga-Dancehall scene and unstoppable promoter of the Creole Culture. He was born and raised in Boissard, one of Guadeloupe Islands’ roughest ghettos. On stage, with his DJ-sound system formula and along with two traditional Caribbean dancers from the reknowned company Hori’Ka, Admiral T. does nothing but make the bodies sweat and the minds get into an “afro-trans” for a memorable modern Reggae-Dancehall celebration rooted in the African pot.
From Yeoville’s Tandoor Club to Horror Cafe to Carfax, for 12 years Admiral and Jahseed have been embodying the reggae and dance-hall scene in Jozi. More than a classical DJ-MC duet, their African Storm Sound System is considered an

Music: DJ KrushDJ Krush has established himself as one of the most respected artists and
producers in the hip-hop industry, both in Japan and abroad. One of the reasons
for this is that he approaches the music with a very humble perspective, and by not
allowing over three decades of success to hinder his abilities, he constantly seeks
out new styles and sources of inspiration, which expand his craft further. He has
been regarded as ambient, trip hop, some combination of the two, and hip-hop.
DJ Krush prefers to exercise an ideological distance from the genres he is usually
grouped into, while maintaining a healthy appreciation for all music forms and
styles.
