The term “engineering” comes from the Latin word “ingenium” thatmeans talent, gift. Thus, according to this definition, the engineer wasan intelligent, practical man, able to solve problems. Who better thanLeonardo could fit this description perfectly? Leonardo studied in depthancient texts and the treatises written by the most innovative Florentineand Sienese engineers of that time. In the letter of employment writtento Ludovico il Moro in 1482, Leonardo presented himself as an architectand as a skilled military and hydraulic engineer, adding only at the endhis ability in sculpture and painting. The artist studied engineering inmore than a thousand folios, now kept in the Codex Atlanticus and in thefirst of the Madrid manuscripts.

Giorgio Vasari, Leonardo’s first biographer, saidthat the artist used to sketch “many designs forarchitecture”. In fact, in the “letter ofemployment” written to Ludovico il Moro,Leonardo presented himself as a militaryengineer, declaring that he “can give perfectsatisfaction and to the equal of any other inarchitecture and the composition of buildingspublic and private”. Leonardo studied severalancient texts but also the treatises of his owntime: in particular the treatise of military andcivil architecture by Francesco di GiorgioMartini. This allows us to understand hiscompetence in architecture and his plan of the“ideal city”, being organized on two differentlevels, one for pedestrians and the other forvehicle transportation.

As is well known, Leonardo defines painting asthe “daughter of nature”. His observation ofnature, his fascination with every living thingthat surrounded him was the main source ofhis drawings. His entire life was dedicated toinvestigating and trying to understand thelaws of nature. Nature is observed, studied anddepicted in all its forms. In fact, Leonardoconstantly aims at reproducing every elementof nature: animals, flowers, fruits, birds andalso, a female smile, the throbbing of thehearth or - following a series of examples - theintricate plait of Renaissance hairdos. Leonardo’s anatomical studies actually set themselves as an idealmeeting point between artistic and scientific interests because thestudy of the functioning of the body was essential for artistic practice inorder to achieve the correct representation of the human figure. ForLeonardo, the artistic practice was determined by an inexhaustibledesire for knowledge that led him to study the human body through theVitruvian proportions and through dissection. Drawing becomesessential to understand and reproduce the structure of the male andfemale body, a “wonderful machine” perfectly thought out. The organsare devices and the body is a machine: Man then becomes a furthertesting ground for mechanical science.

The three artists to whom the exhibition is devoted— Ferdinand Hodler,Aleksandr Deyneka and Neo Rauch—stand in the twentieth century forthe utopia of the ‘New Man’. They exemplify with their artistic oeuvre thethree stages through which the concept has passed. The early years ofthe twentieth century were marked by the life-reform movement, whichfed on the ideas of Romanticism. The Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler wasone of the leading artistic exponents of this movement. One of Hodler’smost important successors was the Russian painter Aleksandr Deyneka. In his motifs, he took his bearings from the eurhythmic movements ofthe Swiss artist’s figures, but placed them in prospering industriallandscapes. Finally, the painter Neo Rauch, who grew up and receivedhis artistic training in communist East Germany, takes up the type of the‘New Man’. However, his figures exaggerate the aspect of inhibitedaction and this aspect emerges in aimless and absurd configurations.

In her long career as an artist, Georgia O’Keeffe put to the test a range ofartistic possibilities and motifs through often-enigmatic pictures.Although her symphonic color compositions belonged to a classicallydeveloped repertoire of the art of the 20th century, she documented thedisengagement of American art from the traditions of Europe as well asthe emancipation of an artist. In the photographs of her gallery ownerand later husband Alfred Stieglitz, she even found herself as an artobject through his famous photos of her, which were consideredshockingly erotic at the time. The facets of her life and work werecomplimented through the photography of such artists as Ansel Adams,Todd Webb and Arnold Newman. The catalog for the exhibit of the Hypo-Kunsthalle Munich presents an overview of her entire life with arepresentative selection of her paintings and works on paper in varioustechniques and sculptures.

A pioneer of art microphotography, Carl Struewe was one of the leadingprotagonists of German photographic art in the twentieth century. Withhis works ‘Forms of the Microcosmos’, dating from between 1926 and1959, he was entering decidedly new photographic territory, arousingthe attention of the photo-avant-garde worldwide. After a training as alithographer and graphic artist, he devoted himself, entirely self-taught,to the then ‘new medium’ of photography. With his early landscape andtravel pictures following the trail of the Hohenstaufen dynasty in Italy,he set standards in photographic historiography even before AlbertRenger-Patzsch. Even though Carl Struewe’s work has recently attractedattention once more both at national and international level, there hasbeen no comprehensive assessment of his total oeuvre, a gap that hasnow been filled. With more than 200 illustrations from all the phases ofhis creative life, we now have the first illustrated book on Carl Struewe’scomplete works.

New York is the capital of photography. Already before 1900, the rapidlydeveloping skyline and the dynamism of the metropolis encouraged thepioneers of the new medium. They photographed skyscrapers, the ports, train stations and developed photography for art. Alfred Stieglitz, theavant-garde photographer and art promoter, presented them for thefirst time with more modern painters. In this environment developed thepictoralism of an impressionistic concept of imagery into the twodirections of American photography: street photography andphotographic abstraction. The catalog for this exhibition presents 170works from 40 photographers and five essays on new research intoAmerican photography in the first half of the 20th century.

The fact that Sydney artist Julian Meagheroriginally studied medicine might be deduced from the proliferation ofbody images in his paintings. From classical life drawing and persuasiveportraiture studied in Italy and Sydney, Meagher has moved to thedepiction of intricate tattoos on the backs, torsos, shoulders, arms andlegs of male subjects. This might be seen as a new episode of Pop artwith the globalization of cultural practices originating in theEastùparticularly Japan, where Meagher has frequently travelled. HisPop imagery also extends to festival scenes and the elevation ofsupermarket and liquor-shop packages and products to symbols of ourtimes. This is thought-provoking art with a very original and timelyedge.

This book tells the story of the painting, itspainter and its provenance – the journey from Bellini’s 16th-centuryVenice to Dudley’s 19th-century London – and the context in which itwas created, and later collected. The painting was probably acquired inBologna by John William Ward, who in 1827 became the 1st Earl ofDudley. His contemporaries described him as a cultured and educatedman, but also, tending to madness. The Dudley collection was one of themost outstanding in 19th-century England. The years 1505–10 werecrucial ones in Giovanni Bellini’s career, and this book examines anewthe part he played in Venetian High Renaissance painting. When Lely arrived in England in the early 1640s, his ambitionwas to be a painter of narrative scenes and not to work as a portraitist. However, the ‘subject pictures’ did not find favor with many Englishpatrons and he produced less than thirty. As Lely’s friend RichardLovelace explained, all they wanted was “their own dull counterfeits” orportraits of their mistresses. Thus, Lely was obliged to turn to portraitureto make a living. Yet, his poetic pictures of figures in idyllic landscapesare among the most beautiful paintings made in 17th-century Englandand this catalog will be the first in-depth look at this important chapterof this major painter’s career.

$390.00 • 386 pages • 272 illustrations • 2013 • Hardback • 9781904597469

Bernini at St. Peter’s may be a unique case in history: a single artist in change of a grandiose monument in acontinuous state of creativity under constantly changing patrons and a variety of projects, for nearly six decades. Thisbook argues that a continuous thread of thought may be discerned underlying and connecting the vicissitudes of thisspectacular display. From first to last, Bernini conceived of St. Peter’s as a pilgrimage church, a kind of pilgrimage ofhuman life, and his own and of the believers who visited the basilica to worship and give testimony. The book is inlarge format and richly illustrated with 272 color illustrations. It represents a fitting tribute to the artist and hismonument, St. Peter's Basilica.

New Aesthetic of the Protestant ReformationVictoria George

$300.00 • 506 pages • 117 illustrations • 2013 • Hardback • 9781904597643

This book is a reconsideration of the practice of whitewashing church interiors during the Protestant Reformation inthe sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It is the first detailed study of its kind, which challenges the view thatwhitewash was always only a ‘cheap coat of paint’. Victoria George pulls together several histories: of the color whitefrom the biblical period to the present, and ideas about the color white in philosophy, theology, art, and architecturefrom antiquity to the present. She links them to case studies of the ways in which reformers Huldrych Zwingli andJohn Calvin thought about color in a careful analysis of the role of color-thinking in their theological writings. Thesocial meanings embodied in the word, ‘whitewash’ as it entered the printed media in the 17th century is explored aspart of a chapter on the history of whitewashing itself. The long-term symbolic and aesthetic implications of the practice of whitewashing are examined in the largercontext of material culture; in terms of their value as a metaphor, for both the Reformed Protestant and the Catholicin opposition to them; and for the uses to which whitewash has been put over time.

John Madin was the master of post-wararchitecture in Birmingham. The work of Madinand his associates had a profound influence onthe reshaping of the city after the war. Trainedin the modernist style, his work ischaracterized by attention to detail, apreference for natural materials and a desirefor decoration and art in his buildings. Manyhave characterized Madin as a commercialarchitect, but as the author argues, there wasanother side to his work. His public servicecommissions, and his design and layout ofhousing schemes that are still lived-in andpopular today, testify to his commitment tohuman values.
