Figure 1. Board Update Portal

f. The Board Update Portal web server allows you toblink on-board LEDs and write to the LCD. It alsohas useful links to web pages with moreinformation, such as the kit installer, FPGA andembedded design software, and documentation.Refer to the Installation and Licensing section tosee what you need to download and install.

g. If you cannot access the Board Update Portal, youcan still access the developer resources pagesdirectly through the following links:

• Hardware Developer Resources:www.altera.com/support/soc-hw-resource.html

• Software Developer Resources:www.altera.com/support/soc-sw-resource.html

h.To connect a serial console to the board, refer to the “Installing USB Serial Drivers” section of the Altera SoC Embedded Design Suite User Guide.

Verify Basic Operationa. Attach the included Ethernet cable from the board’s

HPS Ethernet jack (J13) to your network. If you donot have an available network port, or your networkdoes not have a DHCP server, proceed to STEP g.

b. Connect the included power adapter from an A/Coutlet to J34 on the board.

c. Ensure the included SD card is mounted into socketJ5, then turn the board on using Power SwitchSW5.

d. The HPS is busy booting the Golden SystemReference Design Linux image. After the image isbooted the system’s LCD screen will display “HelloTim” and an IP address. If the system was unable toget an IP address, it will display “No IP Address”.Proceed to STEP g.

e. To see the Board Update Portal web server, open abrowser, and type the IP address from the boardinto the URL field.

Installation and LicensingNot all the software mentioned in the preceding section needs to be installed. The exact tools to install will depend on what you are planning to use the Arria V SoC Development Kit for. For example, a hardware IP developer will install very different tools than an application software developer working with the development kit. The following table details what should be installed based on what you plan to do.

TutorialsNow that you are done with installation, the next step is to experience the SoC design flow by going through some hands-on tutorials. Again, which tutorial to try depends on the task you plan to accomplish and what your role (hardware/software/firmware) is. Please refer to the table below.

Quartus II Development Kit Edition (DKE)

SoC EDS Kit Project Files

Develop and debug an FPGA design

Functionally test FPGA IP under software control

Develop and debug embedded software (driver / application)

Develop PCB

You need to install...If you plan to...

1. For instructions on how to download and install the Quartus II Web Edition software, and the developmentkit project files, refer to the “Software Installation” chapter of the Arria V SoC Development Kit User Guide.

2. Quartus II Web Edition software and the development kit project files are not license-controlled. The SoCEDS requires a proper ARM DS-5 license (FlexLM) to use. Each Arria V SoC Development Kit comesbundled with an ARM DS-5 license. Refer to the Dear Customer Letter that comes in the development kitbox for download and licensing instructions.
