The Core Knowledge Curriculum is based on theory and research in child
development and early educaon, as well as the experse of many dedicated
professionals in the Illinois Level 1 ECE Credenal Curriculum and from the Missou
Department of Health and Senior Services Child Care Orientaon Training (CCOT)and Providers Advancing through Connuing Educaon (PACE) workshops.
The design team that oversaw development of the Core Knowledge Curriculum
was guided by the belief that children learn and grow to their potenal when they
aend programs staed by well-educated professionals. They are grateful to the
Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and the Illinois Early Care &
Educaon Professional Development Network for allowing the use of their me-
honored workshop series. Their contribuons were vital the creaon of this new format.
This curriculum has been designed to give child care and early learning professionals foundaonal knowledge to be successful
when caring for children. The informaon presented in the curriculum is for all professionals working in family or center-based
child care and early learning programs. This basic informaon about concepts and skills is ideal for an entry-level sta member,
but may also be benecial for more seasoned professionals as a refresher course. This curriculum meets the Kansas and
Missouri Core Competencies for Early Care and Educaon Professionals (Levels 1 and 2) and the Illinois Gateways to Opportunity
Content Areas. Parcipants can complete these sessions in any order through Child Start Inc., your local Resource and Referral

About Core Knowledge Curriculum

Grant opportunies are available for Child Care Centers, and Family Child Care Providers. The grant opportunies will allow child
care programs to enhance their services in the following areas:
Children with Special Needs - maximum award $5,000
Child Care Center - maximum award $10,000Aer-School Programming - maximum award $5,000
GRANT DEFINITION
Grant funding will soon be available to center and family-based child care providers in Kansas to support the increased quality o
care for children across Kansas. These grants are funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Grants will be
available to Child Care Centers, Aer-School Programs and programs that care for or plan to care for children with special needs
GRANT CRITERION Programs must be licensed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment
Have been in business at least six months
Must have at least one child receiving subsidy (SRS, United Way, Smart Start, etc.)
Must aend a minimum of 18 hours of professional development associated with the grant being requested
Separate grant applicaons must be completed to request mulple grant awards
Self assessment of program must be completed with grant applicaons (tool will be provided) Grant applicaons must be
POSTMARKED no later than January 3, 2011
Funding must be spent no later than July 31, 2011

Healthy Aer School Kids
Descripon of topics:
Healthy Aer School Kids & FamiliesFamilies are the rst teachers of young children. Child care professionals and aer school
care sta have the opportunity to support families in their eorts to choose healthy foods
and acve lifestyles for their children. The presentaon will oer child care professionals
who care for children in aer school sengs a wide variety of ways to engage families to
help their children stay acve and eat nutrious foods.
Power Up with Healthy Snacks
Childrens snacks are an important part of their overall nutrion. With childhood obesityrates on the rise, child care programs can play an important role in helping children choose
healthy snacks. Child care professionals will learn how to select healthy snacks, involve
children in preparing simple, healthy snacks, and create a posive eang environment for
school age children.
We Like to Move It!
Physical acvity is important for children and adults in aer school sengs. Parcipants
will learn about physical acvity guidelines, as well as how to plan more movement andulize inexpensive materials to promote fun, acve play. Adult atudes related to physical
acvity and the importance of modeling will also be discussed.
