ARPS NEWS 13th JUNE, 2019 CALENDAR From the Principal SOMERS CAMP Each year, a small number of our students have the chance to attend Somers Camp, on the southern peninsula in Victoria. The camp is a Department of Education School site that has some amazing activities, such as; abseiling, high ropes course, noctur- nal animal house, boating, and so much more. Students at the camp come from several different schools in our network. This year, Dom McCaffrey again joined students who attend the Somers Camp for 9 days (including the long weekend!). On Tuesday night, I was delighted to be able to join our students and others at the camp to join in the evening activities and Campfire. Our ARPS campers were having a wonderful time and all had found new friends and undertaken challenging activities. I was very proud to see our students showing such wonderful resilience and confidence in the Somers Camp environment. DISCO- 21st

June Information about our ‘NEON DISCO’ on Friday 21st June was sent home this week. We are excited about the theme and the planning for this year’s Disco.

Times are as follows:

Foundation – Year 2: 5.00pm-6.00pm

Year 3- Year 6: 6.15pm- 7.30pm

We are looking for some volunteers to help on the night, with food and drink sales. Please contact the office if you are able to help. Reminder: Parent Teacher Interviews: Wednesday 26

th June

Parent teacher interviews can be booked on Compass now. I strongly encourage all parents to take the opportunity to book an interview and meet with your child’s teach-er, or take part in the 3 way conference sharing opportunity for year 3 to 6 students. There are still plenty of spaces available to book times online. Website Upgrade- up and running!

Our new Albany Rise website is now up and running. Whilst we still have some work to update all of the pag-es, most of the hard work is completed and can now be accessed easily on your phone. :

Spotlight on Teaching and Learning:

On Wednesday this week, teachers met in level teams to review students’ data and plan for the next stages in their learning of Reading. Many year levels are focussing on developing skills in inferring as part of students comprehension skills. Some level teams also reviewed the recently completed learning cycle for Reading, and noted the data showing strong learn-

ing growth for specific comprehension skills, such as summarising a text. Parents may have heard children talking about these skills at home, as this has been a focus of some explicit teaching and learning of reading recently.

School Wide Positive Behaviour (SWPB) Values Survey:

Around 10% of our families have taken part in the SWPB survey for parents which is now available. The sur-vey is providing useful data and feedback about the understanding and embedding of our school values. The survey will also help the SWPB team progress towards consistent whole school practices to embed positive behaviours. We encourage all parents/carers to complete this survey: https://forms.gle/4iY9j1RHquM48J7J8 State School Spectacular We are so proud of the group of students who are involved in rehearsals and planning for our inclusion in the State School Spectacular this year. This group of students have agreed to commit to weeks of rehearsals leading up to the event, as well as attending offsite practices with the many other schools involved in the event. It is a huge opportunity and commitment for these students and I know they will make the best of this oppor-tunity to perform to parents and schools from across the state later in the year.

Tickets went on sale this week, for those interested in attending: https://premier.ticketek.com.au/shows/show.aspx?sh=STATESCH19&utm_source=ticketek.com.au&utm_medium=friendlylink&utm_campaign=STATESCH19

PARKING IN THE STAFF CARPARKS Our school aims to ensure every child is kept safe when at school, and when entering and leaving the school grounds. We rely on all community members to assist us, by following clear and explicit rules in relation to the use of the staff car parks at the front and rear of the school. Having students and cars all moving through the onsite parking spaces (often in a hurry) during peak pick up and drop of times, is a safety risk for all involved. We ask that parents and visitors adhere to the following: Only park in the disabled parking space on the grounds if you are clearly displaying a disabled car

tag. If the disabled space is full, do not double park or remain in the staff park. Do not enter the staff car park after 8.45am in the morning, or before 3.45pm in the afternoon, and

only for collecting/ dropping students to OSH club. Rain, lateness, late to work, etc are not reasons to use the carpark and risk students’ safety. Our review of CCTV vision of the car parks shows many parents who are simply ignoring the safety of their own children and other students, by entering the carparks at peak times. If needed, I will contact these parents to discuss their specific needs. Parents who have any questions about the use of staff car parking spaces, can contact the office for more information. Early Collection of Students A reminder that the school day ends at 3.30pm. Early collection of students just before the end of the day (eg. 3.25pm) can be disruptive to the office operations and to classrooms interrupted by announcements at this time. Parents are asked to keep these disruptions to a minimum. Year 6-7 Transition Timeline: Key Dates
