The stinger of a bee is 1/16th of an inch long. The rest of what you feel is enthusiasm. Through enthusiasm, we can climb the highest mountain and traverse the lowest valley. We must all continue to have great amounts of enthusiasm and use it to help propel us through.

As I reflect back on 2009, I see several examples of enthusiasm in our organization. Even through long days, the staff at the Spring TR Camporee kept smiling. At our state tournaments, the staff used enthusiasm to make the kids all feel like winners. In committee meetings, members were excited about the upcoming innovative programs and educational workshops. I can see a renewal of enthusiasm starting with our board of directors and filtering throughout the entire membership, even reaching over to the Alabama Recreation and Parks Foundation.

2010 will bring new educational opportunities for our members. We will host a Creative Camp 2010 in April with sessions on programming and more. There will be several low-cost workshops held at the state office. Our goal is to provide workshops that our members can afford to pay for out of their own pocket if necessary.

2010 will offer even more financial challenges, bringing with them membership retention and participation challenges. I also know our incoming president, Tommie Agee, has the internal motivation and enthusiasm to help us meet these head on and conquer them. I urge you to give him your support as he leads ARPA.

I would like to thank you all for your support during 2009. It was my pleasure and honor to serve ARPA as president and I look forward to continue to serve our organization. May God bless each of you.

Sincerely,

Robin BrothersARPA President

From the State Office

Hard to believe the holidays have already come and gone; it seems each year everything passes by a little quicker than the previous. But the New Year brings lots of exciting things in store for ARPA. To start with, the Annual State Conference is only days away, and this year it will be held in Orange Beach at the Perdido Beach Resort. The theme for this year is “Sail into New Directions,” and isn’t that what we all want to do at the start of a new year? This year’s conference will feature great education and an inspiring Opening General Session speaker. The speaker this year is Chette Williams. For those of you that have never heard of him, he is the Chaplain for the Auburn University football team and the campus director of the Auburn University Chapter of Fellowship for Christian Athletes. He speaks from the heart and has an amazing message! The education at conference this year will provide you with information and ideas to take back to your agency and city and hopefully take your parks and recreation department into “New Directions.” If you have not already registered to attend this conference, a registration form is available in this issue, along with the education grid.

So many things have been planned for 2010 that it is hard to fit everything into this one letter, but be on the look-out for several education sessions to be held at the State Office as well as around the state. The Education Committee has worked hard to try and provide a wide variety of topics to cover at an affordable rate, just in case you have to pay for these sessions out of your own pocket. Just another way that ARPA is heading in “New Directions” as well.

It is easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, and now that it is over (for another year) take some time for yourself and enjoy any of the great events that the different parks and recreation departments offer around the state. We encourage all members to submit information for the Leisure Lines and Upcoming Events section of the magazine, so take a look at what will be happening between now and April. You just might see something that you find interesting, or you might see an event that would be great to host in your city, too!

ARPA is hoping to have a new website design to unveil this year. My vision, along with the Board of Directors, is to have a more user-friendly site that still offers lots of great information. I am hoping to be able to include links for all our members, a photo gallery section from previous ARPA events, and contact information for state and federal officials and agencies. More information will be available soon. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

I would like to close with a sincere thank you to the 2009 Board of Directors and Committee Chairs and the entire membership of ARPA. Thank you for your leadership and guidance during an economically challenging year in 2009. Your hard work and determination will continue to ensure that ARPA is sailing into new directions!

Sincerely,

Lindsay D. WrightARPA Executive Director

Tommie Agee knows what it means to be on a team. From professional football to Team Opelika, most of Tommie’s success in life has been about teamwork. Tommie played sports for nearly 20 years and says, “Being a part of a team helped me to develop accountability and dependability.” Tommie played professional football for 9 years and had the opportunity to be part of a winning Superbowl team twice. “My playing surface and my teammates have changed over the years, but the overall team philosophy has not. The love that I have for the game has been transferred to the area of Parks & Recreation. I really love what I do.”

In his current job at Opelika Parks & Recreation, Tommie has an opportunity to step out of his administrative role frequently and coordinate the Department of Youth Football Leagues, the Hershey Track Program, the T-Ball Program and to assist with the Seniors Programs.

Welcome Your New President

Tommie Agee Asst. Director, Opelika Parks & Recreations

Page 7: ARPA The Alabamian

Tommie says his membership in ARPA “has allowed me to be a part of a bigger team.” He has found the network opportunities very valuable in helping him to become an exceptional professional. The continuing education opportunities and the opportunity to serve on the board of directors have allowed him to do an even better job in his department and to better serve the community.

As President of ARPA, one of Tommie’s goals is to help foster a sense of ‘ownership’ into the association. He hopes to enlist

the efforts of the entire association to plan programs that will meet the needs of the membership and generate more revenue. He plans to work with the team to find creative ways to increase revenue through membership retention.

Tommie and his wife, Anchylus have three children: Tyler (17), Torey (15) and Angelic (12). All three are honor students and are involved in extra-curricular activities. Anchylus has been awarded the Opelika City Schools Teacher of the Year Award and has been nominated for Alabama Teacher of the Year.

Tommie is the co-founder of Project GEAR – Groups of Examples Admitting Reality - a non-profit group set up to steer young people away from destructive lifestyles. His involvement on several boards and committees as well as several non-profit groups and city schools have molded him into an outstanding member of the community.

Tommie Agee “has our back” in ARPA, and surely the members of ARPA will have Tommie’s back as well as he tackles 2010 as the President of the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association.

WinfieldDespite rainy weather, Winfield Park and Recreation hosted the 10th annual Living History Day, Skirmish at Luxapalilla Civil War Reenactment, and Civil War Ball as part of the 35th annual Mule Day Festival. HuntsvilleCommunity Events Division partnered with Sci-Quest Hands on Science Center to hold the annual Hands on Trucks event on Saturday, October 17. 600 kids and parents got the opportunity to see 24 trucks up close. The highlights for some kids were the popsicles being given away out of the Bluebell Ice Cream truck. Others enjoyed climbing into the turret of an armored Humvee furnished by the U. S. Marine Corps Kilo Battery located in Huntsville.

GuntersvilleThe Guntersville Recreation Center has been busy with our fall happenings starting in September with “Melodies and Musings” a study of “Our Appalachian Legacy” in which our older adults learned to share and perform music or write stories about their life. Together musicians and writers shared their melodies and musings with other rural older adults, many of whom do not have access to cultural programs but had a chance to share their own heritage. A week of workshops covered Appalachian music, beginner dulcimer, guitar, art and writing. The week ended with an arts and craft fair featuring handmade instruments, jewelry, soaps, quilting, honey and beeswax candles and lots of great food for sale.

October began with a senior play day in which the senior adults from Marshall Counties seven Senior Centers converged at the Recreation Center for a morning of games that challenged the participant’s flexibility, endurance, strength and agility. The seniors had to do a minimum of six agility tests and two fun activities in order to receive a medal. The morning finished with a luncheon and awards were given to those seniors who completed the challenge.

The Recreation Center was the place to be on Halloween night where the candy was plentiful and the games and prizes kept the ghosts and goblins happy. Jim Camp passed out Hot Wheels cars to all

those that dared to come close. It was a cold chilly night and about 500 ghostly creatures came and participated in our mini outdoor carnival, our way of promoting safe trick or treating.

Ballroom Dance nights for the rest of the year are November 14 and December 12. There will be a New Years Eve dance on Thursday Dec. 31. This dance is sponsored by the Ballroom Dance Class. It will be a fund raiser for Cystic Fibrosis. The dances begin at 7:30 until 10:30 except the New Years Dance which will go to after midnight. Refreshments are included in the $10 per person fee to get in, and there will be several spotlight dances from competition dancers from the North Alabama area.

Guntersville will once again play host to the Dixie World Series Baseball Tournament in July 2010. This tournament will be played at the Bill Moore Majors Baseball Field. For more information contact Ken Ard at 256-571-7590.

HooverOne of the Hoover Recreation Center’s most popular programs is the Hoover Recreation Teen Board, a group of up to 12-18 talented and highly motivated high school students devoted to planning special events during the year for teens living in the Hoover community. Serving on the Teen Board teaches these teens to utilize planning and public relation skills and enables them to develop a vision for a project and through their own efforts, see that vision become a reality. Along with planning their own events, the Board also assists with the city’s large special events. Some examples of the Teen Board’s events in the past have been a mystery dinner theater, Concert in the Park, and Spin it to Win it ultimate Frisbee tournament. Our latest event was an Iron Bowl Bash which included various football related games and trivia. Prizes were presented to the best dressed Auburn and

We are currently in the process of rebuilding a sinking field to level it back out. Hopefully the field will be leveled out, irrigation and sod will be down, and the fence will be back up in the next few weeks if Mother Nature decides to cooperate with the plans. When that project is complete then it is on to other projects.

Cooking with Seniors “My life in a frying pan”Submitted by:Debbie Reed, Center ManagerRose Hill Senior Adult Center, Dothan Leisure Services

As the demographics change for the incoming senior population, so must the programming. When we brainstorm for workable ideas, it’s important that we stay close to basics and not overlook the generation coming onboard.

Many of the seniors who are in your senior centers are newly widowed, single again, or simply are not eating nutritious meals. It might be out of depression, boredom, or inconvenience that they do not prepare their own meals at home. They might not remember how much fun it is to cook, or how simple and healthy it can be.

Chef Michael Sigler and I met to discuss the possibility of bringing a cooking program to Rose Hill Senior Center. I wanted it simple, informative, healthy, economical, but most of all FUN! “Fun” meaning “hands on” and no long boring lectures.

Little did I know that Chef Michael would embrace the idea so wholeheartedly and with such passion! Michael is the author of “My life in a frying pan” which chronicles his years in becoming a culinary chef. He is the co-founder and president of the association of Culinary Professionals. He also co-hosts a weekly radio program called “Tastebuddies”.

We are now looking forward to our third session of classes. We have learned how to make delicious sauces fit for a king, how to cook mouth-watering pastas, stir fries and chicken, and most of all, the rediscovered joy of cooking.

If you are looking for that special program to bring in new seniors to your center, or to simply inspire the ones that you have, offer a cooking class. Remember to keep it hands on and fun! They might even rediscover the joy of cooking with their own “Life in a frying pan!”

Around the WorldTo help endorse Mobile’s International Festival, a smaller scale “Around the World” program was featured in the Month of October by the Therapeutics Department and hosted by Jennifer Coppage, Therapeutic Specialist. Seven countries were featured in the program. Each Country displayed native items, told about their history, offered food samples, and provided a craft to represent the country. Several day programs in the area attended the event, voicing their praise for both the educational and fun program offered by the City of Mobile.

Exploring the OutdoorsAs part of the Leisure Education program, “Exploring the Outdoors,” participants learned about the city’s Environmental Center and what they have to offer. Participants discovered ways to be environmentally friendly, learned about the area animals, and explored the hiking trails at the center. A couple of times a month different outdoor resources are featured. This program enforces local resources, the environment, and safety outdoors in an attempt to help promote everything the city has to offer.

Art ContestOctober’s Special Needs Art Contest was on display at the Around the World program. Over 50 pieces of art work were on display from weaving, collages, print making and paintings. First, Second, and Third place winners were recognized with ribbons and art supplies.

A Make and Take PartyDecember 10th and 11th, Mobile’s Therapeutic department sponsored a Make and Take Party for those individuals with Special Needs. The participants learned how to make ornaments for their Christmas tree and gifts for their loved ones. The party-goers left with handmade gifts tucked under their arms wrapped in handmade wrapping paper and multiple decorations, eager to head home to start decorating.
