He saw an advertisement for the chief’s position in Eagle. He applied for it, but initially didn’t expect a reply. “My wife and I really like it here, didn’t think it would work out [in Eagle],” Vogel said. He said he interviewed for the position. The interview included a discussion on visions and projects they sought for the Greater Eagle Fire Protection District in Eagle. Some of the projects the fire board wants to see are improving the recruitment and retention program including adding five new firefighters, expanding the department’s wellness program and possibly construction of a second fire department. They also want the new chief to review the current staffing model in comparison to community needs and evaluate the organization itself. He said the Greater Eagle department is similar in structure to Sterling Fire Department. Vogel said when he got home, he told his wife Hope that whoever is selected will be lucky. Then he got the phone call. “It wasn’t an easy decision,” he said. He said he is leaving behind too many friends, great employees and fellow workers. He said he came to Sterling with reservations after having family nearby when living in Wichita, Kan. Chief Vogel feels he made a difference on the department and sees an opportunity to leave his mark in Eagle. “It will be a new opportunity for growth for me,” he said. Vogel was drawn to the Eagle community partly because of the outdoor opportunities. His love for bicycling was met with numerous mountain biking trails and paved routes in the region. He said the Eagle community is developing year-round oppor- tunities. “They want people to be there year round,” he said. In his seven years with Sterling Fire Department, Vogel has been part of the transition to a fire-based ambulance service serving Logan County, offering training for new AED units installed in buildings and upgrading equipment in the department. “We’ve been very aggressive (in seeking grants) in my seven years,” he said. He said the department has received grants for purchase of new fire trucks, extrication equipment, heart monitors, ambulances and radios. The Department currently has grants out for a new fire truck and new radio equipment. The Department was also awarded a grant for an exhaust system at the Department, removing diesel exhaust from the bays. He said the grant process is becoming more difficult with the amount of money available decreasing and the number of agencies who apply increasing. Vogel’s last day with Sterling Fire Department is April 10 and will begin his new duties with the Greater Eagle Fire Protection District.
