Bringing up a BookwormThe value of a book in the hands of a child cannot be over-estimated. Mrs. Marsha Townsend, fourth grade teacher at the elementary school, believes sofirmly in empowering parents to develop literacy skills withtheir children that she startedher own non-profit, “Bringing Up A Bookworm.”

Through her fiscal sponsor, Humanitarian Social Innovations(HSI), Mrs. Townsend created aprogram that provides childrenwith foundational reading skillsby encouraging parents to readaloud to them from the day theyare born. Her goal is to providegift bags to every expectantmother at an early obstetrics ap-pointment. The bag includes an introductory letter, a brochurefor local libraries and a copy ofMem Fox’s book, Reading Magic:Why Reading Aloud To Our Chil-dren Will Change Their Lives For-ever. “It is our desire that parents, having read this book, will followthrough and read regularly to

their children in infancy and tod-dlerhood, giving each child not only valuable reading skills, butalso enjoyable experiences thatbond parent and child in a warm environment of safety, security, encouragement and love that will be positively associated with readingas the child enters and progressesthrough school,” Mrs. Townsendsaid.
