However her relaƟonship with the House began in January of 2007 with a nearly 300 day stay when, at just 32 weeks into her pregnancy, her baby went into prenatal heart failure. Within 24 hours of delivery, her daughter was given a pacemaker and, living in Michigan, with her husband and two older daughters, the Ronald McDonald House quickly became home for the whole family. Her daughter, now a 7 year old, is doing quite well but conƟnues to require ongoing therapy and related treatment. Because of this, her family relocated to Indianapolis to be closer to her medical team and it wasn’t long before this mom became a RMH volunteer. Although we ask our volunteers to cover one 3 hour shiŌ every other week, Cara is oŌen seen coming in one or two Ɵmes a week, staying most of the day. Her passion ‐‐ preparing a feast for our day retreat families by scrounging whatever happens to be in the pantry at the Ɵme. Breakfast, lunch, dinner – it doesn’t maƩer, she’s got it covered. Around the House Volunteer Newsletter

Cara Kowal—Cara became a volunteer at our RMH at Riley loca on in January of 2011. However her rela onship with the House began in January of 2007 with a nearly 300 day stay when, at just 32 weeks into her pregnancy, her baby went into prenatal heart failure. Within 24 hours of delivery, her daughter was given a pacemaker and, living in Michigan, with her husband and two older daughters, the Ronald McDonald House quickly became home for the whole family.  Her daughter, now a 7 year old, is doing quite well but con nues to re‐quire ongoing therapy and related treatment.  Because of this, her family relocated to Indianapolis to be closer to her medical team and

it wasn’t long before this mom became a RMH volunteer.

Although we ask our volunteers to cover one 3 hour shi  every other week, Cara is o en seen coming in one or two  mes a week, staying most of the day.  Her passion ‐‐‐ preparing a feast for our day retreat families by scrounging whatever happens to be in the pantry at the  me.  Breakfast, lunch, dinner – it doesn’t ma er, she’s got it covered.  (con nued on page 2)

Cara Kowal, Emily Duhn and Lisa Hull  Honored with Lori Kleiman Award

Lori Kleiman was one of RMHI’s highly valued and very special volunteers da ng back to our opening in 1982.  She was valued for her dedica on to our mission, her hard work, her generosity with her  me and talent, and most of all her compassion.  Since her passing, the RMHI recognizes volunteers that most exemplify her dedica on and values with this award.

Emily Duhn and Lisa Hull—Emily and Lisa came to us as a “one – two punch” with Mom star ng her volun‐teer service in January of 1995 and daughter close on her heels in January of 1996.  Here again this family’s rela onship with the Ronald McDonald House started long before this when they were houseguests ‐‐‐ so long ago that those records are archived so I can’t even tell you how long ago and so long ago we were s ll serving adult pa ents with our transplant apartments ‐‐‐ but not so long ago that we don’t remember them as a guest family.  (con nued on page 2)

(Cara Kowal tribute con nued from page 1)

According to Daun Hughey, Cara has become well known for her ability to make something out of “not much” with one of our guest families claiming, give that woman a can of chicken noodle soup and a can of green beans and she’ll make a four course meal. She is definitely the Queen of turning some of our underused and less popular pantry staples into tasty dishes ‐‐‐ Pumpkin & Sweet Potato Soup, Pea Salad, Hummus, Salsa, a variety of Pasta Salads and even baked goods. Her philosophy ‐‐‐ hungry people do not cope well.

Just as important, Cara has made a huge impact on the families we serve at RMH Riley because she has walked in their shoes. While in the kitchen preparing food, she is talking to families giving them encouragement. When she is at the House it is amazing how the morn‐ing starts out with a few guests but by lunch  me the dining room is full and buzzing with lively conversa on.

Evidently, this commitment to compassionate service runs in the family.  In a few weeks Cara’s 13 year old daughter Rosalyn will be recognized with an Indiana Philanthropy Day Award in the category of Outstanding Youth Achievement for her own service to the Ronald McDonald House.

Cara’s compassion shines brilliantly through her com‐mitment to our mission and the families we serve. Please join us in recognizing  Cara for her exemplary service to the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana.

(Emily Duhn and Lisa Hull tribute con nued from page 1)

Working together on their Wednesday evening shi  this dynamic duo is in constant mo on ‐‐‐ checking families in, fulfilling houseguest needs, filling the pantries, straightening up a messy area, closing out the cash register ‐‐‐‐ you name it ‐‐‐ nary a second goes by that they aren’t being help‐ful.  They also have been known to come in early to help cover a shi  that is not fully staffed. Suffice it to say they are fully capable of handling whatever comes their way.

This duo has taken on other projects along the way.  They are responsible for sor ng through do‐na ons and stocking the “Free Box” that is used to share some of our donated items with our guest families.  Want to take a stuffed animal or a book to your child in the hospital? ‐‐‐ check the free box.  Want a li le something special for that sibling who has shown the pa ence of Job while hanging out at the hospital? ‐‐‐ check the free box. Thanks to these two, there is always something to fit the bill.

Last year they jumped on board with helping to organize, set up and staff Santa’s Workshop at Christmas  me. This is when the conference room “magically” turns into a fully stocked bou que full of holiday gi  selec ons, relieving the burden of shopping from our families. This duo has spent countless hours sor ng and organizing the holiday storage area making sure items are grouped by age and gender appropriateness and iden fying gaps where addi onal dona ons are needed. It’s a huge job and we are eternally grateful we have their as‐sistance.

These volunteers are also our Not So Secret Shop‐pers ‐‐‐ heading to Sam’s Club or Walmart with our RMHI shopping list a few  mes a month, trans‐por ng those supplies to the House and making sure they get stored away in the proper place. You may find one or both of them helping with the Golf Tournament or other events. This pair definitely have a heart for giving back.

Please join us recognizing this team for their exem‐plary service to the House.
