FROM THE SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAM Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members, Springfest The Springfest had a wonderful feel to it and I had lots of comments about this year being the best fete yet. There was certainly plenty of options for everyone in the family with a variety of stalls and activities. A lot of people stayed on for the ‘bump out’ as well and worked on into the night to ensure everything was packed up and all good for school yesterday. Debbie and Kim and their team did an outstanding job and were meticulous with their organisation. I extend a sincere ‘Thank You’ to them and all of you for the work and huge efforts you put into supporting the fete committee and working on the day. Thank you! BCE Connect App We are working towards having all class and school information on the parent portal as this will make it easier for parent to access information and calendar dates. The BCE Connect, a mobile app for all our BCE Schools, is another great way to participate in our community. BCE Connect gives parents, extended family, friends and the public easy access to school information, making it easier to keep track and stay in touch. This app works with Google maps for location and directions, and gives instant access to phone numbers, emails and school calendars. BCEConnect has been designed to work on both Apple and Android devices. BCE Connect, is available to download from Google play store and the Apple App Store - iPhone link and iPad link. Conference This Thursday and Friday, Mr Mason, Mr Mulhearn and Mrs Maclean will be attending the Senior Leaders Conference. We wish them all the best for an informative and productive time. In their absence, Mrs French, Mrs Anderson and Ms Louange will be deputizing for them and working with me in the office. End of Term Next week is the last week of Term 3, we return to school on Tuesday 3 October. Our Pupil Free Day in Term 4 is Monday 16 October. Disability Parking Bay and Shared Access Area Please see the attached information sheet 'Who may stop here' regarding the disability parking bay and shared access area. We have these in our car park, unfortunately at times we do have some cars parked in the shared access area which blocks access for people parked in the shared access area. Please keep this bay free for access and only use the disability parking if you have a valid Disability Parking Permit. Please remember that the car park next to the church is for staff and parishioners attending daily mass only. The disability car park is used by a couple of our families who have valid permits. Thank you for your assistance with this matter. Billy Carts and Indoor Climbing Wall. They worked together and challenged themselves to go outside of their comfort zones. We congratulate these students on their efforts and thank the staff members who gave up personal and family time to support them and make these opportunities possible for our students - Mr Kenyon, Mrs Horn, Mrs Hay, Mr Azzopardi, Mrs Maclean, Mrs Retief, Mr Schwartz, and Mr Mulhearn.

Springfest Success I’d like to add my own congratulations and thanks to Deb, Kim, all the members of our Springfest committee, our St Rita’s staff and all who contributed to the outstanding success of this year’s Springfest event. It was amazing! The atmosphere on the day was welcoming and exciting and there was such a variety of stalls, activities and opportunities on offer. Our thanks to all our sponsors and to all those who donated items and time towards the day. Regardless of whatever the final financial outcomes may be, I believe that the 2017 Springfest was a massive success as a community event and a real credit to all involved. Well done, St Rita’s! Have a great week everyone. Brian

English and Literature in Years 3-6 I would like to share some texts which are the current focus for learning and teaching in English across Year 3 ,4 ,5 and 6 and it may be helpful when having a conversation about the learning with your child.

Year 3 have been working with The Magic School Bus and Telescope to the Universe. They are creating an information texts. https://www.goodreads.com/series/69610-the-magic-school-bus-classics

Year 4 have been Reading, Viewing and Creating Persuasive Texts in the context of advertising. The students are exploring how the choice of language, use of colour, fonts and graphics can influence different audiences. They are using this knowledge to create their own persuasive texts for a specific audience of their choosing. Year 5 have been reading and listening to different types of poetry and are creating a personal poetry anthology. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has been the central text in Year 6. As we move toward the end of term the students will be creating a text either online or spoken to persuade other students on these topics amongst others: Harry should be expelled from Hogwarts. Harry should stay at Hogwarts over summer break. What house I should be in if I was in Hogwarts.

NEWS FROM THE RESOURCE CENTRE

Thanks again to our school community for your support of our Book Fair last week! The result of our Book Fair was a

commission of approximately $2,800 for us to use for books and resources from Scholastic. And now......we have a cupboard full of books waiting to be covered! If anyone is able to cover some books for us (even over the holidays) please come in and see Nathalie or Jo. Thanks again! The books that we had to reorder should be here this week. We will distribute them as soon as they arrive. Thanks for your patience.

EARLY YEARS ASSEMBLY

Please note that the Early Years Assembly scheduled for this week has been cancelled.

YEAR 4 EXCURSION

Ngutana-Lui Last Friday the children in Year Four enjoyed an informative and engaging day at Ngutan-Lui, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre. During the day, they explored many aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Culture including discovering bush foods and medicines, listening to storytelling and in particular stories of “The Dreaming.” They watched some weaving and participated in boomerang throwing and traditional dance. Finally, they learnt about sacred dot art and tried their hand at creating some interesting patterns. It was a fantastic learning experience for them all.

YOUTH MASS

There will be a Youth Mass held this Saturday for the 6:15pm mass at Mary Mackillop Parish. All youth are invited to attend the mass. There will also be a potluck family social to follow the mass hosted, so please bring a plate to share for after the mass. We are also looking for readers and gift/cross bearers. If youth would like to help with any of these, please contact Mr Lee Brand, staff member of Carmel College [email protected] with your preference to help and/or show up to the church at 5:45pm. Much appreciated and hope to see you there!
