Dear Antonio Park Families, ICT ICT ICT @ APPS.

APPS is committed to providing technologies that

reflect current best practice and next practice

innovations. APPS’s learning spaces have been

enhanced through having interactive whiteboards

(IWBs) and increased ICT capacity to enhance

teaching and learning.

The Library Fund, as part of the parent contributions,

has been very important as it has enabled APPS to

purchase the wonderful technology we have. Without

this fund it would be very difficult to provide, let alone

sustain an innovative ICT program that enhances

students’ learning. It is also wonderful, that because it

is a trust fund, it is a tax deduction for families. On a

daily basis, our students are engaged in ICT learning

and have a strong sense of themselves as

technological learners. There are many ways that

technology benefits students. ICT prepares students to

learn, train and live in a digital world. Technology can

accelerate, enrich and deepen basic skills. Teachers

are using IWBs on a daily basis. Interactive rolls are

evident in all classrooms. Teachers are utilising film

making software and equipment to complete ICT

projects enhancing the use and application of ICT in

the classroom.

Well Done Aerobics Teams!!!!!!

Last Saturday our four aerobics teams, Aurum Stars,

Little Minions, Mini Rock Stars and Super Shouters competed in the National Aerobics competition in

Queensland. All teams achieved an outstanding result: Aurum Stars (2nd Place - Primary Aerobics section),

Little Minions (1st Place - Future Legends Large section), Mini Rock Stars (2nd Place - Future Legends

Large section) and Super Shouters (2nd Place - Future Legends Large section).

We had approximately 105 school community

members at the Gold Coast over the weekend. Natalie

Arundel, Courtney Camm and Stacey Gamble were

amazing with their dedication and support of the

students during our time in Queensland. Our coaches

would be very proud of their teams and deservedly so.

It was really lovely to have an opportunity to spend time

with the students, their families and staff. Three

additional staff also went for support, they were: Jan

MacDonald, Jenny Semken and myself.

The venue where we stayed offered great activities and

facilities for the children and their families. Like many

occasions at A.P.P.S., this was a fantastic community

event and experience … laced with pride, it was warm,

fun and exciting. We are very proud of these students’

achievements.

Swimming is happening in Level 2. Everyday the level two students are splishing, sploshing and splashing. Remember each day to check the swimming gear and take care that the goggles don’t disappear. Next week the students start Procedural Writing and no doubt will have a writing piece titled ‘Let’s Get Ready to Swim’.

What’s Happening In Level 2?

It’s been another busy week in Level 1 as we continue practising our dance routines, develop strategies for subtraction in maths and complete our poetry unit in writing. We continue to explore factors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Over the next few weeks we will be having another visit from the fire brigade and a visit from the RACV to talk about road safety. Next week our spelling focus is on the letter Gg and words that end in ‘ow’ such as blow. In maths we will be looking at 3D shapes. What 3D

This week our maths focus is chance and data. Each day we will be predicting the results of everyday chance activities. “Will it rain today when we go swimming? Physical Education and Sport This week, many of the Level 2 students have started their swimming program. They have been excitedly heading to their buses to go to the pool and have enjoyed their classes over the week. Last week, the Level 3 and 4 students participated in the Athletic Sports. It was a great day, and we thank Darren Mac for his excellent organisation which made the day go so smoothly. It was great to see many parents assisting and supporting the students and teachers

and students supporting each other. Well done everyone! Wandering around the school, we see many students and teachers dancing and singing for their production item! Rehearsals are well underway and we are looking forward to it all coming together for our ‘first night’!

Transition for Pre school children begins today. It is a great opportunity for them to experience life in Primary School. We look forward to meeting all the children over the next few weeks. Thank you to Elizabeth and her team who have

organised the transition sessions.

Another sensational week of learning has almost come to an end! We are finishing our poetry unit this week and you can see the fruits of our labor all around the classrooms. We have particularly enjoyed learning about the grammatical features of poetry – like nonsense words, rhyming and spoonerisms! Our writing board will be up by the end of tomorrow, please come down and see it. (You will be amazed!) This week we have started learning about patterns and algebra. Throughout this unit we will be deciphering mixed operation equations by using BODMAS, substituting missing values with letters and solving number patterns. But don’t worry; the quadratic equation is still a few years away! Swimming, swimming, swimming! We saw the Level 2 students head off to swimming lessons this week and there are many excited students in Level Three just waiting to show off their skills! Please ensure that your child’s permission envelope and medical form are returned to school as soon as possible to ensure your child doesn’t miss out on this essential life skill (and it’s fun!). An enormous congratulations to all the Level Three students who competed in the National Aerobics last weekend! We are all super proud of you and you represented not only your school, but your Level wonderfully.

Homework went out yesterday and it has been great to see the amount of care and effort students have been putting into their activities. So far this year the teachers have seen videos, stop motion animations, posters, pop-ups, dioramas and even songs created as a part of homework. Remember, it’s about time management and should be enjoyable! As our literature book discussions continue, it is important that students bring their novels and reader’s notebooks to school every day, as groups change novels it is important that they return their old novels to our reading resource room. Please ensure that novels are returned on their specified date so that the books can be available to the other students in the Level. Production time! The songs for this year’s production are extremely catchy! All the students are working hard on learning and perfecting their dances. This really is a fun and exciting time of the year for all those involved. We are sure your children have been showing you their new groove already! Please continue to bring in camp deposits and notices – just another thing to look forward to! Have a wonderful week! The Level Three Team

Sport. Our House sports were a tremendous success with many amazing performances. Our District team is currently being organised by Mr Mac and will be finalised probably by the end of this week. We would like to thank the parents who assisted on the day, those who were enthusiastic spectators and also the teachers who diligently performed their specific roles on the day. We will be practising and training during our Friday sport session in preparation for the District Sports on Tuesday 2nd September. Level 4 excursion. We enjoyed a fantastic day at Healesville Sanctuary last Tuesday and would sincerely like to thank the parents who assisted us on the day and Mrs Fittolani who organised this interesting excursion for us. Some reflections on our visit to the sanctuary are included in this article.

Hoop Time. Mrs Fittolani and parents took some of our Level 4 students to the Hoop Time basketball competition on Wednesday. Results will follow next week. Production clothing. Please organise a black top and pants for your child as the base of their costume. We would like them sent to school in a named plastic bag by Tuesday 26th August. Thanks you! Level 4 Team

HEALESVILLE SANCTUARY REFLECTIONS. I enjoyed the platypus show and it was my favourite part. My second favourite part was the birds of prey show. The strangest part was when I touched Rosie the frog because she felt like a mossy stone. My least favourite part was ‘Zooper woman’ because she was annoying! By Cooper. On Tuesday all the Level 4 students went to Healesville Sanctuary. We went to lots of enclosures to see all the wonderful animals. My favourite animals were the parrots. I liked it when a parrot sat on my arm and was eating out of my hand. I also loved the koalas. It was cute when a baby koala in a pouch punched its foot out. I learned lots of different ways to measure water, the different types of animals and their habitats. We want to give a big thank you to Miss Fittolani for organising a wonderful day. By Chantelle The Level 4’s went to Healesville Sanctuary on Tuesday 5th August. My favourite thing was the ‘Birds of Prey’ show where we saw birds fly around and do amazing tricks that excited us all. I learnt that there are a lot more endangered species than I thought and that there are a lot of ways we can help. By Liam On Tuesday the 5th of August, the Level 4’s went to Healesville Sanctuary to learn all about the animals. When we got there, we met ‘Zoopergirl’ then we got some free time to look around. At 11:40am we all met for lunch and then split into groups to do some fun activities. In one activity, we tested the healthiness of Badger Creek, in another, we observed some platypi and in the third activity, patted a snake and a frog and talked about how pollution effects aquatic life. My favourite part was going into the Land of Parrots enclosure, where a whole lot of us had birds land on us to eat food from our hands. Overall, everyone had a great time, and I really want to go back to see the things that I missed! By Alex F Some highlights of the day were when we were in the bird cage and a bird flew over us and screamed in our ears. We are now half deaf! It was an all-round fun and informative trip to the zoo. Thanks Mrs Fittolani for organising the trip to Healesville Sanctuary. We learnt lots of interesting facts. JSC NEWS-40 Hour Famine

This weekend is the World Vision 40 Hour Famine and tomorrow every student at Antonio Park Primary School will

have the chance to get involved by giving up something that is important to them. This is a powerful and meaningful way for Australians to experience what life is like for children who have to go without every single day. Each grade has chosen to go without something that is important to them and this is what they are giving up: 1EA will go without chairs, 1SP will go without chairs, 1SG will go without tables and chairs. 2BC will go without talking, 2MN will go without talking, 2JS will go without electricity, 2CC will go without wrappers, 2CN will go without furniture, 2BW

What’s Happening in PE?

APPS Junior Comm Games A reminder that we have the APPS Junior Commonwealth Games (Athletics Carnival) coming up on Tuesday 26th August. It will run during the first three sessions of the morning up until recess. Students should dress in their house colours and wear appropriate footwear and clothing for activities ranging from long jump and relays to javelin. There will be a notice coming home to see if you can help on the day with the activities. The house captains will also be assisting. We are all looking forward to the day along with great weather!

The House Athletics Sports were a great success and now the students prepare for the District Sports on Tuesday 2nd September. Thank you to those parents who came along to support the students, and particularly those who assisted the teachers. A notice regarding District Sports will be coming home early next week. The Level 3 students who are participating should only pay for 9 swimming lessons instead of 10 as these Sports clash on this day. These students have been identified and advised this week. The results of the House Athletic Sports were: Mullum Mullum 971 points; Deep Creek 967 points; Yarran Dheran 935 points; Wattle Valley 868 points. Don’t forget the Junior School Aths Sports Day on Tuesday 26th Au-

gust. We would love to see another big turn out of parents. Hooptime: Students in Levels 3 and 4 have been enjoying participating in Hooptime for the first time. A big thank you to Mrs Fitolani for her organi-sation of the days and the group of support staff that have assisted her and the students. Very well done. Hot Shots Tennis: Those students who enrolled in Term 2 will pick up their free T Shirts on Monday. Thank you to Mr Randell for his organisation of this program. The level 2 students are learning about and creating

slide shows using Microsoft PowerPoint. It is great to

see so many skills learnt from Microsoft Word being

transferred across to PowerPoint. The students are lov-

ing adding different coloured backgrounds and making

their slide shows interesting by adding transitions and

animations.

The level 2 students are also using Internet Explorer

and Google to find information and pictures for their

slide shows. It has been very pleasing to see all students

being cyber safe while researching on the net. Great work everyone!

Second hand clothes for the Fete!!! As you all know, next year there will be a clothing stall at the fete. After some thought and discussion, we have decided to include children's clothes as well as adults. So when sorting out those clothes that are now too small/unwanted/out of season, please keep us in mind and drop items off at the office. Thank you. Camp Australia:

This week in OSHC some of our activities include: Craft: This week we are finishing off our sea mural and have been creating our own sea dioramas. We will also be doing sand art, painting and children’s choice of craft. Cooking: We have made a brownie slice, and will be making more yummy treats this week, we've also had spaghetti and baked beans to keep warm, and French toast and pancake Fridays. Inside: Lots of children have been building and using their imagination to make great things with the Lego, duplo, and the large blocks, we've also got a range of puzzles and games for children to play. Outdoors: This week outside the children have been getting out on the playground to play off ground tiggy. soccer and footy are popular with the boys, playing in big teams and showing off their amazing skills and teamwork. How to build resilience
