Dear Holy Name Parish School Families,

“It is cheerful to God when you rejoice or laugh from the bottom of your

heart.” (Martin Luther King)

As we moved through this Christmas season, I could not but think how fortu-

nate we all are to be in a Catholic School environment. Each classroom had a

spirit and joy that reflected the true Christmas message. Our weekly Advent ser-

vices, Lights for Loved Ones, decorations, activities, the Christmas concert and

the classrooms’ commitment to kindness encourage us to rejoice from the

”bottom of our hearts.” The support of families for Toys for Tots and the gen-

erous spirit of the Holy Name community at Thanksgiving time teach our chil-

dren of the bigger world. We will continue to give our children opportunities to

give back. In January we will be participating in the “A bed for every child”

initiative. Presently, there are 160 displaced children on a wait list to receive a

bed. “Give a child a place to dream.” “Understanding, that our support is not

only giving a child a good night’s sleep - it’s an investment in their education

and their future."

As we greet the New Year, we continue to develop programs and curricula that

will move our students forward and prepare them for their next steps. Our goal

is to encourage them to become responsible independent learners who build

habits that look for understanding and strengthen critical thinking skills. We

remind students that “easy” occurs through hard work just like the drive to ex-

cel in activities like soccer, hockey, or piano.

We rejoice in the gifts of our children and we laugh at the delight they share.

We wish you a very Happy New Year of peace, good health, and laughter.

Warmly,

We are grateful to them! The program featured new selections along with Christmas favorites. This year

the theme was “Peace.”

ENGLISH

The fifth grade recently completed reading the novel LOSER by Jerry Spinelli. This book focuses on the

life of a boy who does not fit in. Daily reading and descriptive writing about this novel occurred. Upon

completing the book, the students created a CD cover for the story. They designed an attractive cover,

thought up 10 song titles that could be inspired by the story, wrote a brief summary that described the plot

of the story, and then wrote 2-3 sentences explaining each of the songs on the made-up CD.

For the month of January, the students will be reading and discussing the novel PAX by Sara Pennypack-

er. The story offers strong positive messages about knowing yourself, doing what you know to be right,

and doing your best to fix things if you've done wrong. Again, the students will be reading each day and

interpreting the book’s theme with various writing assignments.

Along with the reading of the different trade book each month, the fifth graders are studying grammar, po-

etry, study skills, writing, and more. Life in the fifth grade is AWESOME!

Math In math class, we just finished learning about mul-

tiplying decimals. The students now know that

the placement of a decimal is important. Current-

ly, we are working on dividing decimals. The stu-

dents have learned that it is easier to divide whole

numbers than decimals, so there are times when

they will need to multiply both the dividend and

divisor by a factor of 10 to make a problem easier

to solve.

Next, we are going to learn about numerical ex-

pressions, patterns, and relationships. This topic

will include using variables to write expressions

and order of operations.
