What’s Happening in Level 1?

We have had another fantastic week continuing the swimming program. It has been wonderful to see the students developing their strokes and becoming more confident and independent over the last two weeks. Tomorrow is their last day and students will celebrate with a fun-filled session. They are very excited! A big thank you to all the parents who have supported the program, we really appreciate your time and effort. Students are enjoying our transactional writing genre and have recently sent off letters to different zoos around Australia. We are keeping our eyes on the school mailbox, hoping to receive some letters back soon. You may also receive a letter from your child soon. We are encouraging parents to send a letter back in the post to the school for their child. They get extremely excited and proud when they get to open their letter and share it with their classmates.

Our Melbourne Zoo excursion is coming up on Wednesday 11th November. Payment and permission slips are due back to school by Wednesday 4th November. A reminder that this weekend is a long weekend. There will be not school on Monday or Tuesday. We hope you enjoy the break and have some special time with your family. See you Wednesday! Level One Elizabeth, Stacey, Lauren and Sophie

Victoria – The Education State Last Thursday we attended a briefing for educational leaders about the Victorian Government’s initiative to make Victoria the Education State. The 2015-2016 budget saw a huge investment from the government into education funding and it is this which will move Victorian schools from being good to be-ing great. The government is promising that every child will have every chance to achieve their potential and learn the skills they need for the future. They have set ambitious targets for student learning and creating schools which further provide for the adults of the future to have the skills which em-ployers will be looking for. The focus on learning for life; happy, healthy and resilient kids; breaking the link; and pride and confidence in our schools resonated with all in attendance. The focus in learning for life includes excellence in literacy and numeracy targets, and also encompasses excellence in science, the arts, and critical and creative thinking skills. Breaking the link will see more students stay in education for longer and reducing the impact of disadvantage. In addressing happy, healthy, and resilient kids the government foresees that more students will be resilient and more physically active whilst in our school system. Pride and confidence in our schools will see parents and local communities report a sense of being proud of their local government school, evident here on a daily basis at Antonio Park Primary School. We strive to create learning communities which are encouraging, supportive, creative, and nurturing – we are ultimately preparing children for life, not just for school. These reforms are very exciting and we look forward to keeping you updated as they begin rolling out in 2016. Keep an eye out for ‘Victoria – the Education State’ starting to appear on number plates! Have a great week! Tim and Annette

What’s Happening in Level 2?

This week the students participated in their second rotation of celebration-focused learning activities as part of our inquiry unit ‘Let’s Celebrate’. The topics presented by our staff include St. Patrick’s Day, Australia Day, Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, Chinese New Year, Melbourne Cup and Halloween. With Halloween coming up this Saturday (31st October) and the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday next week (3rd November), there has been lots of excitement and curiosity about these celebrations in particular. We have been really impressed so far with the prior knowledge that students have brought to these sessions and the questions that students have asked in classroom discussions. One of the great things about inquiry units such as these is that even if you or your family don’t celebrate these events, it’s great to develop an understanding and appreciation of how people in different communities come together to celebrate. If your family participates in a particular celebration, please feel free to send to school any photos, books or other information with your child. We would love to hear from you (and we’ll take care of your special items as well!). This week your child would have received a notice with all the details

for our upcoming Walkathon on Wednesday 25th of November. If you are able to assist on the day, please return the slip at the bottom of the notice and we will pass this on to Ben Clark, our P.E teacher or Mitchell Newman, who is also coordinating the event. If you have not received this notice, please see your classroom teach-er. It’s going to be a fun-filled day! The students are continuing their maths focus on Money. Students are becoming more familiar with making set amounts using different combinations of coins (and notes where applicable). In maths activities students have also been using supermarket catalogues to experience “party planning” and are finding it fun as well as a bit challenging when there is a fixed amount that they are allowed to “spend”. We are continuing our writing focus on Transactional Writing and students are at different stages of producing formal letters to different organisations of interest. It will be exciting to see if we get any replies over the next few weeks. Stay tuned! Have a great week, The Level Two Team

What’s Happening in Level 3?

We’re having another wonderful week in Level Three. Just a reminder that homework is due tomorrow. It has been great to see students putting in the extra effort with the work they are doing at home. Please remember, students need to be reading a minimum of 20 minutes per night. We are looking forward to our end of year celebration to Werribee Zoo. Please ensure all permission slips are returned to your child’s teacher as soon as possible.

Students are enjoying our Indigenous Australian unit. We have re-searched famous Indigenous Australians, looked at the meaning behind the flag and created a Kinship Family Tree using the Burarra language. Keep having chats at home about our unit. Our students would love to tell you all about it! The Level Three Team

What’s Happening in Level 4?

We have been having a fabulous time in our communities in Level 4! It has been wonderful to see our students so engaged in their learning. All students have been taking their role seriously and making adjustments and decisions to help their community function most effectively. We have been pleased with the positive feedback from families and are excited to hear that there are some interesting dinner table conversations about our unit. Grade six student’s photos for their slide show are due tomorrow. Please bring them in on a USB or email them to the office. Level 4 teachers have been impressed with the quality of homework from some of our students. It has been wonderful to see them put in the extra effort and up the quality of their work. Check out these exemplar examples below: The Level 4 Team

What’s Happening in ICT?

Personal information can be revealed in images and videos as well as text. For example, a photo of a young person in their school uniform can provide

the name of the school they attend and their physical location on weekdays. There is also the issue of geotagging to be aware of.

Geotagging refers to the embedding of location data, such as GPS coordinates, in images taken on smartphones and high-end digital cameras. When these images are shared online, the location data is also shared and can be read by other users to find the location of where the image was taken. An image taken at home and then shared online could reveal the young person’s home address. There have even been instances where someone has posted on their social media account that they are away on holidays, allowing clever criminals to search through the GPS coordinates embedded in

other posts and break into their house whilst they are interstate on a vacation.

Location information can also be revealed by location-sharing apps and “checking in” on social network services. This functionality allows users to

share their exact location in real time which can be great for connecting with friends, but could be misused if it ends up in the wrong hands.

So what advice can you pass onto to your child? Disable geotagging on mobile devices and social media accounts (you can find out how to do that in our social media and reputation management booklet) Avoid checking in at personal locations, such as your home or other people's houses, school, work or sporting venues.

ART DISPLAYS Please take the time to have a look (if you haven’t already) at the fabulous artwork created by our students. Every second year I do a unit on the Archibald Portrait Award and call it the APPSiBALD with the Level 3 students and the Level 4 students creating cartoon type portraits in line with the BALD ARCHY award and we call ours the BALD APPSi! These works are along the staffroom and library corridors as well as in the art studio. In the foyer and along the corridor you will find littles figures that represent the Darkling children from the picture book ‘The Duck and The Darklings’ (a nominated picture book in Book Week). These were created by Level 3 and 4 classes. Level 1 and 2 students have work along the corridor and in the art studio – Level 2 completed Pig the Pug Portraits and Level 1 have traced and cut out paper people in patterned pyjamas! Hope you enjoy viewing these great art works by your children, Janet Visual Art teacher

Spring Challenge Aerobics Competition — Geelong

Wow, we had an amazing day, last Saturday at the Aerobics Spring Challenge competition. With over

80 students participating and some for their very first time, the excitement in the stadium was

electrifying! As the students arrived they prepared themselves for their stage performance and

supported each other, by hair spraying, pinning a few extra buns, stretching and tying up shoe laces!

Butterflies set in for a few, but when they entered the stage they began their routine with smiles

from ear to ear!

The coaches were extremely proud of every student and couldn’t have asked for anything more on

the day, they trained exceptionally well leading up to the event and it was wonderful see and hear

the praise and encouragement that they gave each other throughout the day! Congratulations to our

sensational and very talented aerobics students, you bought tears of joy with your enthusiasm and

memorable performances, brilliant efforts all round!

A big thank you to Mrs Patten for giving up her weekend to come and support the teams, we all

appreciate your time and effort towards the aerobics program.

We would also like to thank our dedicated coaches, Courtney, Mr B, Miss Ewan, Ms Hayes and Mrs

Arundel. We all appreciate their time and efforts. Coaching is an all year commitment and we can’t

thank our coaches enough for providing this wonderful opportunity to the students of APPS. A

special thanks to Mr B for mixing and burning all of our music, you’re a super star! There were

certainly many copies made over the year.

Thanks also to our wonderful families who support our passion of aerobics and allow us to be part of

such a great program.

Mrs Arundel, Courtney, Mr B, Ms Hayes and Miss Ewan

A very special thank you to our students who have performed their very last PRIMARY AEROBICS

ROUTINES! It has been an absolute pleasure training you and supporting your dreams over the

years. We wish you all the best for your future success in school aerobics and it would be fantastic

to see you continue your sport into secondary school. Thanks again to all families involved, for your

continued support and dedication.

From all of the APPSs coaches.

Level 3 Hooptime Regional Finals Last Thursday 9 Antonio Park students, Mr B, Mini-Mr B and some fantastic family members went to Nunawading Basketball stadium for the Regional Hooptime Finals. Each team in our pool played 4 games. The Antonio Park Atoms came 2nd overall in our pool and were destined for a qualifying final. The final was an amazing game, with the Atoms shaping up for a sensational comeback victory. However, in the end we were beaten 12 – 9. We all had a great time building our teamwork and communication skills, and loved the opportunity to represent Antonio Park PS in Basketball.

This week we have been busy in the kitchen, with lots of children asking if we can bake and make some delicious treats for afternoon tea. So far we’ve made a banana cake and another slice called Shrek’s stew. For craft we’ve been doing a mixture of things according to what the children enjoy, we’ve done beading and braiding, oil pastel pic-tures and wool craft, as a few have been learning how to knit. Outside we have been enjoying the sunshine and spending lots of time on the play-ground and in the sandpit. We have also been playing basketball, footy and ball games.

Indoors a few children have been using dress ups and the dolls house. We have also been colouring in some spooky pictures for Halloween. Pupil Free Day We will be closed on Monday 2nd November.
