Editor’s Note

A Granddaughter ...

Francis and Sheila Beloe send our love to all who remember us. We wanted to share our exciting news of a beautiful grandaughter. Isabelle was born on 4th of September to Ruth and Kanchon. They are both delighted and we are all enjoying cuddles with the new mem-ber of the family. Sending lots of love from Keswick. Francis, Sheila, Amy and Nim xx

The alert amongst you will have noticed that some of the articles in the last issue were incomplete. Now you would have thought, or at last I did, that sending a Publisher file to the printers would, when opened in their Publisher application, be exactly the same - apparently not!! So not only does it not necessarily see the same font it doesn’t flag up that the text is overflowing the text box …. !! I’ll be sticking to pdf’s in future. Please see page 12 for the missing ‘bits’. The closing date for copy for the December 2015 - January 2016 is-sue is: Friday 27th November, please remember to include anything that may be happening in early February. Articles can be submitted electronically, hand written or verbally. Please bear in mind that the magazine is A5 format and that there will be a minimum of one week between the closing date for copy and the magazines arriving with those who distribute it. This is to allow time for late copy, editing, printing, sorting and circulation to the dis-tributors who then deliver to your letter box.

Thank you, Merrilyn

Notes from the Parish Council

Found ….

Village Defibrillator.

The defibrillator project is moving forward, and as you can see we have in-stalled the telephone box in its new location. This was largely thanks to the efforts of Colin Bullman, Alan Harding, and Peter Fuller to whom I am very grateful. We now need to clean it up and repaint it before installing the equip-ment.

We have had an overwhelming response to the project and we have received enough unsolicited donations to cover the cost of the defibrillator and cabinet. It is now on order. Many thanks to the generous donors.

Housing Needs Survey.

Please keep a look out for the housing needs survey that should have come through your letterbox. It is very important that you complete it even if no members of your family are in need of local housing. It is important to know how many of our villagers or their children need or will need local housing so that we plan future development.

Traffic Survey.

We are planning to conduct another traffic speed survey in the next month or so to provide ammunition for the continuing struggle to reduce traffic speeds through the village. The data can be used to support bids for future traffic speed reduction measures. Among options being considered are: a 40 limit ‘buffer zone’ at either end of the village, and replacement of the flashing signs with a new more modern type (that actually works!).

Minutes of Council Meetings

The minutes of Council meetings are placed on the village notice boards and on the website as soon as they are completed and approved. People have asked if they could be e-mailed to those who are interested or a notification sent that they are available to view. I am happy to do this but setting up some sort of automatic system for registering is beyond my IT skills. If you would like to receive a copy let me know your e-mail

Future Council Meetings

A reminder that Council meetings will now be held in the Village Hall. Usual times – second Tuesday in every month at 19.30.

The Soldier

IF I should die, think only this of me: That there's some corner of a foreign field That is forever England. There shall be n that rich earth a richer dust concealed; A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware, Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam, A body of England's, breathing English air, Washed by the rivers, blest by the suns of home. And think, this heart, all evil shed away, A pulse in the eternal mind, no less Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given; Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day; And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,

In hearts at peace, under an English heaven

Poem by Rupert Brooke

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Poem by John McCrae

We continue to meet fortnightly to enjoy a varied programme of speakers and activities and share meals together.

Once again we were blessed by a lovely afternoon for our strawberry tea in the garden of Pauline and Clifford Price - thanks Pauline and Clifford for your hospitality and hard work.

We regularly share meals together and the last two months have n=been no exception. The weather was also kind to us for our outing to Spalding and Springfield Outlet centre where some of us had a ‘spending spree’, a small number of us took an enjoyable and informative boat trip from Spalding to the centre.

Clifford and Pat Bullman gave a presentation telling us how the ‘village’ in Pat’s front garden originated and how the recent restoration work had been undertaken.

Look out for us at the Village Christmas Market where we will have a Christ-mas Tombola and our ever popular half pot.

If you’d like to join us just come along to one of our meetings or call for more information.

Parish Church Letter

Dear friends, This month we will be celebrating harvest in Soham and Wicken, with ser-vices, meals and a ceilidh to mark the safe gathering of the harvest and demonstrate our thanks to God for his ongoing provision.

In times past the life of a community hinged around its harvest: the cycle of seasons was important and the success of the harvest was vital for life. Now, though, with produce available all year round in the shops, it's easy to lose touch with our dependence on the natural world and on God who sustains it, and to forget our responsibility towards those who farm on our behalf. Per-haps now we need to find a different way to express our gratitude, one that reminds us of our interdependence. Perhaps this could be conveyed through the way we shop.

The British milk crisis, brought to our attention in the media during August (although it is a long-term problem), highlighted the plight of British dairy farmers who operate at a loss because of the price at which they have to sell their milk to supermarket suppliers and because of the competition from over-seas dairy products such as cheese. Those looking at long-term solutions to this problem encourage us to buy British products and, where possible, to buy direct from farmers rather than via supermarkets (http://www.localfoods.org.uk/all-local-foods-map-uk and http://www.fwi.co.uk/livestock/map-where-to-buy-milk-direct-from-farm.htm).

Many farmers overseas also do not receive a fair price for their produce and there are issues around poor working conditions and child labour. The Fairtrade Foundation (http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/) supports farmers and workers by ensur-ing that they are being paid a fair price for meeting certain eco-nomic, social and environmental standards, as well as giving them a Fairtrade premium to be invested in local community

projects. Products meeting the Fairtrade standards carry the Fairtrade mark and can be bought from local shops, supermarkets and the Traidcraft stall that is open after the 10am Sunday service at St Andrew’s.

All food travels a journey from its production site to shop to consumer, and waste food travels away from our homes to landfill. This journey is measured in food miles (http://www.foodmiles.com/) which calculate not only the dis-tance travelled but the environmental impact of that journey. Buying products locally where possible helps to preserve the environment for future genera-tions.

There are many, even in our local community, who struggle to put food on the table for themselves and their families. To buy a little extra each time we shop, and donate this to the local Foodbank, enables us to show our gratitude for what we have by sharing it with others.

As we celebrate harvest this year, let’s reconnect with those who produce what we so often taken for granted as we show our gratitude to God for his provision.

Ruth Dennigan. Licensed Lay Minister, Soham and Wicken

A Top Man from Portsmouth!!

You may remember that we have been collecting plastic

milk bottle tops for recycling that needed transporting

down to the south coast…

We had about 3 dustbins full of bottle tops - and we asked

if anyone was going that way, could they help?

Fortunately, a villager remembered this when they had a

visit from a man from Portsmouth who very kindly agreed

to drop our massive collection of bottle tops off on his way

home. Well done and big thanks to all concerned!

We will continue to collect plastic milk bottle tops - while

the Methodist Church building is off limits, please drop

them in at The Orchard, Stretham Road. BUT PLEASE RE-

MEMBER:

plastic milk bottle tops only (must have a number 2 or

4 in a triangle stamped inside)

they must be WASHED CLEAN and free of labels/stickers

If you're going to Portsmouth, let us know - we have still

more bottle tops to drop off!

Thank you for your help.

PS We also collect ring pulls from drinks cans and used

stamps

Christmas Music

We hope to start choir practice on THURSDAY

22nd OCTOBER 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at II High Street (opposite the pub.) We have our own cop-

ies of ‘Carols for Choirs’! Will six rehearsals be enough to reach a superlative standard?

David Pennal 01353 624295

P.S. A prize for knowing who said

‘When singing carols remember that everything is true except the facts.’

Humour came into our correspondence. I sent her cartoons to lighten the pag-es, usually envisaging some event in the village. The then vicar kept goats and I pictured him tethering his billy outside a home to the disgust of the householder. ‘Oh, don’t worry about the smell, dear lady. William won’t mind a bit.’

This from the time when we were shaping our futures in our heads as far as possible, which was not far while our service stretched on into peace. Demo-bilisation was a very slow process. But I came home to the second chance that had been denied her. I remained friends with her son, this surviving my frank pencil portrait of him that he didn’t like one little bit. It was one of those chosen moments fitted in between the chores of the day.

Another such was a geranium in a pot, ground out in my bedroom between jobs in 1941, remaining in darkness for seventy four years like one or two oth-er probing studies. I showed it to my framer recently on the whim. She took it away and framed it then bought it for one pounds off my framing bill! Better late than never, but I would have rejoiced to receive two quid for it in 1941!

Learning Where You can

Friends of my generation are naturally reducing in number, but one of them from way back who regularly keeps in touch admits to the same feelings a I when at school. We both scorned an advantage, small though it was for all, to move on in education. Perhaps the teaching was partly at fault but the blame lies with us both for our lackadaisical attitude.

Yes, we both failed our eleven plus exams. There was no intent on my part; just a bad day that I recall before any other. My poor enslaved dad was sad about it, mainly because he could not afford to send me to grammar school regardless. My companion in remorse, however, had a father who could pay for his further education. Yet, having been pushed that far, he became equally indifferent to his opportunities and failed his school certificate exam in due course.

Regrets over our failings turned to ambition to further our education, the new attitude brought about by the restrictions of war and the renewed longing to make the best of our lives. We met as art students in Cambridge but it was only recently that we confessed our early failings, this coming after we had made up ground long since.

Trapped into an army life the future looked accessible but making up ground was not easy. While abroad I longed for good correspondence but knew no one who could engage me with a lively exchange of letters. Those from home but polite links with family life and very welcome, but I needed something to bite on to lift my awareness and ability to write, to exchange views that meant something. Coming from Cambridge this seemed ironic. In the services there were few chances to discuss anything at length.

I recall more responsible minds than mine passing the eleven plus only to dis-cover there were no funds at home to buy the uniform needed to move on. Such waste was part of life then, keeping the social levels the same. I just wanted to stretch my awareness and wanted a response to this in letters. My best chum of school days went on to grammar school but was clearly no lover of letter writing. My letters to him went unanswered for so long that his mother took up her pen in apology and started a correspondence that went on gratify-ingly for two years - even after I had left the army. The revelation of her depth of understanding astonished me and made life infinitely more agreeable all that time.

She was the daughter of a railway signalman who in no way could support her into higher education. It just had to stop there and like most she had to go into domestic service until reprieved by marriage and family. I had known her, su-perficially, all my life and had no inkling of her perception. She was from that time on my English teacher, reaching me from a council house in Wicken. She loved poetry and I sent her a volume each Christmas for a few years after-wards. She lived to be almost a hundred and when I last saw her she had grown deaf. Her educational loss was my gain.

News from Wicken Fen & Anglesey Abbey

Both Wicken Fen & Anglesey Abbey recently played hosts to delegates from the around the globe who were attending the 16

th International National

Trust’s Conference, which was held in Cambridge at the beginning of Sep-tember. The theme for the conference was ‘the role of the National Trust movement in the 21

st Century’ – The delegates were certainly inspired by

what they saw & heard about the Fen & the Wicken Fen Vision.

At the end of September, we were blessed with perfect weather as we cele-brated the 25

th anniversary of the restoration and opening of Fen Cottage.

Hundreds of people attended our celebration and a really big thank you to the members of the Wicken Brass Band, who entertained our visitors with two fantastic performances.

This autumn the National Trust is once again holding the Great British Walk in association with our corporate partner, Cotswold Outdoor. Its worth re-membering that both Anglesey and Wicken hold regular weekly Heart Beat Health Walks on Wednesday at Wicken and Thursdays at Anglesey. Walks depart at 10am and last about one hour, covering a distance of ap-proximately 3 -4 miles. At Wicken we are also holding a ‘Walk the Fen’s event on Sunday 18 October. There’s a 7 mile walk in the morning exploring Burwell Fen and Adventurers’ Fen, which leaves at 10am, and a 5 mile walk leaving a 1.30pm to Upware & back. The walks are free and you are welcome to do just one or both – please call the Visitor Centre on 01353 720274 to reserve your place. Cotswold Outdoor will have display marquee at the fen on the 18

th from 12- 3pm, where they will be offering free boot fitting advice

amongst other things.

Up-coming events at Wicken include, a Rush Weaving Workshop (Saturday 10 October, 10am 4pm) with Nadine Anderson, where you can learn how to make rush mats and baskets using locally grown rush. For half-term we have Family Campfire Cooking (Monday 26 Oct 10am) - learn how to prepare and cook a delicious 3 course meal, with the help of our expert chef, using a basic mud oven. There’s plenty on outdoor fun, games and crafts on Autumn Adventure (Tuesday 27 October) and lots of spooky fun on Batty Hal-loween (Friday 30 October).

Tickets for Christmas events at Wicken are now on sale. There’s a Christ-mas Decorations Workshop on Friday & Saturday, 27 & 28 November, Father Christmas at the Fen, Saturday & Sunday 5 -20 Dec, and a Christ-mas Elves Workshop for under 5s on 9, 10, 16 & 17 Dec. Full event infor-mation and ticketing information is available on our website at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wicken-fen

You will need to move quick if you want tickets for Winter Lights at Anglesey Abbey. This year’s festival is Friday –Sunday, 27 November -13 December. Tickets (£12.50 adults, £8.50 child, £40 family ticket) are available from the NT Box Office on 0844 249 1895.

Timely Reminder to Consider Your Heating Needs

As summer fades into memory and the nights begin to draw in once again, it’s a good time to consider your heating oil requirements for the colder months ahead. Heating oil tends to be cheaper in the early autumn months and deliv-eries made faster than once the winter sets in, so now is a good time to think about ordering. If you rely on oil to heat your home, community building, church or business premises, you might like to consider joining Cambridgeshire ACRE’s commu-nity oil buying scheme. Through our partnership with AF Affinity Limited, a subsidiary of Anglia Farm-ers Limited, our scheme makes the most of collective purchasing power. The larger the order we place, the more likely the heating oil suppliers will offer a reduced price for our members. The annual membership fee for domestic users is £20 and that covers as many oil orders as you need during the course of a year. We find that mem-bers need to order around 1000 - 1500 litres a year to achieve sufficient sav-ings to justify the membership fee. We offer an easy, online ordering system and send out email reminders each month so you’ll never forget to order oil again. To find out more about the Scheme, please visit: http://www.cambsacre.org.uk/community-oil-buying-scheme.php or call Alison Brown on 01353 865029.

A Tree in November

The tree beyond my window

stands tall and stately, black

and bare.

Its leaves once gold now shed and

fallen to the ground, some blown

about by gust of wind, others

lie sodden in disarray and cling to the

Green and path around.

Its branches up and out, a filigree

through which on a fine day, a weak

sun will throw some light.

And a sky of palest blue will

bring delight to its winter slumber.

And soon now it will dream

of a new birth, a working within

forming already some new life.

Silently buds will form and appear

each one in a unique pattern; its own

for another year.

And why am I always stunned by

these happenings, do I not yet realise,

creation and nature are an eternal force.

The invisible, yet certain hand of the

Invisible, we call ‘God’

I am writing to introduce myself, and offer my help. My name is Lynne McAulay and I am the Community Development Officer in East Cambridge. My team is here to help people set up and sustain community groups, like lunch clubs, good neighbour schemes, knitting groups, gardening clubs, dog cafes. In fact, this list is endless because if you want to do anything to help older, isolated or vulnerable people in your community, we will try to help. We are funded to do this work and so there is no cost to you, and we can come out to chat about any of your ideas with no pressure for you to do them if you change your mind. We have a long history of helping groups and in the last few months have supported Swaffham Bulbeck re-start their lunch club, including finding them £1000 of funding to help them get going. If you don’t want to set up your own group but want to be involved in helping people in your community, you could consider one of our other volunteering opportunities: Practical Help – our Help at Home volunteers offer free short term practical and emotional support for up to 3 weeks, during an illness at home, crisis or after a hospital stay. The BBQ was held on Sunday 16th August at Hillside House when 35 resi-dents attended and the sun came out for all to enjoy the afternoon.

We welcomed our newest residents Matt, Nicola and their three children who recently moved into Ivy Cottage.

Everyone donated food and wine and the deserts were amazing. Thank you everyone for helping out.

Hopefully a cheese and wine evening is going to be organised for a residents gathering before Xmas.
