Letter from the Publisher

Dear friends,

Here you have Aroos Magazine issue 24, featuring new weddings, designers and vendors.

We have tried to change some parts of our magazine --- to make it more colorful and filled with new ideas for your events, whether they’re weddings, showers or bar mitzvahs.

In addition to the magazine, you have the following available to you:

- Our website, filled with new pictures, videos and articles;

- And our new app in the Apple store, which you also can download via iTunes.

We also are getting ready for our bridal show on May 5, 2013. We are proud to know that we have put together one of the best wedding shows in the Beverly Hills area. So please mark May 5 on your calendar, and remind your friends to join us at the Aroos Magazine wedding show.

I’ll see you all on May 5, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

Love,

Navid SoheilianPublisher

CONTENTSLetter from the Editor

Dear Readers,

It’s the middle of winter, but you wouldn’t know it from the weather out-side! We have just published issue 24 of Aroos Magazine, and we’re now gearing up for our annual wedding show.

This year’s show will be the most ex-travagant we’ve thrown yet - and you know how over the top Navid can be in putting these together! We’ve moved up the road from Irvine to the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza for this year’s show, so plan for a new level of luxe. See page 16 for all the details.

We’re also proud to launch our newest columnist, Dr. Amitiss Nasiri-Ansari, a dentist practicing near South Coast Plaza. In her first issue, she will tackle one of the most embarrassing questions a dentist can be asked: What to do about bad breath?

We have opted in this issue to feature several of the region’s top invitation and stationery designers, so check them out starting on page 54. Each offers a unique touch to their designs, be it hand-made lettering or jewelry-inspired touches.

We are also proud to bring in features with several of the top event designers, which you will find interspersed through-out the magazine.

Visit aroosmagazine.com for all the lat-est, and check us out on Facebook and in the app store.

Until the spring,

Candice YaconoEditor

The 2013 Aroos Wedding Show is on its way! The fifth annual event of its kind, this year’s show also will be the largest and most extravagant. It is slated for 1 to 6 p.m. May 5.

Previously hosted at the Hyatt Regency Irvine, this year’s show will move up the 405 Freeway to the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

Perfectly situated on the fash-ionable West Side of Los Angeles, adjacent to Beverly Hills, the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, 2025 Avenue Of The Stars, will allow brides based in the Los Angeles area to save time on their trip, while giving brides further south the opportunity to see a new venue and spend time on Rodeo

Drive.A favorite part of all of Aroos’ bridal

events, the couture bridal show, will return this year with gorgeous new selections. The hardest part of the day will be choosing just one to wear for your own wedding.

Popular cake, hors d’oeuvre and candy tastings also are slated for this year’s show.

Aroos Magazine’s 5th Annual Wed-ding Show will introduce discerning brides and grooms to the Southern California region’s top vendors. Each show builds upon the last in qual-ity and includes elements like cake tastings, live makeovers, and couture runway shows. Directed towards

couples in the luxury wedding demo-graphic, the carefully curated shows are the highlight of the season for area brides as well as their families and friends.

During this time of anticipation and expectation, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the multitude of projects involved with planning your wedding. This is why we are here. The first bride and wedding magazine published for the Persian community in the English language, hosting an event to guide you to your own suc-cessful wedding.

For more information, reservations or booth inquiries, call (310) 753-9622.

Designer ShowcaseFor this sublime setting, Square Root suspended five crystal and black chandeliers, three of which were enhanced with custom white chiffon fabric chandeliers. White tufted leather panels were custom-built to fit the stagefront, and white satin and chiffon drap-ing was used around the entire ballroom. A high-gloss white dance floor with a black personal-ized logo graced the room, which also featured custom mirrored tabletops and a sweetheart table that was created with all hand-glued Vendella roses. The custom glass-topped cake table also was bedecked with Vendella roses. Other flowers used included white tulips, white phalaenopsis or-chids, white dendrobium orchids, white hydrangea and ranuncu-las. Many were placed in hand-painted black vases. Kissing evolved as a way to assess a potential partner’s compatibility, because it allows the exchange of a host of information about health and hormonal status.

Saliva contains the sex hormone testosterone, which triggers libido—so the more time you spend kissing, the more primed you’ll be for sex, resulting in a more intense sexual experience.

Can you imagine leaning over to give your spouse a kiss, only to see that she or he turns their head away from you because of the way your breath smells?

There are five common causes of bad breath:

- Bacteria breed inside your mouth. These organisms lurk between your teeth and cover your tongue. When bacteria stagnate, they multiply and give off toxins and stinky odors.

- Deep holes in your tonsils called crypts are common cause of halitosis.

- Pungent food such as onion, garlic and fish can cause bad breath.

- Bad habits like any types of smok-ing or chewing tobacco can leave you with a nasty taste and smell in your

mouth.

- Sometimes gastrointestinal (stom-ach) problems or an ulcer can cause bad breath, when you burp and gas is released.

In addition, low carb diets cause ke-tosis, a fat burning state in the body that produces dragon breath.

How to fix the problem:

- Brush your teeth and tongue twice a day.

- Floss once a day for fresh breath. Flossing gets out hidden food par-ticles and removes plaque, which is a coating of bacteria around the tooth.

Flossing can prevent periodon-tal disease.

- Drink lots of water. A lack of water and fluids can lead to dry mouth (xerostomia) and cause bad breath.

- Reduce upset stomach to ease bad breath; try over-the-counter antacids. If you are milk intolerant and have stomach problems, try a lactase tablet with meals.

- Check your sinuses. Infec-tions can cause bad breath.

- Eat yogurt for sweeter breath.

- See your dentist at least ev-ery six months for teeth clean-ing and an oral exam. Your den-tist can check for cavities and gum disease that causes bad breath.

Everything starts with a kiss. Give kissing the attention it deserves. Save your marriage with a minimum 10-second long kiss every day. Life is beautiful. Smile with confidence.

Designer Showcase: Laura Hooper CalligraphyAroos Magazine: How did you get your start?Laura Hooper: I have always had “neat” handwriting and really enjoyed painting and other artistic ventures when I was younger. When my best friend got married just out of college, she asked me to address her wedding invitations. I slowly started getting more and more personal requests, had earn my degree in business and knew I didn’t want to work in a corporate office job. So I worked at building a client base and incorporated my own business and let things take off from there.

AM: What products and services do you offer? LH: Laura Hooper Calligraphy is pleased to offer a wide range of callig-raphy styles to choose from for invitations, envelope addressing, place cards, escort cards and other printed materials. In addition to calligra-phy we offer a couture line of letterpress save-the-dates and invitations. Each set is custom designed and hand-lettered by myself, then printed on eco-friendly cotton papers. Another popular product is our custom maps, which are the perfect addition to any invitation suite and can also be used as save-the-dates or featured in your hotel welcome basket, along with our new corresponding luggage tags. Our maps can be made for any location or designed to complement the specifics of your event. We have also recently started offering event decor pieces such as wood signs, stir sticks, custom napkins and more.

AM: How do you stand out from the competition? LH: Everything we do at Laura Hooper Calligraphy is custom created. The client is in control of his or her own vision and ideas, and we make them a reality. In addition, much of my work is hand-calligraphed, which gives a very distinct look and feel to your printed materials. Even our invitations that are mass-printed, I hand write the calligraphy and scan it to include in the file. We also only use high quality ink, paper and other eco-friendly materials whenever possible.

AM: What are your future plans? LH: just hope to be able to continue doing what I love for clients not only in Southern California, but also across the United States and internation-ally as well. I am proud of what my business has grown into and how much we have expanded beyond just calligraphy. I am looking forward to seeing the continuously changing trends in the wedding industry and how they push all of the wedding businesses into ventures we never would have expected.

A few years ago, I volunteered some time at Mehregan festival for a group called the Keyholders, created by Stop-Gap, a non-profit organization.

Keybolders consists of honorable Iranian American gentlemen who have pledged to help raise the level of awareness regarding domestic violence in the Persian community, by creating opportunities for education about this compelling issue, standing up against it, and providing support to those affected by it. The level of posi-tive feedback I witnessed from people toward this organization was tremen-dous.

The California judicial system has zero tolerance for individuals com-mitting domestic violence. Domestic violence is defined as any incident of threatening behavior, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sex-ual, financial or emotional) between people who are or who have been in-timate partners or family members, regardless of gender and sexuality.

When responding to a domestic vio-lence call, police officers are required to write a police report when a domes-tic violence incident occurs. With prob-able cause, police officers can make

an arrest and submit their report for felony or misdemeanor prosecution. Usually when there are signs of inju-ries, one spouse is headed to jail.

The biggest misconception my cli-ents have about domestic violence is

that their wives, girlfriends, husbands or boyfriends can drop the charges after one is charged with domestic violence. That is simply not the case. Only the District Attorney can drop the domestic violence charges against you, and this is unlikely to occur. The prosecutor, not the victim, makes the charging decision.

The punishment for a charge of domestic violence depends upon the

circumstances of each case. First-time offenders are usually placed on probation, required to serve some jail time or public work service, and com-plete a batterer’s program or anger management classes.

As these types of crimes are ag-gressively prosecuted, jail time is rou-tinely sought, even in first time cases. A conviction for a felony charge of do-mestic violence may lead to deporta-tion as well. One can expect to pay a high price for committing this crime.

Domestic violence feeds on igno-rance. To fight it, we need to bring it out into the light of public examina-tion. Imposing tough punishment is only one way to prevent this crime. In prevention of violence against women, primary prevention must be based on a cultural norm that violence in the family is unacceptable.

It should begin with education at home. The youngest members of our society can learn that “we solve prob-lems with our minds, not our fists”. Armed with facts and courage, we can make a difference by being proactive in our community to end this crime, and reduce the unseen tears of so many people affected by it.
