On September 18, Arcadia Contemporary

in New York City will open its fourth

solo exhibition for artist Aron Wiesenfeld.

Titled Solstice, the exhibit focuses on not

only the changing of the seasons but also

the changes that people can go through.

Recognized for his stories and characters,

Wiesenfeld explores a diff erent angle with

this new body of work.

“The environment plays a more central

role in all of these paintings and the

characters are generally smaller in scale,”

he says. “There is still the active narrative

of what the characters are doing, but it’s

almost like they become a bit secondary

and smaller…A lot of my previous work

was a large fi gure and the environment was

small and low on the horizon to get a sense

of scale for the character. That has sort of

reversed I feel.”

Paintings such as The Orchard and

The Return are examples of this new way

of storytelling for the artist. The Orchard

is an open scene of an apple orchard at

season’s turn with fruit on the ground.

In the distance of the painting are three

young girls playing games and braiding

hair. The Return has a small-scale fi gure in

the foreground—a woman on her bike—with

a larger, more prominent winter landscape

surrounding her.

Another new element that is noticed

in Wiesenfeld’s paintings for the show is

people traveling in a pack. As Wiesenfeld

describes, “Almost like migrating through

the paintings like animals would” or there

seems to be a “mysterious sort of ritual

going on.” Two works depicting this idea

are Border and November. In Border the

figures are moving together off in the

distance; while November has the fi gures

journeying from the foreground past a

snow-covered train.

September 20 from noon to 2 p.m.,

Wiesenfeld will be on hand at the gallery

for a book signing of The Well. The

120-page monograph includes artwork

from the artist’s 15-year career. Solstice

will hang at Arcadia Contemporary

through October 3.
