Virtualization / Cloud – Not a hype, but reality
59% of large enterprises
indicate that Cloud
solutions are already
used in their companies*
Further growth expected:
21% of the remaining
respondents say that their
companies plan to use
Cloud solutions in the
future
79% of the respondents
consider Cloud Computing to
be important for the
business success of their
companies.

with 601 respondents of large enterprises from US, UK, Germany and Brazil
„61% see mobile devices significantly improve value and
usefulness of Social Cloud solutions”
„65% agree, that the most important long-term benefits of Cloud are
greater business flexibility and agility vs. cost savings”
„46% agree to the statement, that embedding “social” capabilities into important
business workflows is critical to their company’s success”

What organizations like about Virtualization / Cloud
• Reduction in Capital Expense
• No servers to buy.
• Hosting for a fixed monthly fee.
• Elasticity (Compute + Memory)
• Increasingly unpredictable data volumes (e.g. Big Data problems).
• Data growth outpacing ability to persist locally.
• Meet spikes in demand without over-provisioning.
• Immediate provisioning + availability
• Potential for higher SLAs vs. internal IT capabilities
“By 2014, the total market for
public Cloud services will be
$56B, up from just $17B in 2009”

SAP HANA virtualized – A complementing technology
Technically speaking:
– Optimization for In-memory computing ┴ virtualization technology
but …
– Private and Public Cloud offerings lower entry barrier e.g. for startups by starting their business small and
later scale along their needs in regards to user and data volume.
– For customers already standardizing on VMware SAP HANA virtualized with VMware vSphere 5.1 offers the
customer further TCO reductions and additional options for planning and managing their multiple non-
productive systems landscapes.
– Virtual provisioning of SAP HANA especially within development can decrease time-to-value for SAP HANA
based applications

SAP HANA Private Hosted Cloud & Virtualization
Currently, the only SAP supported virtualization solution is
– Vware vSphere 5.1 on HANA SPS 05 (or later)
Restrictions
– Limited to non-productive and non-performance critical use
o Only single node configurations
o Max. 60 virtual cores / 384 GB RAM (recommended)
o No Overcommit of CPU / Memory
o No HANA DB clusters, no HANA HA / DT
– Underlying HW must be validated to be used with SAP HANA
– Preinstalled VM is provided through certified SAP HANA appliance vendor

Appendix Further considerations regarding SAP HANA being virtualized / within the cloud

SAP HANA virtualized – Performance considerations
SAP HANA is designed for high performance,
running on Intel Xenon processors
– Performance within virtualized environments may be sufficient to demonstrate possibilities and
features of SAP HANA. However, as it has been optimization for Intel hardware, SAP HANA may
not perform well within virtualized environments.
– Key capabilities of virtualization technology like overprovisioning are not applicable for in-memory
optimized applications like SAP HANA.
– The maximum number of cores and/or amount of memory per VM currently limits the use of
virtualization technology to development & test environments
– HW resource manager of hypervisor may be less optimized or even interfere with autonomous
HW utilization of the built-in SAP HANA database resource manager
© 2013 SAP AG. All rights reserved. 27 Customer
SAP HANA virtualized – TCO considerations
SAP HANA is designed for parallelization and scale-out
with built-in cluster and resource management
– Use of virtualization technology can further decreases TCO through fast and flexible provisioning
techniques, cloning of VMs or by isolating different workloads running on the same physical
server.
– However, since SAP HANA SPS05 multi-SID installation or storage based system copy is also
supported using standard SAP HANA LM tools without additional licenses costs.

SAP HANA virtualized – Conceptual considerations
SAP HANA is designed to serve as one data platform
for OLTP and OLAP workload
– Virtualization can help isolates workload from one and another and to better utilize hardware over
the number of VMs, sharing the same physical resources.
– In contrast, the separation into multiple VMs may contradict with the business need to establish
SAP HANA as one data store for several scenarios
