VIDEO DISPLAY SYSTEM An addition was made to Tate Rink, a nearly 13-foot by 23-foot addition that debuted two weekends ago. Dak- tronics was been chosen to add a new LED video display system to Tate Rink and thus far the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Thanks to the generosity of U.S. Military Academy graduates and Army Hockey letterwinners David Harkins (Class of 1962) and his wife Sheryll and Brian Concannon (Class of 1979) and his wife Grace, fans will have an unri- valed experience in college hockey. Measuring 12-feet, 5-inches high by 23 feet wide, the board is hung in the South end of Tate Rink near the Zam- boni entrance. The display has 384 lines and 704 columns of resolution. Starting lineups, ceremonial face-offs, in-game action, replays, end of period highlights, stats, player interviews, postgame reaction, features, out-of-town scores, postgame highlights and game previews are shown on the video board. Daktronics designed, manufactured and installed the system which is capable of showing one large image or an image divided into separate windows for high-clarity video and graphics. The wide-angle viewing capabilities ensure great views from your seat. The installation also included an update to the existing center-ice hung structure with two new indoor color LED message center displays. ARMY VS. CLASSY SENIOR Army senior captain Cheyne Rocha is one of 10 stu-dent-athletes who were announced as finalists for the 2012-13 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate hockey. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, charac-ter and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loy-alty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platforms in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communi-ties. Rocha was one of 20 nominees and was selected as a finalist by a media committee. Fans will have a say in who the winner is and voting is now open at seniorCLASSaward.com. Fans have until March 25 to vote. Those totals will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner, which will be announced during the 2013 Frozen Four in Pittsburgh, Pa., April 11 and 13. Rocha is Army’s first finalist for this award since Bryce Hollweg in 2008. A three-time Atlantic Hockey Association Academic All-Star, Rocha posted the highest GPA among league defensemen as a junior and was named Student-Ath-lete of the Year. A Dean’s List student in all seven of his semesters, Rocha was a Rhodes Scholar candidate, received the Distinguished Cadet Award for academic excellence three times and was a three-time winner of the Super-intendent’s Award for excellence for ranking in top five percent of class. In addition to his work on the ice, Rocha was instru-mental in beginning House of Blues, an awareness cam-paign for prostate cancer. Rocha coordinated the idea and it is now the preferred charity of Atlantic Hockey He is active with the Special Olympics and Neighbor-hood Knights, a team group that provides community service and volunteers with the Army Junior Black Knights hockey program.

RACKING UP SHOTS Army totaled a season-best 56 shots on goal during a 2-2 overtime tie with Bentley on Feb. 16. The shots on goal total was the first time Army topped 50 since Nov. 26, 2011 when the Black Knights registered 50 in a 3-3 overtime tie at Robert Morris. Against Bentley, Army collected 11 shots on goal in the first period, 24 in the second, 13 in the third and eight in overtime.

SLEDDING ALONG For the sixth straight season, Army competed against the Long Island Rough Riders in a sled hockey game. Following the Feb. 16 2-2 overtime tie against Bent-ley, Army traded the skates for sleds and competed in a 20-minute exhibition game against the team from Long Island. Sled hockey is played mainly by people with various lower extremity disabilities in which players are seated on sleds, which are affixed to two hockey skate blades under the seat. The sleds are about three inches off the ice and around three feet long depending on the size of the player. The sled glides on the blades and a metal bar located at the front of the sled. Players use their arms to propel themselves along the ice and dig picks, on the ends of two short hockey sticks, into the ice to pull themselves forward. Players have a right and a left stick (the blades are curved dif-

ferently) that are miniature copies of a typical hockey stick, except for the metal picks (like figure skate toe picks) on the ends. Players shoot, pass, and propel themselves with the sticks.

TUESDAY MATINEE Army played a rare mid-week afternoon game at American International on Tuesday, Feb. 26. The game faced-off at 3:30 p.m. in a 4-1 AIC win. The game was originally scheduled for Feb. 9 but was moved because of the storm that blanketed the northeast in early Feb-ruary.

WORLDY COMPETITION Not only is Army playing a challenging non-con-ference schedule as well as the competitive Atlantic Hockey Association games, the Black Knights are also matching up with international competition. Army dropped a 6-2 decision to the Russian Junior All-Stars on Dec. 27 and posted a 4-1 victory over Cana-da’s Royal Military College on Jan. 26. Both contests were exhibition games.

CANADIAN SUCCESS Army posted its third straight win over Royal Mili-tary College with a 4-1 victory over its Canadian breth-ren at a sold-out Tate Rink on Jan. 26. Thane Heller scored twice and Jonathan Gehrt and Maurice Alvarez registered a goal and assist. Ryan Leets turned away 12 shots to earn the win in goal. Army now leads the all-time series with RMC 41-29-7, including a 27-12-1 mark at West Point. The 78th meeting is scheduled for Kingston, Ontario, during the 2013-14 season. Army and RMC first met in 1923 when then Brig. General Douglas MacArthur wrote a letter as superin-tendent of the U.S. Military Academy to Maj. Gen. Sir Ar-chibald MacDonnell, commandant of the RMC, to sug-gest they compete. Letters and ideas were exchanged before the first game was played at West Point on Jan. 23, 1923.

RAISING AWARENESS The Army hockey team held its annual House of Blues on Jan. 5, 2013 and helped raise prostate cancer awareness. The first 500 fans through the turnstiles received t-shirts, bracelets were handed out and Relay For Life was on site. Army wore its blue sweaters for the game with blue socks and laces. Army senior captain Cheyne Rocha, who was instru-mental in the annual awareness campaign, participated in a ceremonial faceoff. His father, Larry, a cancer survi-vor, dropped the puck. Rocha fittingly scored his first goal of the season in Army’s 4-1 loss to the nationally ranked Colonials. It was Rocha’s first goal since Feb. 25, 2011, a span of 27 games.

BACK-TO-BACK Army posted consecutive shutouts for the first time since the 2007-08 season when the Black Knights blanked Canisius and #19 Robert Morris. Rob Tadazak was in goal for both shutouts, his first two of his career. He made 25 saves in a 1-0 overtime win on Dec. 30 at Canisius and returned the next game and was credited with 22 stops during a 5-0 victory op-posite #19 Robert Morris on Jan. 4.. Josh Kassel was in goal as Army shut-out AIC on back-to-back games on Feb. 15-16, 2008.

WEEKLY ACCOLOADES Freshman Willie Faust picked up his second Atlan-tic Hockey Association Travel Team USA Rookie of the Week honor after scoring twice in a 5-0 win over #19 Robert Morris on Jan. 4.

VOTE FOR HOBEY Army senior forward Andy Starczewski is among the candidates for the Hobey Baker Award and the fan vot-ing portion of college hockey’s biggest award is now open. Fans can log on to hobeybakeraward.com and make their selection between the 77 candidates. From now until March 10, fans will have their say in narrowing the list to the top-10. The second phase of fan voting begins March 22 to determine the Hobey Hat Trick finalists. The winner will be announced April 12 as part of the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh, Pa. Award criteria include candidates emulating the exceptional character traits exhibited by the award’s namesake, Hobey Baker. An American super-hero, Bak-er was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America’s greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football at Princeton. Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achieve-ment and sportsmanship.

OVERTIME HEROICS Army’s 1-0 overtime win against Canisius on Dec. 30 showed just how hard it is to win in the extra session. When freshman Joe Kozlak converted a pass from Mac Lalor and R.J. Burns nearly three minutes in, it gave Army its first overtime win since Jan. 7, 2006 when the Black Knights topped Mercyhurst 3-2. The victory was Army’s first road overtime win since edging Iona, 6-5, on Feb. 22, 2002. It was the first time Army had beaten an opponent 1-0 in overtime.

SHOOTING BLANKS Sophomore Rob Tadazak turned away 25 shots for his first career shutout in a 1-0 overtime win at Canisius on Dec. 30. Tadazak, making his 18th career start, recorded sev-en saves in the first period, three in the second, 10 in the third and five in overtime. He stopped a point-blank opportunity seconds before Army scored the game-winning goal. The shutout by Tadazak was the first for an Army goalie since Jay Clark blanked Connecticut Jan. 22, 2010 with 31 saves.

EXHIBITION FUN Army returned to the ice following a 16-day break for Term-Ending Exams and the holidays with an exhibition game against the Russian Junior All-Stars. Despite out-shooting the Russians 43-33, Army fell 6-2 as Mac Lalor and Joe Kozlak collected goals. A crowd of 2,636 -- the second sell out of the season for Army – turned out to watch a well-played, physical contest.

The Russian Junior All-Stars played six games dur-ing their trip to North America. In addition to Army, they also played Yale and Brown and traveled to Canada for a pair of games. They began their trip with a game op-posite the Boston Junior Bruins. The Russian Junior All-Stars are comprised from a 32-team development league for the professional and highly regarded Kontinental Hockey League with teams from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia and Slovakia.

MID-SEASON ACCOLADES The USCHO released its mid-season all-stars and Army had a pair of mentions. Senior Andy Starczewski was one of three forwards, along with Brett Gensler of Bentley and Giancarlo Iuorio and Brian Riley was the mid-season Coach of the Year. Starczewski was lauded for leading the team of-fensively, while Riley gained recognition for having the team near the top of the league standings despite such a young roster. Steve Weinstein of Bentley and Chris Aracino of RIT were the defensemen, while Matt Blomquist of Bentley was the Rookie of the Year and Carsen Chubak of Ni-agara the MVP.

TV TIME Army appeared on national television for the third time this season and tied Air Force, 3-3, in overtime, on Jan. 12. Ben Holden, Dave Starman and Shireen Saski called the game on CBS Sports Network. Army’s season-opening game with Nebraska-Omaha was shown live to a national audience on NBC Sports Network. Dave Strader provided play-by-play with Pierre McGuire handling color commentary from between the benches.

CBS Sports Network also carried Army’s dominating 5-0 victory over #19 Robert Morris on Jan. 4. Holden and Saski were joined by Jim Paradise for the call of that victory. This marks the 10th consecutive season Army has played a game on national television. Army shows a 1-1-1 record on national television this season.

HONORS FOR LALOR Army sophomore defenseman Mac Lalor was named the Atlantic Hockey Association Player of the Week on Dec. 17. Lalor scored twice in Army’s 4-2 loss to Mer-rimack on Dec. 11. Lalor was moved to forward for the first time in his Army career for the non-conference matchup at Mer-rimack. Instead of his usual right defenseman spot, he played right wing. Lalor was at his usual spot at the point on the power play where he scored two goals less than a minute apart to help Army rebound from a 2-0 deficit. It was the first Player of the Week honor for Lalor and the fifth time this season an Army player was hon-ored by the league.

TK The Army Athletic Association honored former hock-ey player, Officer Representative and athletic depart-ment supporter Major Tom Kennedy during the Dec. 1 hockey game vs. American International at Tate Rink. Kennedy, a 2000 U.S. Military Academy graduate, was killed in action in Afghanistan in August of last year. Army wore its black sweaters for the game with “Kennedy” across the back with an American flag. A letterman on the hockey team, Kennedy returned to West Point and served as a Tactical Officer where he impacted the lives of thousands of cadets. In addition to his work with all of the cadets, Kennedy was an Of-ficer Representative with the hockey program and was elected president of the Army Hockey Parents Associa-tion. He was deployed out of Fort Carson, Colo., follow-ing his term at West Point. The Army hockey team is wearing “TK” stickers on its helmets and there are two spots on the ice with his initials and an American flag. All fans at the game re-ceived similar stickers. Prior to the game, Army hockey head coach Brian Riley, who recruited Kennedy when he was an assistant coach, addressed the crowd from the ice and spoke about Kennedy’s impact and selflessness while Kenne-

dy’s family, including his wife, Kami, twin children Brody and Maggie, parents George and Patricia and brothers, John and George were on the ice. Army captain Cheyne Rocha and alternate captain Andy Starczewski presented #14 Kennedy jerseys to his twins and his wife participated in a ceremonial fa-ceoff. Following the emotional, hard-fought 4-3 victory, both teams stood at attention for the West Point alma mater. A pair of Army gloves and helmet were left on one blue line, Army was at center ice and AIC stood on the far blue line. A sold-out crowd of 2,648 was on hand.

STONE WALL Army senior alternate captain Ryan Leets enjoyed a stellar run in November and December to help Army remain near the top of the standings. From Nov. 16 until Dec. 1, he was 3-0-1 with a 1.93 goals against average and .928 save percentage. Leets yielded just seven goals over that span and was in net as Army beat Sa-cred Heart (3-2), Bentley (3-2) and AIC (3-2) and tied Connecticut (2-2). Leets held Bentley to just a pair of goals, two below their average which, at the time, led the country.

LAKER DAD Things may be a little different next season for Army hockey coach Brian Riley when the Black Knights play Mercyhurst. His oldest son, Jack, has committed to play for the Lakers and will join the team next season. He currently plays for the New Jersey Hitmen.

CLARK’S CORNER Army senior defenseman John Clark is authoring a blog this season at www.goARMYsports.com. Clark will provide periodic updates throughout the season, pro-viding fans an inside look into the Black Knights. Clark scored his first career goal on Feb. 23, in his 125th career contest.

TURKEY DAY TRAVEL For the first time in the nine-year tenure of Army hockey coach Brian Riley, the Black Knights did not play over Thanksgiving. With a roster that features 13 freshmen, Riley opted for the players to return home for the first time since summer training began for most of the players. The team enjoyed three days off before returning to practice on Sunday, Nov. 25.

LEAGUE HONORS Senior Andy Starczewski and freshman Willie Faust collected a pair of Atlantic Hockey Association honors for their performances Oct. 19-20. Army beat Sacred Heart 5-2 and tied the Pioneers in overtime the next night, 4-4. Starczewski registered his second career hat trick and totaled five points in a weekend series with Sacred Heart and earned AHA Travel Team USA Player of the Week accolades. Faust netted a goal and two assists and picked up AHA Travel Team USA Rookie of the Week honors.

THE CAPTAINS Senior defenseman Cheyne Rocha will serve as the Black Knights’ captain during the 2012-13 season. Seniors Ryan Leets and Andy Starczewski and junior Brian Schultz will all handle alternate captain duties.

NEIGHBORHOOD KNIGHTS Seeking to give back to the community, the Army hockey team has formed “Neighborhood Knights,” to volunteer their time. The group has been actively involved in the local community and plans to utilize its time in a number of projects that benefit the environment and recreation areas. “I am very proud of our players,” said Army hockey head coach Brian Riley. “The players decided that they wanted to be more involved and have done all of this work on their own. Being a West Point cadet or a Di-vision I hockey player is hard enough on its own, yet these guys are finding time to make a difference in their community and that says a lot about their charac-ter.” The Neighborhood Knights began their service at Brooks Park in Fort Montgomery, N.Y., where several team members raked leaves and helped clean up the area. Picking up trash in the park and neighboring stream and trails and preparing the park for spring and

summer use was the focus of the day. In addition to work at Brooks Park, the team is also actively involved in the Special Olympics. The Neighborhood Knights were also involved in 9/11 tributes and are planning to Adopt-A-Highway in the near future, cleaning a 1.3 mile strip in Fort Montgom-ery, N.Y., as part of a two-year agreement. Currently, members are working with local youth hockey teams with several projects in the works.

ABBOTSFORD HEAT Former Army hockey standout Zach McKelvie is now with the Calgary Flames affiliate Abbotsford Heat. After two seasons with the Boston Bruins, McKelvie signed with Abbotsford in the offseason and will wear No. 4. A 2009 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, McK-elvie served in the Army for two years before joining the Bruins organization. He was stationed in Fort Benning, Ga., as an infantry officer and will serve eight years of reserve time. McKelvie, listed as a 6-foot-2, 200-pound defense-man, played in 39 games last season with the Provi-dence Bruins with a goal and an assist and 46 penalty minutes. This season, McKelvie has appeared in 40 games for the AHL squad with one assist.

FROZEN IN PITTSBURGH The Frozen Four will be held in Pittsburgh, Pa., this season at the CONSOL Energy Center, April 11 and 13.

FIRST FAMILY OF HOCKEY It’s tough to argue with those who call the Riley’s the “first family of hockey.” From Jack Riley winning an Olympic gold medal to his five children all playing Divi-sion I hockey, the evidence is on the ice. Jack Riley coached at Army from 1951-1986, win-ning 542 games in the process. He was also selected to coach the 1960 U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team and led the squad to its first gold medal in the sport.

Jack’s five children all served as captains at their re-spective schools. Rob and Mark both played at Boston College while Jay was a star at Harvard. Brian gradu-ated from Brown University while Mary Beth, the lone female, was a captain at St. Lawrence University. Rob took over the Army head coaching position from his father in 1986 and then turned the program over to Brian in 2004.

GETTING TO KNOW THEBLACK KNIGHTS

#1 Rob Tadazak didn’t start skat-ing until he was eight and played fi ve years of junior hockey.

#4 Cody Ikkala is the only player on the team who is engaged to be married. His fi ancée is a class-mate at West Point.

#5 John Clark can sing, play the guitar, trumpet and saxophone and was once featured on ESPN Top-10 Plays. He was #4 when he scored a breakaway during as a high school senior. Clark and his Lake of the Woods teammates were playing St. Paul Johnson in an outdoor game on a river in Baudette, Minn., during the fi rst Hockey Day in Minnesota. Clark’s goal sealed the 5-3 victory and earned him a spot in Top Plays.

#10 Zak Zaremba comes from a military family. His father, both grandfathers and most of his great uncles were all enlisted in the military. His full name is Zach-ariah because his parents misin-terpreted a bible verse. Elizabeth,

the mother of John the Baptist, was supposed to be barren. His mother’s name is Elizabeth and was told that she, too, wouldn’t be able to have kids. Zacharias was actually Elizabeth’s husband, not her son. His name should be John instead of Zachariah.

#11 Brian Schultz went bowl-ing at least once a week when he played juniors. Also served as a waiter, on rollerblades, at Sonic. His major is Nuclear Engineering.

#13 Jon Bobb didn’t start play-ing ice hockey until he was 12. While he is a lefty shot, he does everything else right-handed.

#17 Mike Santee began spend-ing time at ice rinks as a one-month old with his father, an Olympic fi gure skater. In addi-tion to football, baseball, soccer, basketball and hockey, he also participated in fi gure skating and gymnastics.

#18 Mac Lalor not only plays gui-tar, he has dual citizenship in the U.S. and Canada and is a former skateboarding standout.

#21 Andy Starczewski started skating at age 2 and is very vo-cal in his support of the New York Yankees.

#24 Maurice Alvarez fi rst played defense as a 16-year old. A for-mer competitive paintball player, he traveled all over the country to participate in tournaments. Is also a former freestyle skier.

#25 Cheyne Rocha is apply-ing for Rhodes (Oxford), Mitchell (Ireland) and Gates (Cambridge) Scholarships. Fancies himself an excellent cook after working in a restaurant for four years.

#30 Ryan Leets earned the Su-perintendent’s Award for Excel-lent for achieving a top-5 class ranking in 2013. Earned the Dis-tinguished Cadet Award for a 3.67 or above GPA for two consecutive semesters. Received the Dean’s Pentathlete Award for receiving an A- or above in all physical, mili-tary and academic classes for the semester. Is the lone Civil Engi-neering major on the team.

When Brian Riley was named Army hockey’s 16th head coach in 2004, he was familiar with West Point. Following 14 years as an assistant to his brother Rob and a lifetime of hockey educa-tion from his father Jack, Brian Riley knew all about the U.S. Military Academy. The knowledge, preparation and hard work have all paid off for Brian as he adds to the Riley legacy and Army hockey. Just the third Army hockey coach in the past 62 years, Brian Riley has made his mark on a program coached by his father and brother in just eight seasons. The Vice President for Membership of the American Hockey Coaches Association, Bri-an Riley is a three-time Atlantic Hockey Association Coach of the Year, has guided Army to eight consecutive Atlantic Hockey Association playoff berths, led the team to its the fi rst regular season championship in program history, posted non-conference victories and had four players chosen to participate in the NCAA Frozen Four Skills Competition. Brian Riley has posted a 98-145-43 mark during his tenure behind the West Point bench after succeeding his brother, Rob who briefl y retired from coaching in 2004. Prior to Rob, Jack Riley, their father, stood behind the Black Knights bench for 36 seasons. In addition to his success at Army, Jack Riley also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to a stunning gold medal in the 1960 Games. Utilizing a defensive system that focuses on physical, intense play and opportunistic scoring, Riley has led his squad to the playoffs in all eight of his seasons and has regis-tered non-conference wins each of the past four campaigns. In 2011-12, Army posted seven ties and four wins, including victories over Canadian rival Royal Military College (9-1), ECAC Hockey’s Rensselaer (3-2) in the Toyota/UConn Classic and a dramatic 4-4 overtime tie with Air Force. Riley helped Army resume its rivalry with its military brethren for the fi rst time since 2006 and then watched as 12 players registered points in the eight-goal victory. Army qualifi ed for the Atlantic Hockey Playoffs but dropped a pair of games to Holy Cross in the opening round. The 2010-11 team won 11 games and earned home ice for the playoffs while a pair of players – Marcel Alvarez and Cody Omilusik earned All-Atlantic Hockey League accolades. Among the victories, was a 5-2 triumph at the University of Massachusetts at the Mullins Center, a dramatic 5-4 win at Air Force, a three-point weekend against Robert Morris and a 4-1 victory over AIC outdoors at Rentschler Field in Hartford, Conn. During the 2009-10 season, Riley helped the Black Knights to an 11-win season and the No. 6 seed in the conference playoffs. Among the victories was a three-point weekend against Air Force at Tate Rink, a 4-4 overtime draw at Colgate and a 2-1 win at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the second consecutive year of a non-conference win. In the postseason, Riley was selected as an assistant coach of the East squad at the NCAA Frozen Four Skills Competition where he coached Army’s Owen Meyer, the fourth Black Knight selected for the honor, joining Brad Roberts (2006), Luke Flicek (2008) and Zach McKelvie (2009). In 2008-09, with a team of 12 freshmen, Riley guided the Black Knights to the Atlantic Hockey Association playoffs for the sixth straight season. Included in the wins was a shock-ing upset of #2 Miami, 3-2 in the consolation game of the Ohio Hockey Classic. Five years ago, Riley led Army to its fi rst regular season championship and won 19 games for the second consecutive season. Army went 19-14-4 in 2007-08, winning the AHA regular season title and the top seed in the conference tournament. For the second straight year, Army advanced to the semifi -nal round. During the 2007-08 season, Army put together a league-best nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1) to clinch the regular season title. Army won the fi rst two games of the best-of-three series with Sacred Heart to advance to the semifi nals where a loss to Mercyhurst ended the season. In 2006-07, the Black Knights hosted a league playoff game at Tate Rink for the fi rst time and beat Bentley, 6-2. They followed that with a 3-1 win over Connecticut in the semi-fi nals before losing to Air Force in the fi nals. Riley was named the league coach of the year for the fi rst time in 2005-06 when the team fi nished fi fth in conference play after overcoming a 0-7-1 start. In his fi rst campaign behind the Black Knights’ bench, Riley engineered one of the

biggest upsets in the NCAA when Army stunned Colgate, 3-2, in Hamilton, N.Y., for his fi rst career win. Riley led his team to 11 wins during that initial season, setting the Academy record for most victories by a rookie head coach. He broke the record established by his brother, Rob, in 1986-87. In addition, the younger Riley also piloted the Black Knights to their fi rst postseason win in more than a quarter century when Army defeated Ameri-can International College, 5-3, in the fi rst round of the Atlantic Hockey tournament. Riley’s father, Jack, started it all in 1951 when legendary football coach and athletic director at West Point, Earl “Red” Blaik, hired him to head the hockey pro-gram. What began as a one-year contract, turned into a 36-year Hall of Fame career that culminated in 542 victories. Riley’s brother, Rob, took the reins from his father in the fall of 1986 and racked up 306 victories of his own over 18 winters. When Rob offi cially stepped down in the summer of 2004, he passed the torch (and family tradition) on to his younger brother. Brian brings an extensive resume to his “dream job” at the Academy. No stranger to West Point or the “West Point Experience,” the younger Riley has spent 14 years as an assistant coach to his brother, eventu-ally rising to the position of associate head coach. Brian played an integral role in recruit-ing many of the athletes that helped Army put together back-to-back 20-win seasons and tutored Corey and Ian Winer, former Colorado Avalanche forward Dan Hinote Riley also recruited Zach McKelvie, a hulking defenseman now part of the Boston Bruins organization. Boston signed McKel-vie to two free agent contracts while he was serving his country and invited him to NHL training camp this season before assigning

him to their AHL affi liate in Providence, R.I. Riley helped the Black Knights string together eight straight postseason appear-ances as members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and Atlantic Hockey. His expertise in working with the defense molded Army’s past squads into one of the most stingy blue line units in college hock-ey. A 1983 graduate of Brown, Riley began his coaching career in 1984 with a three-year stint as an assistant coach at SUNY Plattsburgh. During that period, the Cardi-nals advanced to the NCAA Division III Tour-nament three times, reaching the champi-onship game twice. In 1988, Riley moved to the Division I ranks at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. There, he teamed with his cousin, Bill Riley, for one season, directing the River Hawks to the NCAA Tournament, giving him

his fourth straight post-season appearance. The following winter, Riley joined his brother’s staff at West Point for the fi rst time where he spent the next seven seasons. In 1996, the West Point native left the comfort and familiarity of the Academy, where he grew up, for the great Midwest and a head coaching position at Shattuck St. Mary’s Prep School in Farib-ault, Minn. There, Riley

carved out a stellar two-year coaching ca-reer in which his teams compiled an impres-sive 94-19-10 record. In his fi rst season, Riley directed the squad to a 40-9-7 record before improving to 54-10-3 in 1997-98. In 1999, Riley returned to West Point, where he served at his brother’s side un-til assuming the head coaching position in 2004. During his collegiate playing days, Ri-ley co-captained Brown’s hockey squad his senior season, earning honorable mention All-Ivy League. He was presented the Class of ’36 Trophy for his outstanding contribu-tions over his four-year career and the Pat-rick Jones Trophy for most team spirit. Prior to starring for Brown, Riley at-tended New Hampton Prep and led the hockey team to a No. 1 national ranking among prep schools. He was chosen as the school’s most outstanding athlete while captaining both the soccer and hockey teams. Riley completed course work on his master’s, earning a graduate degree in Education from Boston University, in May 2003. Riley is married to the former Marybeth Feldman of Highland Falls, N.Y. The couple resides at West Point with their three chil-dren: Jack, 20, Danielle, 18, and Brendan, 16. Jack Riley is playing his fi nal year of ju-nior hockey for the New Jersey Hitmen be-fore enrolling at Mercyhurst College to be a member of the hockey team the following season. Danielle is beginning her fresh-man year at Merrimack as a member of the women’s lacrosse team. Brendan is in his junior year of high school and plays both golf and hockey.
