ALL-TIME SERIES

VS.

TALE OF THE TAPE

NOTHING BUT CLASSArmy senior close defenseman Brendan Buckley is one of 20 NCAA Division I lacrosse student-athletes who excel both on and off the fi eld and are candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award. The candidates must be a senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Buckley, a team tri-captain, carries a 3.987 cumulative grade-point average and ranks 18th in his class of 1,079 cadets. He posted a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester and was a fi rst team Academic All-American last spring. The reigning Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and two-time all-league honoree, Buckley has been named to the Dean’s List all seven semesters at West Point and has been honored with the Distinguished Cadet Award and Superintendent’s Award for Excellence. An Engineering major, Buckley will enter the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and posted with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Schweinfurt, Germany.

SCOUTING MICHIGANIn search of its fi rst win of 2013, Michigan is coming off an 18-7 loss at then-No. 4/4 Johns Hopkins last Saturday. The Wolverines have also played Penn State (L, 11-6) and Bellarmine (L, 12-6) in 2013. Freshman midfi elder Kyle Jackson leads the team with six goals and one assist. Jackson tallied a pair of goals against Johns Hopkins. Freshman attackman Peter Kraus also added two goals against the Blue Jays last week. Kraus is one of three players - to include Thomas Paras and David McCormack - with three goals on the season. The Wolverines’ special teams have struggled, as the team is just 3-of-11 on man-up chances and 18-of-70 in the face-off “x.” Freshman Gerard Logan has started all three games in the cage and owns a 13.38 goals-against average and a .552 save percentage. Michigan is in its second year as a Division I program and is just behind Army with one of the youngest rosters in the country (see page 5).

NEW KID ON THE BLOCKSophomore midfi elder Alex Newsome showed fl ashes of talent with a two-goal freshman campaign, but the Richmond, Va., native has had a breakout beginning to 2013. Starting all four games on the Black Knights’ fi rst midfi eld line, he is the team’s third leading scorer with 12 points (8G, 4A). Newsome posted back-to-back hat tricks in Army’s two victories, which included a career-high four goals and two assists in a 14-8 win over VMI (Feb. 16). Of Newsome’s 20 shots taken, 12 have been on cage and eight have resulted in goals (shooting a team-high .400). He played in fi ve games as a freshman.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN ENDThe nation’s longest goal-scoring streak ended last Sunday as senior attackman Garrett Thul was held scoreless for just the second time in his career at No. 18/18 Syracuse. He has made a career of gaudy numbers and a knack for serious goal-scoring ability, which the streak demonstrated from April 3, 2010 until Feb. 16, 2013. Ironically, the fi nal game of the streak was a career afternoon for Thul, who scored a career-best seven goals in a 14-8 win over VMI at Michie Stadium. He scored 116 goals during the impressive streak.

HEAVY HITTERSWhile the Patriot League continues to grow its national prominence, it is hard to argue bigger heavy hitters than seniors Garrett Thul (Army) and Peter Baum (Colgate). The duo will go down as two of the top offensive players to play in the league and have quite the race ahead of them. The reigning Tewaaraton Award winner, Baum broke the Patriot League’s career goals record last weekend with 139. Not far behind, Thul ranks third with 134 goals during an impressive career. Baum and Thul also rank as the nation’s top two hat trick men with 29 and 25, respectively. While Baum is already Colgate’s all-time leading scorer, Thul is just seven goals away from breaking the Army career mark, which has stood for 35 years. Army and Colgate meet on March 31 in Hamilton, N.Y.

EARLY BIRD SPECIALThis 2013 season opener matched last season as the earliest Army has ever began a season in its 96-year history. Army has only played in 16 February games overall. The Black Knights, Bucknell, Navy, Colgate and Lehigh all rang in the 2013 season with games that same weekend. Navy and Bucknell will lift the lid on the Patriot League season this Saturday, as they do battle in Lewisburg, Pa., at 1 p.m.

ARMY ON THE BIG STAGEArmy is no stranger to playing on a large stage like it will on Saturday at Sun Life Stadium. The Black Knights routinely play in big stadiums, including its own Michie Stadium with a capacity of 38,000. In terms of playing in professional football venues, Army has experience playing in M&T Bank Stadium (Baltimore, Md.) twice in head coach Joe Alberici’s tenure. Both contests were a part of the Smartlink Day of Rivals and featured the annual Army-Navy showdowns in 2009 and 2010. M&T Bank Stadium is the home of the Super Bowl XLVII champion Baltimore Ravens, while Sun Life Stadium is the home of the Miami Dolphins and hosted the 2013 BCS National Championship.

2013 ARMY LACROSSE GAME NOTES

#18/18 SYRACUSE 6

ARMY 2

LAST TIME OUT - FEB. 24, 2013

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Somers stood tall with a career-high 18 saves, but the Army lacrosse team did not have an answer on the offensive end in a 6-2 loss at #18 Syracuse on Sunday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. Sophomore attackman John Glesener and junior middie Tyler Kamide accounted for the Black Knights’ goals, but the Orange defense held the rest of the team in check all afternoon en route its fi rst win of the season. Both of Army’s goals came in the second quarter, but Syracuse netted three of the fi nal four goals of the game to secure the win. Senior midfi elder Pat Brennan assisted on Kamide’s score to round out the Black Knights’ point production. Syracuse (1-1) outshot Army (2-2) 44-25 and snagged 34 ground balls to the Black Knights’ 21. Each team won six face-offs. Somers scattered 18 saves – the most made by an Army player since Tom Palesky ’11 – throughout the contest. The Wilton, Conn., native turned away seven shots in the second quarter.

For a complete game recap, see page 17. GAME NOTES: Garrett Thul had the honor of carrying the traditional American fl ag out of the Carrier Dome tunnel … he later saw the nation’s longest goal-scoring streak end at 42 games … Thul was held scoreless for just the second time in his career … Army’s six goals allowed are the fewest it has yielded this season … the teams combined for 25 turnovers (13 Army, 12 Syracuse) … Army played in front of a season-high 3,614 spectators … Alex Daly took all 12 face-offs on the day … senior defenseman Brendan Buckley caused a team-high two turnovers and tallied four ground balls.

BOX SCORE

BLACK KNIGHTS IN THE PROSIn total, Army has had nine players drafted to the Major League Lacrosse ranks and one to the National Lacrosse League. Professional front offi ces cannot speak to the athletes until they have exhausted their eligibility at the end of the season. Draftees may select to use leave time in order to participate and it is handled on a case-by-case basis. The players’ military commitment takes the ultimate precedence. Garrett Thul (2013), Brendan Buckley (2013), Tim Henderson (2012), Jeremy Boltus (2011), Bill Henderson (2011), Tom Palesky (2011), Adam Fullerton (2008), Jim Wagner (2005), Jeff Bryan (2004) and Tim Pearson (2002) were all drafted by the MLL. Boltus enjoyed the most MLL success of any Army graduate, being named the league’s Rookie of the Year in 2012. Tim Henderson is the only player to play professionally in both the MLL and NLL. He is currently playing an integral role on the Washington Stealth’s roster while remaining on active duty in the U.S. Army.

OH CAPTAIN(S), MY CAPTAIN(S)Seniors Andrew Boyd, Brendan Buckley and Garrett Thul were selected to serve as team tri-captains for the 2013 season. Buckley and Thul are both preseason All-America selections and returning All-Patriot League players, while Boyd started 13 games and scored a career-best 15 points in 2012.

GLESENER GETS IT DONESophomore John Glesener, who moved from the midfi eld to Army’s attack this season, has proven that shift to be a brilliant one thus far in 2013. Glesener posted his second career hat trick in the Black Knights’ opener at No. 12 UMass on Feb. 10 and is second on the team with 14 points (6G, 8A). The Camillus, N.Y., native returns as Army’s second-leading scorer from a year ago, having tallied 33 points (16G, 17A) as a freshman.

YOUNG GUNSLeadership is inherent at West Point, and this season’s roster will rely heavily on nine seniors to serve as the example for a young roster. The Black Knights’ list 16 rookies and 14 sophomores, making up the fi fth-youngest roster in the nation with 30 underclassmen. Those ranked above Army include Delaware (33), Holy Cross (33), Syracuse (32) and Air Force (31). Maryland ties Army with 30 underclassmen on its 2013 ledger. Plenty of rookies have been thrown into the fi re over the fi rst three games, and several have stepped up to the challenge. Attackman Connor Cook has started all four games as the Black Knights’ third attackman and scored at least one point in three of those contests. Also impressive in the early going, middie Alex Daly has taken the majority of Army’s face-offs and is 27-of-52 in the “x.”

HURRY UP OFFENSEArmy scored off the opening face-off twice last season and did so again in its 2013 season opener at UMass on Feb. 10. Freshman midfi elder Alex Daly won the opening face-off against the Minutemen and quickly fed sophomore attackman John Glesener for the score with 14:54 on the clock. The goal tied Army’s record for the fastest goal to start a game, matching Chad Allen’s goal six seconds into the Army-Navy game on April 6, 1991.

SCRIMMAGE SETTINGArmy held its fi rst offi cial practice on Sunday, Jan. 6, just over a month before its 2013 season opener (Feb. 9 at UMass). Over the fi nal two weeks of the preseason, the Black Knights hosted Penn State and Fairfi eld for scrimmage sessions. Both teams were ranked amongst the nation’s preseason top-20 in both national polls. Army hosted St. John’s and Harvard for a fall scrimmage day in October.

POLLING STATIONSAlong with receiving votes in the 2013 Preseason USILA Coaches’ Poll, the Army lacrosse team was tabbed third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. Coming off a 7-8 season during which they made a seventh-straight Patriot League Tournament appearance under head coach Joe Alberici, the Black Knights garnered 48 points to land third in the preseason poll. With 69 points and nine fi rst-place votes, Lehigh is predicted to defend its Patriot League title. Colgate followed in second place with 65 points and the remaining fi ve fi rst-place votes. Following Army in order are Bucknell (43 points), Navy (35), Holy Cross (20) and Lafayette (14). The poll is determined by votes of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.

PRESEASON PLAUDITSA trio of Black Knights have already garnered plenty of attention before the 2013 season even got under way. Seniors Garrett Thul and Brendan Buckley, along with sophomore John Glesener, earned a spot on the inaugural Preseason All-Patriot League Team in late January. In addition, all three grabbed Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-America plaudits. Thul and Glesener earned second and third team honors, respectively, while Buckley was tabbed with honorable mention status.

BEST OF THE BESTGetting accepted to West Point is a challenge in itself. A look at the freshman Class of 2016 shows that 15,170 candidates applied, 4,284 were nominated, 2,554 qualifi ed and 1,193 were admitted. Of those admitted, 72 percent were in the top-fi ve of their high school class, eight percent were valedictorians, 90 percent played

2013 ARMY LACROSSE GAME NOTES

NATIONAL PRIDE Senior attackman Garrett Thul continues to be one of the NCAA’s premier goal scorers, as evidenced by the national lists below. In addition, Army’s 2013 roster is among the youngest in the country with a combined 30 freshmen and sophomores.

varsity sports, 57 percent served as team captain and 18 percent were either class or student body presidents.

ONE-TWO PUNCHWhile Army said goodbye to a valuable Class of 2012 in May, the team returned its top two point-producers from a year ago this season. Senior Garrett Thul and sophomore John Glesener totaled 43 and 33 points, respectively, in 2012. Thul’s 39 goals led the team, as did Glesener’s 17 assists. The pair have combined for 28 points (18G, 10A) so far in 2013 and remain the team’s top two scoring threats.

AGAINST THE BESTArmy wasted no time cracking into its long list of nationally ranked opponents in the early going. The team opened at No. 5/7 UMass on Feb. 10 and met No. 18/18 Syracuse two weeks later. The Black Knights will go up against fi ve opponents currently ranked in the top 20 of both national polls. Of those contests, two are of the non-conference variety and also includes perennial powerhouse and current No. 3/3 Johns Hopkins on May 3.

EPP-IC THOUGHTSJunior long stick midfi elder Kevin Epp began giving Army fans an inside look at the 2013 team with his blog, “Epp-ic Thoughts,” at the start of the season. A native of Naperville, Ill., Epp will continue his weekly blog throughout the 2013 campaign. Topics covered thus far include the team’s lunch box tradition, player nicknames, road trip roommates, bus activities and lunch table dynamics.

NOTABLE NUMBER CHANGESSeveral Army players opted to change uniform numbers this season. Perhaps one of the most noticeable will be preseason All-Patriot League sophomore John Glesener, who changed from No. 40 to No. 21 for 2013. Fans will remember former All-America long stick midfi elder Tim Henderson ’12 owning No. 21 for the previous four seasons. Also making a switch is sophomore goalkeeper Sam Somers, who went from No. 42 to No. 2, which was previously worn by All-American and Tewaaraton Award fi nalist Jeremy Boltus ’10.

BETWEEN THE PIPESHead coach Joe Alberici faces a new challenge as the 2013 season gets under way -- that of tabbing a starting goalkeeper. Army had a tradition of churning out All-American keepers during Alberici’s fi rst six seasons, including Adam Fullerton ’08 and Tom Palesky ’10. Last year, a fairly inexperienced Zach Palmieri ’12, who is currently serving as the team’s athletic intern, stepped in and started all 15 games. This season’s starting goalkeeper position remains up for grabs. Leading the pack of contenders thus far are sophomore Sam Somers and junior Bobby Sincero, each of whom have earned starting nods in 2013. Somers has made three starts and is coming off a stellar performance at nationally ranked Syracuse on Sunday afternoon. He played all 60 minutes, made a career-high 18 saves and was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week. Sincero earned his only start in a 14-8 win over Manhattan on Feb. 13 and has played 129 minutes in the cage. The pair combined for just 47 minutes of work last season. Senior Evan Danahy and junior Zeric Butters provide two additional options for Alberici and his staff.

A GENTLEMAN AND A SCHOLARSenior close defenseman Brendan Buckley returns as the Black Knights stopper and tri-captain, but his accomplishments over the last four season stretch far beyond the fi eld. Not only was he a fi rst team All-Patriot League performer last spring, he was named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and later the conference’s overall male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A fi rst team Academic All-American, Buckley posted a 4.0 grade-point average in the fall semester and carries a 3.987 cumulative GPA to rank 18th in his Firstie class of 1,079 cadets. A native

of Massapequa, N.Y., Buckley was a preseason All-Patriot League pick and earned preseason All-America honorable mention plaudits. He was recently selected as one of 20 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, which will be presented to one NCAA Division I lacrosse player who embodies the true student-athlete.

OLD GLORYIt is tradition for an Army player to lead the team onto the fi eld before every game carrying the American Flag. Since a meeting with Cornell on March 6, 2010, the Black Knights have been using a special one, sent directly from the battlefi elds of Afghanistan. Former Army lacrosse midfi elder and 2006 graduate CPT Jon Burton served with the 1st Battalion, 1-17th Infantry Regiment, 5-2 Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division in the Arghandab Valley district of Kandahar Province in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where some of the heaviest fi ghting of the war took place. He mailed the fl ag, which was carried on a patrol in honor of the 2010 Army lacrosse team to head coach Joe Alberici “in hopes you could have the team run onto the fi eld with it to honor those soldiers from the 1-17th who made the ultimate sacrifi ce for everything this fl ag represents. Tell the men they represent more than just the Black, Gold and Gray - they represent everyone who is fi ghting under the Red, White and Blue.”

IN KEEPING WITH TRADITIONArmy lacrosse is a program steeped in tradition and this year’s team is no different. Along with a handful of other team traditions, here are a couple of note ...

• MAY I QUOTE YOU ON THAT? - Army starts every practice with a quote, read by a “quote private.” The quote private is a freshman on the team whose job is to come up with and memorize a motivational quote of the day and read it before each and every practice. The tradition dates back to Nick Bilotta (West Point ’02), who started the quote private as a plebe in 1998 and now serves as one of the team’s offi cer representatives. The 2013 quote private is freshman middie Luke Poulos.

• OUT TO LUNCH - Whether it’s during a game or simply at practice, an old-fashioned tin lunch box can be found on the sidelines. A tradition started by head coach Joe Alberici in 2008, the lunch box symbolizes hard work and blue-collar toughness and the coaching staff uses it as a reward. Each week, the player whom the coaching staff deems “practice player of the week” will have his number displayed on the outside of the lunch box as a symbol for a job well done that week. The “keeper of the lunch box” is determined at the start of the year by the player who owned the post previously. The fi rst lunch box keeper was Bill Henderson in 2008. Tom Dalton followed in ‘09, Brendan Buckley in ‘10, John Burk in ’11 and Billy Baird ’12. This years’ lunch box keeper is freshman attackman Will Mazzone. Mazzone is the fi rst non-defensive player to guard the lunch box since its inception in 2008.

FOR THE RECORD

FAMILY TIESArmy fans may recognize a familiar name when looking down the Black Knights’ 2013 roster, as freshman Luke Poulos begins his fi rst season in the black, gold and gray. Poulos is the younger brother of Matt Poulos ’10, who lettered four years at West Point and was a member of Army’s 2010 Patriot League Championship team. The elder Poulos won both face-offs attempted in the Black Knights’ iconic fi rst round NCAA win at then-two-time defending national champion Syracuse. The younger Poulos scored his fi rst collegiate point, assisting senior attackman Garrett Thul on a goal in the Black Knights’ 14-8 win over VMI on Feb. 16.

FOLLOWING THE LEADERFans won’t miss a minute of Army lacrosse action if they take the lead and follow @Army_Lacrosse on Twitter, a feed that provides in-game score updates, links to feature stories and more. In addition, fans can follow head coach Joe Alberici at the handle @ArmyLaxCoach.

A LOOK BACK AT 2012Head coach Joe Alberici guided Army to its seventh Patriot League Tournament under his watch in 2012. The team fi nished the year with a 7-8 record in a season that saw the Black Knights face seven nationally ranked opponents and reach No. 20 themselves. Army’s 6-5 overtime win at then-No. 15 Bucknell halted the Bison’s eight-game win streak. While the victory in Lewisburg, Pa., provided plenty of highlights, the apex of Army’s season came courtesy of a 9-6 win over rival Navy on national television to clinch a Patriot League Tournament berth. It was the Black Knights’ unprecedented fourth-straight win in the series. Army yielded fi ve All-Patriot League players - Tim Henderson (fi rst team), Garrett Thul (fi rst team), Brendan Buckley (fi rst team), Devin Lynch (fi rst team) and Derek Sipperly (second team). In addition, Thul and Henderson, who was also the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, garnered All-America honors. Buckley went on to nab fi rst team Academic All-America honors to go with his Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year citation.

ARMY ON T.V.Army lacrosse fans around the country will have the opportunity to watch the Black Knights on national television at least three times this spring. Thanks to an extensive Patriot League television package, the highly anticipated 96th meeting between Army and Navy, the Black Knights’ visit to Colgate and Army’s regular-season home fi nale against perennial powerhouse Johns Hopkins will air live on CBS Sports Network. In addition, the 2013 Patriot League Lacrosse Tournament will be carried by CBSSN in its entirety. Army will also have several games broadcast to regional television audiences. Those games include Syracuse (Time Warner Cable) and Michigan (Sun Sports).

TICKET TIMESeason tickets start at just $19 for youth, students and senior citizens. An adult season ticket can be purchased for $25. Single-game tickets are $4 for youth, students, senior citizens and groups of 10 or more, while adults can be purchased for $6. Prices increase to $6 and $10 for the same contingents, respectively, for the May 3 meeting with Johns Hopkins.

MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENDANCE, PLEASE?It’s no secret that lacrosse is fastest growing sport among youth in the United States. That was highly evident last season with an increased interest in Army lacrosse. The Black Knights ranked as high as fi fth in the nation in attendance last spring and fi nished the year second amongst Patriot League schools with an average of 2,293 fans per home game.

ON DECKArmy completes a three-game road swing next Saturday, March 9, at Rutgers. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. in Piscataway, N.J. The Black Knights own a 56-18-1 lead in the all-time series and have won fi ve-straight games against the Scarlet Knights.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CADET

ABOUT THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY Since its founding two centuries ago, the United States Military Academy has accomplished its mission by developing cadets in four critical areas: intellectual, physical, military, and moral-ethical - a four-year process called the “West Point Experience.” Specifi c developmental goals are addressed through several fully coordinated and integrated programs. A challenging Academic Program that consists of a core of 31 courses provides a balanced education in the arts and sciences. This core curriculum establishes the foundation for elective courses that permit cadets to explore in greater depth a fi eld of study or an optional major. All cadets receive a Bachelor of Science degree, which is designed specifi cally to meet the intellectual requirements of a commissioned offi cer in today’s Army.

The Physical Program at West Point includes both physical education classes and competitive athletics. Every cadet participates in an intercollegiate, club or intramural level sport each semester. This rigorous physical program contributes to the mental and physical fi tness that is required for service as an offi cer in the Army. Cadets learn basic military skills, including leadership, through a demanding Military Program which begins on their fi rst day at West Point. Most military training takes place during the summer, with new cadets undergoing Cadet Basic Training - or Beast Barracks - the fi rst year, followed by Cadet Field Training at nearby Camp Buckner the second year. Cadets spend their third and fourth summers serving in active Army units around the world; attending advanced training courses such as airborne, air assault or northern warfare; or training the fi rst and second year cadets as members of the leadership cadre. Military training is combined with military science instruction to provide a solid military foundation for offi cership. Moral-ethical development occurs throughout the formal programs as well as a host of activities and experiences available at the Military Academy. These include formal instruction in the important values of the military profession, voluntary religious programs, interaction with staff and faculty role models, and a vigorous guest speaker program. The foundation of the ethical code at West Point is found in the Academy’s motto, “Duty, Honor, Country.” Cadets also develop ethically by adhering to the Cadet Honor Code, which states “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.” Admission is open to all young men and women, and is extremely competitive. Candidates must receive a nomination from a member of Congress or from the Department of the Army. They are then evaluated on their academic, physical and leadership potential. Those candidates who are fully qualifi ed receive appointments to the Academy.

2013 ARMY LACROSSE GAME NOTES

HEAD COACH JOE ALBERICI8th SEASON AT ARMY9th SEASON AS COLLEGIATE HEAD COACHALFRED UNIVERSITY, 1991 @ArmyLaxCoach

Joe Alberici enters his eighth season at the helm of the Army lacrosse program. Following in the footsteps of some of the biggest names in the history of the sport, Alberici roams the same sideline where Hall of Fame legends such as Jack Emmer, Ace Adams, Dick Edell and F. Morris Touchstone, once tread. A former assistant to Emmer, Alberici returned to the banks of the Hudson River after a nine-year stint as an assistant coach at Duke where he helped the Blue Devils tighten their grip as one of the nation’s premier lacrosse programs. Alberici became the 10th head coach in Army’s storied 90-year history in 2006, and was tasked to fi ll the big shoes left by his mentor, Emmer, who retired as college lacrosse’s all-time winningest coach in 2005. Alberici led Army to its fi rst-ever Patriot League tournament title in 2010, defeating Navy, 11-8, in the championship contest. The Black Knights, who compiled a 6-0 conference record during the regular season for the fi rst time that spring, went on to upset No. 2-ranked Syracuse in the fi rst round of the NCAA tournament. Alberici helped mold Garrett Thul into the national Rookie of the Year in 2010 as the attackman set plebe records in goals and points. One of Alberici’s marquee recruits, Thul has gone on to earn All-America honors twice and will serve as a tri-captain during his fi nal season the banks of the Hudson. When it comes to Alberici producing successful cadet-athletes both on the fi eld and in the classroom, the numbers speak for themselves. In just seven short years at the Academy, his players have earned a total of 13 All-American certifi cates. Alberici has also mentored seven Patriot League major award winners (Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year, Rookie of the Year), 32 Patriot League Honor Roll recipients, four Academic All-Americans, three Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year and one Lowes Senior CLASS Award winner (Andrew Maisano, 2010). In addition, seven of his players have been selected in the Major League Lacrosse draft. Last spring, the well-respected Alberici took a young Black Knights group to its seventh Patriot League Tournament under his watch. Army defeated Navy in front of 10,192 fans at Michie Stadium, which was not surprising due to the growing interest in Army lacrosse in Alberici’s time on the

sidelines. Last season, Army ranked as high as fi fth in the nation, averaging more than 2,300 fans per home contest. Tim Henderson ‘12 garnered Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honors following his fi nal season. He went on to help the Long Island Lizards make a run in the MLL playoffs and joined Thul in earning All-America honors in 2012. Henderson and Thul headlined a group of fi ve Black Knights to capture 2012 All-Patriot League honors. Following Army’s Patriot League Tournament appearance, Alberici served as the North Team head coach at the annual USILA/Lax World North-South Senior All-Star game where he mentored Henderson, Devin Lynch ‘12 and Larry LoRusso ‘12 one last time. Alberici’s emphasis on molding the true student-athlete was never more evident than in 2012. Seven players earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll plaudits, while James MacGibbon ‘12 and current senior captains Brendan Buckley and Andrew Boyd were all selected to the Patriot League’s All-Academic Team. Buckley, the 2012 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, went on to become the third Army lacrosse player to nab fi rst team Academic All-America honors. He was later lauded as the overall Patriot League Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year, along with being a fi rst team all-league defenseman. In 2011, Alberici recorded his 50th victory at Army and mentored one of the most prolifi c feeders in the program’s storied history. Jeremy Boltus ’11 fi nished second on Army’s all-time points (214) and assists (124) lists. The team captain became the second player in Army history to be one of fi ve national fi nalists for the Tewaaraton Award, presented annually to the top player in college lacrosse, and the fi rst Black Knight since 2005 to be named fi rst team All-America. Boltus went on to enjoy a breakout campaign with the MLL’s Hamilton Nationals. He led all rookies in scoring and later nabbed MLL Rookie of the Year accolades. With the tandem of Thul and Boltus fi ring on all cylinders, Alberici’s sixth season at the helm saw the Black Knights defeat rival Navy at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for the fi rst time since 1997. The 14-9 comeback victory marked a third straight win over the Mids and fourth victory for the Class of 2011. Army, nationally ranked at the time, also clinched a Patriot League Tournament berth that afternoon and effectively eliminated Navy from the four-team playoff for the fi rst time in conference history. Army went on to fi nish the season with a 9-6 overall mark and ranked as high as No. 7 in the country. The Black Knights totaled fi ve All-America certifi cates, three MLL draftees and produced a second team Academic All-America honoree. Alberici was named the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year after leading

Army to a 9-6 record, including a 5-1 conference mark which was good enough to clinch the Patriot League regular season title and top seed for the postseason tournament, hosted at Michie Stadium. Five Black Knights garnered All-Patriot League honors, including senior Adam Fullerton `08, who won his second-straight conference Goalkeeper of the Year award on his way to third-team All-America honors. Ranked as high as No. 8 during the season, Army fi nished the season No. 19 in the fi nal USILA National Coaches Poll on the heels of a scoring defense that only allowed 7.13 goals per game, to rank sixth nationally. In 2007, Alberici guided the Black Knights through a roller coaster season, highlighted by a 6-1 start and an upset of No. 2 Syracuse in the Carrier Dome that marked the fi rst time the Orange had ever lost at home in February.

2013 ARMY LACROSSE GAME NOTES

Ranked as high as No. 8 in the national polls during the campaign, the Black Knights would go on to qualify for their third-straight Patriot League Tournament to fi nish the season. His stalwart defense allowed just four opponents to score over 10 goals en route to a 7.80 goals against average that ranked 10th in the country. Alberici also watched four of his players garner all-conference honors. In his fi rst season as head coach, Alberici led the Black Knights to their second-straight appearance in the Patriot League Tournament Championship game. Two of his players - attackman John Walker `06 and defenseman Matt Luyster `06 - capped their Army careers with Honorable Mention All-America honors while leading the squad to its ninth-straight season with at least eight victories against one of the toughest schedules in the country. Alberici’s tenure at Duke coincided with the Blue Devils’ rise to national prominence, which culminated in their magical run to the Division I title contest in 2005, a game in which they fell 9-8 to top-ranked Johns Hopkins. Ranked second in the nation behind the Blue Jays for much of the spring, Duke forged a remarkable 17-3 ledger and established an NCAA record for victories in a single season. Two of Duke’s losses were one-goal defeats at the hands of Johns Hopkins, including an 11-10 double-overtime loss at JHU’s Homewood Field in early April. Alberici’s duties at Duke included recruiting director, assisting with the daily administration of the program, serving as the Blue Devils’ defensive coordinator and coaching the team’s goalkeepers. After serving as offensive coordinator and working with Duke’s man-up offense during his fi rst eight years, he assumed the roles of defensive coordinator and coach of the man-down defense during his fi nal season. He was promoted to associate head coach in 1999. During Alberici’s nine years on head coach Mike Pressler’s staff, the Blue Devils forged a sparkling 96-47 (.671) record, made seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament - including a run of six-straight postseason trips between 1997 and 2002 - and captured a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference titles (2001 and 2002). The Blue Devils reached the Final Four for the fi rst time in 1997, Alberici’s initial year in Durham, before embarking on their remarkable postseason run in 2005. Under Alberici’s watchful eye, Duke ranked second in the nation in scoring defense, surrendering just 6.91 goals per game. Alberici spent the 1995 and 1996 seasons at West Point as an assistant coach, and helped the Black Knights to a 10-5 showing and an NCAA appearance in 1996. Army won its fi nal fi ve games that season, including victories over Hofstra, Navy and Rutgers, to earn the Academy’s 12th postseason berth. A 1991 graduate of Alfred University, Alberici was a two-time lacrosse All-American in 1990 and 1991 and also garnered Academic All-America accolades as a senior. A four-year starter at attack, he set six school scoring records and led the Saxons to winning seasons in 1989, 1990 and 1991. A three-time team captain, Alberici led the entire nation, including all three divisions, in assists as a junior, garnering 78 helpers in 17 contests for a 4.6 assist per-game average. In 2001, Alberici was inducted into Alfred’s Hall of Fame. Following graduation, Alberici remained at his alma mater for two years in the role of graduate assistant coach, earning his master’s degree in education in 1993. He accepted his fi rst head coaching assignment soon thereafter when he was named to the top post at SUNY Oneonta. In 1994, the Dragons forged an 8-6 record and established a single-season school record for victories, earning Alberici Empire Lacrosse League Coach of the Year laurels. It was on the heels of that spectacular season that Alberici made the move to West Point. A native of Auburn, N.Y., Alberici was inducted into the Auburn High School Hall of Fame in 2008, joining his older brother, John and father, Gino, as enshrinees. In his present role as the face of Army’s storied program, Alberici has assumed control of a club that remains intertwined with the rich history of collegiate lacrosse. In 95 seasons, the Black Knights have amassed 732 victories, trailing only Johns Hopkins, Syracuse and Navy in all-time wins at the Division I level. Army has produced eight national champions, while 12 men associated with the program (eight players and four coaches) have been enshrined in the National Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame. Alberici served a term as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Lacrosse Team at the 2010 World Lacrosse Championships in Manchester, England, helping the Americans to the gold medal. In 2007, he was also appointed to the United

States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Board of Directors, the sport’s national governing body. Alberici and his wife, Petra, reside at West Point with their son, Maximus, and daughter, Isabella.

“There is no better institution in the country to get an education, to learn about leadership, or to learn about yourself than West Point. It is the kind of place that, if you choose to come here, you’ll be different when you leave. Certainly, there will be challenges, but you will have the strength of your teammates, your coaches and all those around you for support. If you are willing to meet those challenges head-on, you’ll be a better person for it. I’m not sure there is a nobler thing than to serve your country. It says a lot about who you are.”

2013 ARMY LACROSSE GAME NOTES

GAME 1 - FEB. 10 #12/13 UMASS 16, ARMY 9

AMHERST, Mass. - Six different players scored goals, including sophomore attackman John Glesener’s second career hat trick, but turnovers and clearing struggles plagued the Army lacrosse team in a 16-9 loss at No. 12/13 Massachusetts. In a game delayed one day due to severe winter storm implications, neither team led by more than one goal over the fi rst quarter of the game. The Minutemen used a 12-5 run over the fi nal three quarters to put the game away. Glesener’s hat trick highlighted a fi ve-point day for the Central New York native, as he added a team-high two assists in a standout effort. Covered tightly all afternoon by UMass’ Jake Smith, senior attackman Garrett Thul managed two points (1G, 1A), while senior midfi elder Alex Van Krevel added a pair of second-half goals. Senior Pat Brennan added a single goal as well. Making their fi rst career starts, sophomore middie Alex Newsome and freshman attackman Connor Cook scored single goals in the setback. UMass’ Matt Whippen paced the Minutemen with six points (5G, 1A). The Black Knights held senior All-American attackman Will Manny to just one goal on the afternoon. Fourteen of the Minutemen’s 16 goals were scored out of the midfi eld. The Minutemen rode Army all day long, creating a disruption in the clearing game that saw the Black Knights go 9-of-14. UMass also held a 23-16 advantage in ground balls and outshot Army 47-30. Both teams relied on new starting goalkeepers for the 2013 lid lifter. For the Black Knights, sophomore Sam Somers got the early call before junior Bobby Sincero entered the contest midway through the second quarter. Sincero made eight saves in just under 41 minutes of work. UMass’ Zachary Oliveri made seven stops and played all but the fi nal two minutes.

Game Notes: Sunday’s opener matched last year for the earliest start in the program’s 96-year history ... UMass leads the all-time series 13-9 ... Garrett Thul extended the longest goal-scoring streak in the nation to 40 games ... he also tallied his 17th career assist ... junior close defenseman John Burk earned his fi rst career start on Sunday ... eight freshman drew their fi rst collegiate playing time ... amongst that group was Alex Daly, who went 9-of-18 in the face-off “x” ... the teams combined for 15 penalties (Army - eight; UMass - seven) on the day ... Daley and sophomore long stick midfi elder Jimbo D’Aprile paced Army with four and three ground balls, respectively ... freshman midfi elder Mike Perettine scored his fi rst collegiate point on a third-quarter assist.

GAME 2 - FEB. 13 ARMY 14, MANHATTAN 8

WEST POINT, N.Y. - In the fi rst meeting between the two programs, Army’s offense clicked on all cylinders and handed visiting Manhattan a 14-8 loss in the Black Knights’ home opener Wednesday afternoon at Michie Stadium. Senior attackman Garrett Thul registered his 24th career hat trick, while sophomores Alex Newsome and John Glesener added fi ve points each. Coming off a tough loss at No. 12 UMass on Sunday, the Black Knights showed no signs of hangover in their fi rst victory of 2013. Thul’s four goals led all players and extended the nation’s longest goal-scoring streak to 41 games. Newsome’s breakout performance included his fi rst career hat trick (3G, 2A), and Glesener turned in his second standout effort of the season with two goals and as many assists. In addition, freshman attackman Connor Cook totaled a career-high three points (2G, 1A) to highlight a host of contributing youngsters. GAME 3 - FEB. 16 ARMY 14, VMI 8

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Three days later and it was the same result for the Army lacrosse team - a 14-8 victory. The story Saturday, however, was senior attackman Garrett Thul exploding for a career-high seven goals and sophomore attackman Alex Newsome (six points) continuing his standout play. Thul added an assist to fi nish with a career-best eight points in a monster offensive effort. Thul and Newsome combined for 11 of 14 goals for Army (2-1), which remained a perfect 5-0 against VMI (0-2). Seniors Alex Van Krevel, Andrew Boyd and Matt Mezer each tallied single goals. Sophomore attackman John Glesener added a game-high three assists. Statistically, Army dominated the Keydets, outshooting them 60-18 and owning a 50-31 advantage on ground balls. Thanks in large part to a stellar riding effort, Army’s attack combined for seven caused turnovers. Freshman attackman Connor Cook totaled three alone to lead the team. VMI’s face-off unit, coupled with a 33 of the Black Knights’ 60 shots being on cage, heated up in the second half and helped keep the score from getting out of hand. Mezer, who scored his fi rst career goal six seconds into the second quarter, keyed the Black Knights in winning 16-of-25 face-offs. Army was also 21-of-22 on clears and scored on three of six on extra-man opportunities. After a relatively quiet fi rst half, during which he still managed to tally a pair of goals, Thul caught fi re with fi ve second-half goals - three of which came in the fi nal 7:34 of the game. Army, which led 6-4 at the half, gave up back-to-back VMI goals to close the third quarter. The spurt pulled the Keydets within 9-7 heading into the fi nal 15 minutes. It was then that Thul and the Black Knights out-scored VMI 5-1 to put the exclamation point on its second win of the season.

Game Notes: Army honored the memory of 1LT Chase Prasnicki, a former Black Knight football player and 2010 West Point graduate who was killed in Afghanistan in June, prior to the game ... Chase’s younger brother plays for VMI ... the boys’ mother, Debbie Arthur, was on hand, along with head football coach Rich Ellerson, Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan and head lacrosse offi cer representative COL Rick McPeak ... Army donned its gray jerseys, which it only does against other service academies, in a nod to the Long Gray Line ... Garrett Thul extended the nation’s longest goal-scoring streak to 42 games ... he now has 134 goals, which is just six off the Academy career mark (Scott Finlay ‘78 has 140) ... sophomore Sam Somers started the game in goal, while junior Bobby Sincero played most of the second half ... senior Evan Danahy drew his fi rst minutes of the season, playing the fi nal 1:42.

2013 ARMY LACROSSE GAME NOTES

ARMY GAME-BY-GAME

GAME 4 - FEB. 24#18/18 SYRACUSE 6, ARMY 2

Somers scattered 18 saves – the most made by an Army player since Tom Palesky ’11 – throughout the contest. The Wilton, Conn., native turned away seven shots in the second quarter. A defensive struggle from the opening face-off, the Orange drew fi rst blood Billy Ward went low to beat Somers at the 4:24 mark. The Black Knights looked to level the score with a long possession not long after, but were unsuccessful in four shots shots down the stretch. The 1-0 lead held at the end of the fi rst frame. After Army successfully killed a Syracuse man-up chance early in the second quarter, the Orange took advantage later on the same possession, pushing its lead to 2-0 with a Scott Loy goal at the 11:42 mark. Syracuse won the ensuing face-off and scored again less than two minutes later as Luke Cometti score at 10:09 put them on top, 3-0. The Black Knights cashed in on its fi rst lengthy possession of the quarter as Brennan fed Kamide, playing in front of a hometown crowd, for a tricky behind-the-back score at the 8:15 mark. Syracuse quickly stole the momentum back with back-to-back goals over the next four minutes to match its largest lead of the game, 5-1. Glesener found himself in space and ripped an eight-yard lazer with just under four minutes left in the half, pulling the Black Knights within 5-2 with 3:53 on the clock. Somers stood tall in the goal throughout the opening 30 minutes of action, registering eight fi rst-half saves. Freshman midfi elder Alex Daly won the opening face-off of the second half, resulting in two quality shots over the fi rst two minutes for the Black Knights. Neither got through, however, and Syracuse took advantage of an EMO opportunity on its next possession and pushed its lead to 6-2 with 9:57 remaining in the quarter. The teams played back-and-forth the rest of the way, as the score remained 6-2 at the end of the frame. Army registered six shots in the fourth quarter, including sophomore Alex Newsome bouncing one off the post at 9:15, but could not punch the ball through. Syracuse came up empty on nine fourth-quarter shots to provide the fi nal 6-2 decision.

Game Notes: Garrett Thul saw the nation’s longest goal-scoring streak end at 42 games … Thul was held scoreless for just the second time in his career … Army’s six goals allowed are the fewest it has yielded this season.
