    Firearm Safety

    The responsibility for safe handling and storagegoes hand in hand with gun ownership. Neverlose sight of the fact that your firearm arepotentially lethal and can kill someone if

    handled improperly. Along with these generalsafety guidelines always ensure that you readyour firearm's instruction manual and acquaintyourself with its proper use and care. Firearm

    safety depends on you.

    SAFETY IS CRUCIAL

    Shooting accidents are often caused bycareless oversights such as failing to control thedirection of your muzzle, failing to fully engagethe safety, leaving ammunition in the chamber,or using improper ammunition. Theseoversights can result in the destruction of life,limb or property. There's no calling back a bullet

    once it's been fired, so it's critical that you knowthe principles of safe gun handling and storagebefore you use your firearm.

    SAFETY IS CRUCIALNot all firearms are the same. That means thefirst step in safe handling is to learn the featuresand requirements of your particular gun.

    The Rules of Firearm Safety should be etchedin your mind forever. Let them govern youractions wherever and whenever you're involvedwith firearms: Outdoors; On the range; Or in

    your home/place of work.

    Shooting safely: Dos & DontsNEVER POINT A GUN, LOADED OR UNLOADED, IN AN

    UNSAFE DIRECTION.

    Never shoot unless you are sure it is safe to do so.

    Always have the safety catch on safe until the moment beforeyou fire.

    Always bear in mind the possibility of a ricochet, particularly

    across water or off branches and vegetation.

    Never load a shotgun unless you are expecting a shot.

    Never travel with a loaded shotgun.

    You are responsible for the security of gun in your possession at

    all times.

    Shooting safely: Dos & Donts Never put down a loaded shotgun or leave it

    unattended.

    Never touch the triggers until you want to fire. Never attempt to shoot unless you are steady on your

    feet.

    Never keep a dog attached to yourself while shooting, itmay pull you off balance.

    Never shoot unless you are certain of your target andcan see it clearly.

    Never shoot at, or near, overhead power lines orinsulators.

    When not in use, gun must be stored securely. When in use, reasonable precautions must be taken for

    their safe custody

    Always clean and dry your shotgun after use. Never put

    a damp gun into a steel cabinet. If a fault develops, have it rectified before using the gun

    again.

    Never use a gun with badly dented or pitted barrels.Have your gun serviced regularly by a competent

    gunsmith

    Safety is mainly commonsense and a littleeducation, make sure you are 100% aware ofsafety every time you pick up your gun.Most accidents are caused by carelessnessor ignorance, the onus to handle and use aweapon safely lies squarely on theshoulders of the gunman. "Basic" safety

    rules are outlined below.

    Gun Safety Rules

    You never fool around or play with guns. Gunsare dangerous when they are not handled orused properly and can easily injure or kill you,

    and those around you. There are no secondchances with a gun and the rules for safe gunhandling must always be followed to avoidaccidents

    The Golden rules for Safe GunHandling1. Always treat the gun as loaded.2. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe

    direction.

    3. Always keep your finger straight and off thetrigger until you are ready to shoot.

    4. Always keep the gun unloaded until you areready to use it.

    5. Never point the gun at anything you don'tintend to destroy.

    6. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

    The Golden rules for Safe GunHandling7. Learn the mechanical and handling characteristics of

    the gun you are using.8. Always use proper Ammunition.9. Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before

    loading and shooting.10. If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, hold

    your shooting position for several seconds; then withthe muzzle pointed in a safe direction, carefully unloadthe gun.

    11. Don't rely on the gun's safety to keep it from firing.12. Be aware of your surroundings when handling guns so

    you don't trip or lose your balance and accidentallypoint and/or fire the gun at anyone or anything

    Always remember that guns are not toys

    and should be treated with respect

    taught but everyonewho is around gunsshould know

    Alcohol and/or drugsshould never be consumedand/or used when handlingor will be handlingfirearms.

    The first thing you do whenyou pick up any gun, ischeck to see if its loaded.

    Before you pick up oraccept a gun fromsomeone, make sure you

    know how it works. If youdont know or cantremember, dont beembarrassed to asksomeone to show you. Itsthe smart thing to do.
