RESEARCHINTERESTS

My methodological research focuses on the development of multivariate statistical methods for theanalysis of multiple outcomes. In particular, methods for jointly modelling outcomes measured on dif-ferent scales (non-commensurate outcomes) and methods for pooling information for decision makingin situations of multivariate outcomes.Regarding collaborative research I have been involved in several projects of clinical, epidemiologicaland health services research with focus on kidney research. I co-lead the Centre fo Kidney Research atthe Westmead Children’s Hospital, which includes more than 40 researchers.

TEACHINGEXPERIENCE

I have more than 20 years of experience teaching basic and advanced statistical courses for undergrad-uate and graduate students, as well as Health professionals seeking competence in data analysis. Formany of these courses I was the main developer of the syllabus and the pedagogic material. I wasan early adopter of technology to support the learning process and interested in its added-value asa pedagogic tool. In 1997, I developed a Web based manual on introductory Biostatistics for Healthprofessionals (http://stat.med.up.pt) and I conducted some small studies evaluating the use of com-puter assisted learning in my own teaching and my Pedagogic Report (Provas de aptidao pedagogica ecapacidade cientıfica) described an online lecture on linear regression.

Below, I enumerate my recent experience in Australia and the main courses I developed and taughtduring my academic career. In this list, I do not include the long list of short courses (typically, 3-4days) on basic Statistics, regression methods, survival analysis, systematic reviews, sample size andpower analysis, clinical trials, and research methods, offered during summer schools, conferences,
