SpeakerBioSusanW.Stralka,PT,DPT,MS,ACHEisalicensedphysicaltherapistwithovermanyyearsofexperiencetreatingbothmusculoskeletalandneurovascularconsequencesofinjury.SheisaguestlecturerattheUniversityofTennesseeHealthScienceCenterinMemphis,Tennessee.SusanearnedanAdvancedMaster’sinMusculoskeletalDisordersandaDPTfromtheUniversityofTennesseeHealthScienceCenterinMemphis,Tennessee.Shehasastrongclinicalbackgroundinorthopedicsaswellasmirrortherapyandhaspresentednationallyandinternationallyinupperandlowerextremitydysfunctionandpainmanagement.Susanhaswrittenarticlesonawidevarietyoftopicsrelatedtophysicaltherapyformanynationalpublicationsandhealthjournals.Hermostrecentpublicationsare“GradedMotorImagery”intheJournalofHandTherapyandachapteron“ThoracicOutletSyndrome”inthebookentitledNeckandArmPainSyndromes.
Ms.StralkaisveryactiveinthecommunitywiththeGermantownChamber,GermantownRotaryClubandGermantownCivitanClubaswellaswithmanyothercivicorganizations.ShehasheldnumerousstateandnationalofficeswiththeAmericanPhysicalTherapyAssociation(APTA)andtheArthritisAssociation.In2009,SusanwasrecognizedbytheArthritisAssociationasVolunteeroftheYear.Withthegoalofprovidingthebestrehabilitativecaretopatients,Stralkacontinuallyrecruitsandsupportsinnovativeclinicalprogramstobenefitfuturepatients.
CourseDescriptionGradedMotorImageryisanemergingtherapeuticstrategyfortreatingpatients.Itintegratesestablishedprinciplesofgradedexposureandresponsepreventionwiththecurrenttheoriesintheneuroscienceofpainandneuroplasticity.GradedMotorImageryconsistsoflateralitytraining,imageryandmirrortherapy.Thislecturewillpresentamodeltounderstandtheroleofthebrainandwaystousea“top-down”treatmentprogramtotreatthechangesthatoccurinthebrain.Thislectureisappropriatefortherapiststreatingorthopedicaswellasneurologicalconsequencesofinjury.
