Interview with an ASU DrummerInterview conducted by Jose Hermosa

So if you havent seen the video of the ASU drummer that passes out during a live feed, do it! Look it up under Tenor drummer passes out on Youtube. I actually know this guy and was able to get an exclusive interview with him. Enjoy!

Name: Nick Arocho. Year/Major: Junior- Jazz Performance for Drumset

Jose- Alright buddy, so I know what happened and you know what happened, but please share with my fellow POA members whatwent on in this video?

Nick - Well I was a freshman and it was my rst week of college, and also our rst week of band camp as well. So it was my rst Fri -day night living by myself and in the college atmosphere. Even though I knew we had a rehearsal the next day at 8 a.m., my friends inthe band invited me out for a get together at a friends house. I had a lot of fun that night, but when I woke up at 7:59 a.m., I wasnthaving such a great time. I then remembered my instructor saying If there is ONE day you are not late this season... it is tomorrow,

because we are lming a live webcast for www.bandirectors.com, broadcasting a clinic on how to run a drumline. SO DONT BELATE! I then sprinted out of my dorm to rehearsal and jumped in just in time for the clinic to start.

I was a little hazy still from the previous night, and very dehydrated, and I felt terrible. And about 3 exercises into the clinic, IKNEW I was going to pass out. So I waited for the next available moment to step out of the shot, which I knew would be right after the dirty attack we usually played that early in the season. So we cut after the attack, and I put my sticks down on the tenors andstarted to walk away out of the shot, knowing that I had about ten seconds until I was lights out. However, as I was walking away, Inoticed my sticks falling off of my drums. Not wanting to get scolded by the instructor for having my sticks fall all over the place inthe video, I regrettably went back to x them, and about ve seconds later, my knees buckled, and I toppled over my tenors like a ragdoll.

The next thing I remembered was opening my eyes and seeing the entire drumline and staff in a huddle staring down at my limp body. After regaining my hearing and vision, I then noticed a couple paramedics and re ghters running towards me. They gave me some

uids and helped me recover, but nothing they could give me could take away the extreme case of embarrassment I had after I passedout over my drums in front of 1000+ band directors on a live webcast at ASU on how to run and manage a drumline. Yep... I was thatguy.

J- Do you ever watch this video for fun? If so, what do you think about when you watch it? N - I actually watch it a lot if I am having a bad day or in a less than favorable mood. It de nitely makes me laugh and realize that myday could be far worse. At Blue Devils this summer my buddies watched it about 3 or 4 times a day on tour and thought it was funnier every time they watch it, and couldnt believe I was that guy.

J- Do your friends still give you a hard time for this? N - I de nitely get my share of torment for the video still. I got the nickname Wobbles and that exercise we were playing when I passed out was renamed that day to Wobbles. My friends love to throw it on at parties and put it on loop. I have to admit, it is prettyepic, and I am really glad it was caught on lm. Ive already archived it on a disc so I can show my kids and future students some day.I REALLY knew it was a viral drum-accident-video when Scott Johnson (Drum captain at BD) was talking to our snare line in the lotone show about this video he and the staff just watched on the bus about some dumb kid passing out during a clinic over his tenors. The line busted up in laughter and told Scott that I happened to be the kid in the video, and after he nished laughing about it that dayin the lot, he still hasnt let me forget about it!

J- Last but not least and be honest...Who do you think will win the game? N - I think its easy to be good at football when you live in a place like Tucson :) Go Devils!

J- Ill forgive you for that one. Thanks for answering my questions and good luck on getting your Handicap parking pass...aka ASUdiploma.....Bear Down!

    N- Nice!

    J- I know!

Meet the Director Interview conducted by Rachel Bennett

The Leaky Bugle: How can you park wherever you want?

Rees : Well, I didnt originally have that power to park in so many different locations. But then

it got to the point where it was kind of understood that I needed to be at different locationsaround campus. I go back from the music building to the athletics pavillion, often at differenttimes of the day, and it is no longer consistent. It changes around a lot, and nally we were ableto qualify for the service permit pass. So the band of ce now has a couple that we can give outto certain individuals. Parking on this campus is dif cult, and we always have issues. During myearly years on campus, I got tickets all the time.

The Leaky Bugle: What is happening for the ASU game?

Rees : It is so unusual that the game is on a Thursday and a school day that we will not be able todo the usual ASU vs. UA exhibition, and because of that we dont have an available time slot todo a joint music rehearsal like we usually do for this particular game. Because of these factors,we probably wont be doing a joint halftime performance. Instead, we are both sharing halftime, and each school will get to have some part of halftime dedicated to their halftime show.

Billy the Band Geek Editors Note: Billy the Band Geek is an article that used to run in the Bugle where embarrassing storieswould be told by POA members under the pseudonym Billy the Band Geek. This week, the Bugle was ap-

proached with such a story. Names have been changed to protect the innocent.

It was three years ago, the night before the ASU game. That year, the game was in Tempe, so we were leavingTucson on buses at around 7AM the next morning. A few of us rookies were hanging out in someones dormroom when we decided, at 9PM, that we wanted to go to Walmart, despite the fact that it was raining and noneof us had cars.

Never fear, one member of our group who may or may not be drum major right now but who well refer to asBob said. I am from Tucson, so I know how Suntran works. (Those may not have been his exact words, butclose enough).

The rest of us were a little afraid of having to call our section leader the next morning and tell her we werentgoing to be at the ASU game because we had accidentally ended up in Mexico, but we really wanted to go toWalmart, so we followed Bob to the bus stop and onto the bus.

We got to Walmart successfully and did our shopping, but then Bob had to go home, leaving us to try and gethome on our own. Needless to say, we were at this point legitimately terri ed of ending up in Mexico.

It was still pouring rain as we waited at the bus stop for the right bus to come and take us back to campus. Thetime that Bob said the bus would be there came and went, and there was still no bus. As we began to freak out alittle, someone noticed that across the street from us, stopped at the red light and waiting to turn left, was a blue

    station wagon.

Wouldnt it be funny if that was Rees? this person said .

We all laughed until we recognized something, I dont remember if it was the license plate or a bumper sticker or something, on the back of the car that let us know that it was, in fact, Rees.

We kind of all stood there for a second or two. Should we do something? we wondered. Then the light turnedgreen.

Hurry, Billy! yelled someone from our group Ill call Sally. Give me your camera! And Sally ripped thecamera out of my hand and ran down the sidewalk, taking picture after picture as Rees turned left. Unfortunate-ly, the pictures have since been lost due to hard drive crashes and computer switches.

And yes, the bus did eventually come, and we made it back to campus successfully.

Bowl Game Scenarios/Game Previewby Chelsea Cohen

Well know for sure where were going by the end of this weekend, but heres a rundown of the possible sce-narios that would get us to each bowl game. First, some background information. The Pac 10 has tie-ins withsix bowl games: the Rose Bowl, the Alamo Bowl, the Holiday Bowl, the Sun Bowl, the Las Vegas Bowl, andthe Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (yes, that name is correct). There are currently only three teams in the Pac 10

who are eligible for a bowl game (A team needs a 6-6 record to be bowl eligible): Oregon, Stanford, and us.Although ASU currently has a 5-6 record and could get to 6-6 by beating us, they still arent eligible for a bowlgame because they played two FCS schools (the division below the one were in), and by NCAA rules, you canonly count one win against an FCS school toward bowl eligibility.

Washington State, UCLA, and California all nished with losing records. USC is ineligible for a bowl game - because theyre cheaters who got caught. Washington can become bowl eligible if it beats Washington Statethis weekend (a pretty good bet, although you never know). Oregon State can become bowl eligible if it beatsOregon this weekend (not going to happen). So the end of the regular season will most likely see the Pac 10with four bowl eligible teams: Oregon, Stanford, Washington, and Arizona. If Oregon beats Oregon State, theyare going to the National Championship.

Rose Bowl (Pasadena): How We Get ThereWe make it to the Holiday Bowl when a huge earthquake destroys Qualcomm Stadium (luckily, no one is in-

jured). The game then has to be moved to Pasadena, where we get to play in the Rose Bowl.

AKA.its not going to happen. Sorry.

Alamo Bowl (San Antonio): How We Get ThereIts looking like this is the most likely option. Assume Oregon goes to the National Championship. Then Stan -ford gets to move up to the Rose Bowl, right? Wrong. Theres a BCS clause that states that this year, the RoseBowl must take the highest ranked team from a conference that does not automatically get a bid to a BCS bowlshould it lose a team to the National Championship. So TCU will head to the Rose Bowl instead of Stanford. But wait. Theres another BCS clause that states that all teams that nish in the top four of the BCS rankingshave to get a bid to a BCS bowl. Stanford is currently #4. So barring any crazy shenanigans this weekend, theyll be heading to a BCS bowl game as well, most likely the Fiesta Bowl or the Orange Bowl. This leavesus to move up into the Alamo Bowl and Washington to go to the Holiday Bowl.

Another possibility is that Auburn, currently #1 in the BCS rankings and Oregons likely National Champion -ship opponent, loses to South Carolina this weekend. This could very well open the door for TCU (#3 BCS) toslip into the National Championship. If this happens, the clause about the Rose Bowl having to take a non AQ

team is void because therell be a non AQ team in the National Championship. Then Stanford can go to theRose Bowl and well still end up in the Alamo Bowl.

If Oregon loses but Stanford still manages to stay in the top 4, Oregon will go to the Rose Bowl and Stanfordto another BCS bowl, meaning we could still be in the Alamo Bowl.

The above all assume we beat ASU. However, if we lose to ASU and Washington State pulls an upset and beatsWashington, well still go to the Alamo Bowl simply because theres no one else available.

Fun story: Some projections have us in the Alamo Bowl...against Nebraska. Rematch?

Holiday Bowl (San Diego): How We Get There

However, the Holiday Bowl is still a possibility. If we lose to ASU, we end the season on a 4 game losingstreak. Bowl games dont like that. Its worthwhile to note that just because the Alamo Bowl is the second Pac10 bowl doesnt mean that the second place Pac 10 team goes there. It means the Alamo Bowl has the secondCHOICE of Pac 10 teams. If Washington is bowl eligible and weve just lost 4 games in a row, the AlamoBowl could pick them over us, even though we: a) have a better overall record and b) beat them by 30 points

with our backup quarterback. Then wed end up in the Holiday Bowl, which would probably not be happy withhaving us back, but theyd have to deal with it because they wouldnt have another choice.

Also, if Oregon loses and Stanford drops out of the top 4, Oregon will go to the Rose Bowl, Stanford to theAlamo Bowl, and then we could end up in the Holiday Bowl.

Sun Bowl (El Paso): How We Get ThereOregon loses, Stanford drops out of the top 4, we lose to ASU, and the Holiday Bowl picks Washington or Oregon State over us.

Las Vegas (Las Vegas, duh): How We Get ThereSame as above, except the Sun Bowl picks who the Holiday Bowl didnt out of Washington and Oregon State.So..very, very unlikely, although technically possible

Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (San Francisco): How We Get There Not mathematically possible. Fighting hunger will have to wait for another year.

Game PreviewIn the big picture, this game probably doesnt matter that much. Were still going to a legit bowl game - its

just that the only thing this game most likely decides is whether its the Alamo Bowl or the Holiday Bowl, andI personally wouldnt mind going to either place. But we all know that saying this game doesnt matter thatmuch isnt true. I mean, its ASU. We hate them. And I, for one, will be very upset to close out my years inArizona Stadium with a loss to ASU. But have no fear. We should win this one. Key word being should.

I think weve all noticed by now that our football team can be erratic at times. Sometimes we play really well(like the last two minutes of the USC game), and sometimes we dont (like the rest of the USC game). ASUs5-6 record is kind of deceiving, too. Two of their losses, to Wisconsin and USC, were only by a point. Wis-consin is now the #5 team in the country. They also gave Oregon and Stanford two of their toughest tests thisseason before eventually losing. The sucky thing for ASU is that losses are losses, and theyre not going to a

bowl game because two of those ve wins were over NAU and Portland State, both FBS teams, and you canonly count one win over an FBS team toward bowl eligibility.

ASUs backup quarterback, Brock Osweiler, will be starting on Thursday after starter Steven Threet wasknocked out of the UCLA game with a concussion last weekend. Osweiler came in and threw for 380 yardsand four touchdowns in ASUs 55-34 win, though, so he can de nitely play. However, Nick Foles threw for 448 yards and three touchdowns against the top team in the country last week, while UCLA is in the lower rungs of the Pac 10. Quarterback advantage: us.

In the end, I think our football team will come out pumped up and ready to beat our hated neighbors from thenorth, and our football team is very, very good when they want to be. So nal score:

    Arizona: 35ASU: 27
