A TIMELESS LANdScAPE

about 40 per cent of arizona is desert, and the state’s largest is the sonoran Desert, a mixture of heat, beauty, flora and perfect stillness that seems to captivate most visitors. the gigantic saguaro cactus is the symbol of the sonoran (it’s only found there); the instantly-recognizable sentinel of the southwest. a great place to recommend is the arizona-sonora Desert Museum (outside tucson) where coming face to face with desert critters (arachnophobia alert!) is a fun way to understand this spellbinding landscape.

little-visited, but at the heart of what is unique about arizona, is the Four corners (the northeast part of the state, where it intersects with neighbouring new Mexico, colorado and Utah). here, native peoples carry on traditional lifestyles, creating a rich tapestry of ceremony, custom and arts. land and culture are tightly woven; the snow-capped san Francisco peaks are home to the katsina spirits that guide the hopi, the sandstone spires of Monument Valley mark the bodies of slain legend monsters, navajo farmers still plant crops and herd sheep on the valley floor of canyon de chelly.

arizona is also known for its canyons – more than five million visitors visit Grand canyon each year, making it one of the most visited natural attractions in the world. adventuresome travellers head for the back roads with local guides, hiking the mystical depths of narrow, twisted slot canyons like antelope or canyon X.

THE SkIES ABOVE

there’s magic in the desert of arizona. as the last light fades from the evening sky, stillness descends, and the heavens are filled with millions of twinkling stars. astronomy and planetarium programs bewitch everyone from stargazing newbies to seasoned skywatchers.

and all the stars align for birders looking to check new species off their list. With such a variety of ecosystems – desert, pine forests, arid plateaus, remote canyons – hundreds of species of birds can be found as they migrate between winter and summer habitats.

Your clients can take to the skies for their own birds-eye view. What could beat floating over a maze of red rocks, dipping into a mile-deep canyon, or spying the junction where green canyon waters merge with the brilliant blue of a lake? a hot air balloon ride, helicopter sightseeing tour, or ride in an ultralite plane can only be described as unforgettable!

A LANd OF cULTURES

experience the cultural traditions of the native americans, spanish and anglos that blend into an intriguing mixture of story, language, festivals, food and art witnessed on arizona tribal lands where visitors are welcome and can enjoy everything from pueblo dance ceremonies to the stalls at craft markets where you can negotiate the purchase of an authentic piece of jewelry.

ONLy IN ARIzONA An old Spanish proverb promises “the lands of the sun expand the soul.” with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Arizona is that land; the region’s extraordinary character can seduce even the most casual visitor and be experienced at these “only in Arizona” stops:

Grand Canyon: wOne of the Seven Natural wonders of the world and a must-see stop on every itinerary.

Petrified forest national Park: The stories of climate and geological forces are told in the logs preserved as colourful crystal patterns of petrified wood.

MonuMent Valley: This dreamlike landscape of red spires, buttes and mesas has taken centre stage in countless movies and commercials.

Canyon de Chelly national MonuMent: This labyrinth of canyons holds a record of human history from the the Anasazi to the Navajo who still call this sacred site home.

An old Spanish proverb promises “the lands of the sun expand the soul.” with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Arizona is that land; the region’s extraordinary character can seduce even the most casual visitor and be experienced at these “only in Arizona” stops:

kartChner CaVerns state Park: A “living” cave – where water still sculpts the rock and the colourful minerals and formations continue to grow.

saGuaro CaCtus: Trademark of the Sonoran desert, and found nowhere else on Earth. Best place to find them? Saguaro National Park near Tucson.

red roCks of sedona: Native Americans have revered the rocks for centuries; New Age gurus claim that they contain high-energy called vortexes.

hubbell tradinG Post: A bridge between two cultures, the trading post is the place to find quality jewelry, Navajo rugs and Native arts and crafts.

history buffs can visit prehistoric ruins or centuries-old pueblo villages or spanish missions. the shelves of historic trading posts are still filled with authentic wares. Many sacred sites are open to those who visit them with respect and an open mind.

arizona’s colourful history also means a healthy dose of Wild West lore. tombstone, “the town too tough to Die,” stages mock gunfights in the streets – a nod to the infamous Gunfight at the o.k. corral which lasted just 30 seconds but has been bringing tourists to the small town for over a century. Mining towns, ghost towns, dude ranches and movie locations all speak to the roots of arizona’s Wild West image.

HAPPILy EVER AFTER

With a setting for every budget and every style, arizona is the place to get hitched! From rustic ranch ceremonies to posh resort affairs (where no detail is spared), romance is in the desert air. With so much to do, such a variety of places to stay and such reliable weather, arizona is perfect honeymoon country. award-winning spas, championship golf courses, dude ranches, jeep trips, rafting trips and road trips – the challenge will be narrowing down a choice.

FEEd THE SOUL

culture-vultures can dive into a treasure trove of architectural finds just waiting to be explored. the collective history begins with the state’s prehistoric residents and their ancient cliff

dwellings at sites like canyon de chelly or Montezuma castle national Monument. the influence of the ancient peoples is reflected in the modern works of architecture – churches, hotels, resorts and museums – many designed by famous hands.

they like to celebrate in the Grand canyon state and if you can think of a reason, there’s most probably a festival in the works! Mariachi band and dance performances honour the links to Mexican culture. the tucson Folk Festival features more than 100 acts in two days. Birders congregate for workshops, hikes, tours and photography classes.

A TASTE OF ARIzONA

southwestern cooking is one of the fastest growing cuisines in north america…the dishes are distinctive and packed with the flavour influences of the native americans and spanish conquistadors. Visitors who want to follow their taste buds can tour an olive mill, join the fun at an annual peach festival or fill their baskets at a pick-your-own farm. kicking it up a notch, the arizona salsa trail links communities that grow, produce and serve the spicy Mexican condiment.

oenophiles looking for the ultimate escape need look no further than arizona’s three distinct wine regions – the northern wine area of Verde Valley near sedona, the Willcox region of southeast arizona, and the sonoita/elgin region in the south part of the state. three specific wine trails guide visitors through the regions – most of the stops are at small, family-run wineries where the owners and operators take time to meet and greet guests. h

the sonoran Desert sprawls across much of southern arizona and it’s here that you find that iconic sentinel of

the desert, the multi-armed, saguaro cactus. the best desert introduction is at the arizona-sonora Desert Museum, a world-

renowned zoo, botanical garden and natural history museum near tucson. Daily demonstrations and interpretive programs range from a butterfly walk, to a behind-the-scenes tour with an animal keeper. at the foothills of the santa catalina Mountains, the elegant hacienda del sol Guest ranch is a tucson landmark that has been recognized by National Geographic as a geotourism destination. after a day of demanding outdoor adventure, guests can relax in the Grill, the ranch’s award-winning restaurant that holds the distinction of “tucson’s Most romantic Dining.”

in the northern part of the state, a land of dramatic red buttes, spires and deep canyons define the high desert of the Four corners region. rafting the colorado river through the Grand canyon is considered a must-do item for outdoors adrenaline junkies. there is no shortage of hiking trails at Grand canyon (multi-day hikes into the canyon are popular with the very fit, but there are plenty of short rim hikes for regular folks). hikes through the hauntingly beautiful slot canyons of antelope canyon and canyon X show you the power of water and erosion in sculpting the landscape. the evenings are your time to recharge and luxuriate: Grand canyon, sedona, page and lake powell all offer a range of hotels (from the historic el tovar national park lodge on the canyon rim, to the swishy adobe Grand Villas in sedona where fresh baked bread is prepared in your villa upon arrival).

When the sun goes down in arizona, it’s hard to beat the show put on by the moon and the stars. Blessed with temperate weather and clear night skies, the state is an astronomer’s dream, and home to a wide variety of observatories, nighttime astronomy programs and stargazing events.

at the kitt peak national observatory southwest of tucson, the collection of 26 telescopes includes the world’s largest solar telescope. Guided tours and nightly observing programs provide a great introduction to the brilliance of the skies. in Flagstaff, the historic lowell observatory houses the pluto Discovery telescope, used in the discovery of the distant dwarf planet. in addition to tours and gazing through telescopes, wanna-be astronomers can watch the live stream from nasa. the popular summer With the stars is full of family-friendly events from hands-on assembly of telescopes to widescreen multimedia shows.

skygazers who don’t want to stray beyond the city limits can visit the Dorrance planetarium at the arizona science center in downtown phoenix. Multiple shows at the interactive planetarium zero in on comets, black holes, the stars above arizona and a grand tour of the solar system.

observing the show in the night sky has become a popular activity at resorts that are offering special weekend stays with an astronomy theme. sunglow ranch, near the chiricahua national Monument, offers stargazing nights with their resident astronomer, where guests can use the resort’s telescope. in the phoenix area, the sky Jewels™ stargazing program at Gemland® has partnered with resorts to offer guests guided astronomy tours. Guests at the Boulders resort, camelback inn, Four seasons resort in scottsdale and JW Marriott Desert ridge resort can make arrangements at their hotel through the concierge.

experiencing the majestic landforms of arizona from above is guaranteed to electrify even the most experienced thrill seeker.

nothing can prepare you for seeing the Grand canyon from the seat of a helicopter. Flights with Maverick tours – ranging from 25 to 50

minutes in length – begin over the ponderosa pine forest of the plateau and then drop over the south rim revealing some of the most spectacular views in the entire canyon. Maverick also offers daylong tours from scottsdale/phoenix that give a birds-eye view of the sonoran Desert, the red rocks of sedona, and the majesty of the Grand canyon.

For clients wanting an adrenaline hit, the buzz of fighter combat or aerobatics may be the experience of a lifetime. aviation performance solutions/Fighter combat international in phoenix prepares the thrill seeker to be their own pilot and take control in half-day experiences to five-day air combat missions. aerobatic flights allow riders to test their limits, always under the guidance of an expert aerobatic instructor. the Best Western legacy inn & suites in Mesa and the hyatt place phoenix in Gilbert both offer special room rates for program registrants.

there’s always peace and solitude with soaring quietly and slowly above the arizona desert, whether skydiving, gliding or riding in an ultralite plane, or floating quietly in the basket of a hot air balloon. these are “once-in-a-lifetime” experiences that your clients will come back for over and over again.

For those who like to stay a little closer to terra firma, skyVenture arizona (located between phoenix and tucson) simulates skydiving at their state-of-the-art indoor wind tunnel. clients can still “get the thrill” trying various flying and aerobatic skills without having to jump out of an airplane or use a parachute.

arizona’s rugged terrain is perfect for mountain biking. the ski lift at sunrise park resort in the heart of the White Mountains is outfitted with special bike carriers to carry equipment to the top of sunrise Mountain. the resort offers bike rentals and all-day lift tickets for mountain bikes during the summer. in the Verde river basin area, the McDowell competitive track offers three loops totalling 24 kilometres – with levels for average to expert riders.

cavers love the southern part of the state. adventuresome souls can take a guided tour at the world-famous kartchner caverns. For those who need a little more breathing room, colossal cave

there’s more life in the desert than you would expect. With a temperate climate and a wide diversity of terrain, the skies of arizona are a birder’s paradise. More than 500 species of birds pass through a green corridor as they migrate from northern nesting grounds to southern wintering climes. Birding hotspots like ramsey canyon, the huachuca Mountains, Verde Valley and sedona attract serious birders who return year after year.

Many visitors also come for the annual bird festivals. For five-days in January, Wings over Willcox Birding & nature Festival combines a nature expo, educational seminars and tours on southeast arizona’s geology, botany and archaeology. the springtime Yuma Birding and nature Festival holds workshops, field trips, speakers and photography classes. and the state’s longest running nature festival, the southwest Wings Birding & nature Festival, includes everything about birding plus guided nature tours. h

Yes, there’s a soft, romantic side to the history of the Wild West, and it’s never far away in atmosphere-steeped towns like tombstone, Bisbee and Jerome. tombstone’s sweet side comes into springtime bloom when the world’s largest lady Banks rose tree creates a sweet-scented canopy of ivory tea roses under which couples exchange their vows. Bisbee’s abundance of Victorian-style bed and breakfast inns lends a warm nostalgic air. restored inns like the surgeon’s house Bed & Breakfast in the old copper mining town of Jerome boast a mile-high view across the Verde Valley. Quirky Jerome, designated a national historic District, is now a lively tourist and artist centre, and “the largest ghost town in america.”

You can’t beat arizona’s natural outdoors! the magnificent shoshone point along the south rim of the Grand canyon offers couples one of the world’s most memorable photo backdrops. the red rocks of the sedona-oak creek area glow a spectacular crimson in the setting sun. Facilities like the sedona Golf resort and the lodge at sedona, an elegant Mission-style bed and breakfast inn, create the perfect marriage of romance and splendour.

city-bound? phoenix and scottsdale are known for lavish luxury resorts, ringed by the stunning photo opportunities of the surrounding sonoran Desert and the drama of peaks like camelback Mountain. the five-diamond Fairmont scottsdale princess is set against the majestic purple McDowell Mountains; its Willow stream spa is ranked one of the best in north america. stars such as clark Gable and carole lombard honeymooned at the arizona Biltmore – its flower-filled gardens are a favourite setting for nuptials.

MUSIc FILLS THE AIR

the multi-layered musical heritage of both native american and hispanic cultures are especially strong – from the haunting, spiritual sounds of the native american flute

to the lively strings of the Mexican Mariachi bands, arizona’s musical roots run deep.

phoenix is home to a significant new attraction, the Musical instrument Museum; the world’s first museum of ethnic, folk or tribal musical instruments from around the globe. Guests savour the multimedia collection through their ears as well as their eyes – the sounds of various instruments are played through wireless headsets as you move from display to display. With a collection of more than 12,000 instruments from around the world, it’s a music lover’s dream.

arizona’s picture-perfect climate makes it a natural setting for outdoor festivals featuring the historic styles and influences unique to the southwest. Mariachi festivals draw thousands of music lovers, peaking in mid-september when the annual Fiestas patrias celebrations, commemorating Mexico’s independence from spain, bring lively music, traditional foods and dance to the streets. and there’s a festival-like energy at phoenix’s p.F. chang’s rock and roll Marathon held each January. More than 30,000 runners and walkers enjoy bands located at every mile mark of the race path.

BUILT ON NATIVE FOUNdATIONS

arizona architecture means more than the plank-sidewalks of dusty Wild West towns. the influence of the state’s earliest native residents shows in the styles that integrate function with the surrounding environment.

high in the limestone walls of the ancient Montezuma castle national Monument, just north of phoenix, is the best-preserved prehistoric cliff dwelling in north america. the alcove high above the valley floor shelters dwellings that are a harbinger of the pueblo-style architecture seen today.

spanish colonialism also left its mark in the beauty of arizona’s haciendas and missions, especially near tucson. one of the state’s oldest structures, the luminous Mission san Xavier del Bac (“White Dove of the Desert”), is considered one of the country’s finest examples of this period. the white walls of fired adobe brick are almost two metres thick; the interior of this national historic landmark is decorated with original statuary and murals that are a step back in time.

american architectural icon Frank lloyd Wright also made his mark on the state – and arizona on him. Wright’s trademark use of indigenous materials is evident at one of phoenix’s first resorts, the elegant arizona Biltmore. nicknamed “the Jewel of the Desert,” the Biltmore is where irving Berlin lounged by the pool and penned White christmas. nearby, at the foot of the McDowell Mountains, Wright’s winter home is now the headquarters of the Frank lloyd Wright Foundation. the tours at taliesin West allow the public to experience Wright’s craftsmanship and learn about the famous architect’s philosophies and theories of design.

at the edge of lake powell is the world’s largest known natural bridge, the rainbow Bridge, a salmon-pink span of sandstone, symbolizing rainfall and fertility to the navajo. in 2010 the Bridge celebrates its centennial anniversary as a national Monument.

the hopi cultural center in second Mesa introduces visitors to the deeply-rooted, spiritual ways of one of the continent’s oldest civilizations. the 12 small villages on the three mesas of hopiland have breathtaking views over the lower desert, and often hold colourful events like the hopi snake Dance in the village of Walpi. the heard Museum in phoenix’s arts district showcases the cultural heritage of native peoples – it’s a must-see introduction to the founding heritage and art of the southwest. indoor and outdoor galleries provide space for music, dance, festivals and priceless native american fine art.

any visit to the northern part of the state should start at the Museum of northern arizona in Flagstaff. With more than five million pieces on display, the Museum is a treasure trove of information on the history of the tribes, traditional weaving, pottery, katsinas and jewelry, as well as the geology of the sacred land.

the pueblo Grande Museum is located in phoenix at the 1,500-year-old ruins of a prehistoric hohokam village. Visitors can walk the ruin trails and explore the remains of an 800-year-old platform mount that may have been used for ceremonies.

TRAdINg POSTS TO gALLERIES

Many visitors come to arizona in search of colourful navajo rugs, fine silver and turquoise jewelry, intricately woven baskets and carved hopi katsina dolls. the crafts made by native ar tisans are considered works of ar t, and finding the right piece can be a part of the holiday fun. part of the joy is the chance to buy from the creator or tribe member at a historic trading post or roadside stand; most original pieces are marked with the ar tist’s name and tribal affiliation.

the hubbell trading post in Ganado is known for its outstanding collection of navajo rugs, as well as pueblo katsina dolls, pottery and paintings. it’s a good spot for the serious collector to purchase high quality in an historic location.

Just 30 minutes from the Grand

the 11th reason to spa in arizona might be the choice. some 131 spas await you and your clients. Do people really just like to spa or do they like to do other things as they spa, after they spa?

wHAT’S IN A SPA?

You’ll need to study up on the difference between a destination spa and a resort spa. here’s a start: A resort spa is a place where you can enjoy spa treatments while staying overnight. While a destination spa offers an overall immersion in healthy living and an opportunity for personal transformation, resort spas are more about providing a relaxing, pampering experience for people staying at the resort. (source: http://spas.about.com/od/resortspas/a/resortspa.htm)

SPA ANd…

Your clients may want a day spa or they may want a destination resort and spa or they may go for a spa where the theme is set as in you are there to eat right, learn how, lose weight, get fit. once you know which type of spa you are promoting, you can add to the spa menu. You can create a series of spa anD… programs. spa in one place and visit another. Get fit and take a walking tour of the Grand canyon. Your spa and… programs can sell all of arizona. the spa being the main draw followed by art, music, outdoor adventures…there is no limit to what you can package with a arizona spa vacation.

SPA TRENdS TO wORk INTO yOUR PLAN

as you explore the trends in spa attendance and the reasons to spa you’ll gain more and more ideas for creating a sparizona program. here are four trends i found that you can ponder for yourself:• there’s a re-awakening of male grooming, manicures and facials• mothers and daughters are bonding at the spa• gender-neutral interior designs – (some men are scared
