    1. 05 South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park (p282) Best introduction to the Grand Canyon is todrive the roads that extend east & west along the rim from the main commercial area, known as Grand

    Canyon Village. *The 8-mile West Rim Drive follows the edge of the canyon closely and has numerousoverlooks, including one aptly named The Abyss. *NOTE: The West Rim is closed in summer due to bigcrowds; visitors may use a free shuttle. Best view from West Rim Drive is in late afternoon.2. 05 East Rim Drive is longer and has fewer overlooks, but canyon vistas are more colorful. You can seestretches of the Inner Gorge and the Colorado River at Grandview Point and Lipan Point. Best viewfrom East Rim Drive is in early morning.

    AZ002 Navajo National Monument 05 (p283) After leaving Page, (Arizona) Rtes 98 and 160 go through theNavajo Indian Reservation. The well-preserved cliff dwellings of the Navajo National Monument rank among themost stunning sights in Arizona. Unfortunately, they are among the most isolated, requiring long treks to the ruins atBetatakin (5 miles round trip) and Keet Seel (17 miles round trip). Fortunately, Betatakins magnificent setting in a

    sandstone canyon can be viewed from an overlook that is just a half-mile walk from the visitor center. The ruins areframed by an arch 452 feet high. (You can rent horse from a Navajo family for a trip to Keet Seel, but only 20 visitorsa day are allowed.)

    3(HT) Three of hte most elaborate of known cliff dwellings.AZ003 Monument Valley / Navajo Tribal Park 05 (p283) Many movies made here. The monuments are thebuttes, mesas, etc. You can take a 17-mile scenic drive in the tribal park operated by the Navajo Nation. The dirtroad is slow going but not dangerous.AZ004 Petrified Forest National Park 05 (p283)

    1. A 28-mile scenic drive. Frequent turn-offs. Drive can be divided into 3 sections:2. Painted Desert (mineral-streaked land,3. petroglyphs and other ancient remnants are at Newspaper Rock and Puerco Ruin, and

    4. petrified wood in the southern section at two easy trails Long Logs Trail and Crystal Forest Trail.AZ005 Tombstone 05 (p286) Tombstone was touted as the town too tough to die. Site of the shootout at O.K.Corral, and the Boothill Cemetery. You can see bullet holes in the walls of the Bird Cage Theater, and have a drink inthe 1879 Crystal Palace Saloon. 13(HT) Former mining town, health resort, Bird Cage Theater, OK Corral, Boothill;nearby: Coronado National Monument.AZ006 Biosphere 2 05 (p287) Visitors can pee through the glass into this scientific laboratory sphere, butcannot enter. It was site to research from 199 to 1993. A tour of Biosphere 2 involves a film and self-guided walkaround the structure.
