President's Message (continued)Starting off the year, Mark Woehrle will give a presentation at the September meeting on digital photography for the artist. He will give an interesting perspective on how to make use of digital cameras as an additional creative tool for any artist. This presentation will be a preview of his October 2 day workshop which will be a hands on exploration of camera use and post production.

On Saturday, September 28 there will be a full day of activities starting with a photo session in the back room where Mark will shoot images of AAG members artworks and the images will be burned on a CD. There will be a fee for this service. In addition I will demonstrate how to cut mats using our new mat cutters located in the back room. In the afternoon there will be an information session for associate members to give them information on how to present their artwork in the best way for exhibition jurying.

In October, Jack Adams will give the meeting presentation on his technique for drawing the figure. Jack has been a professional artist and architect for many years and will share his expertise in a 1 day workshop on November 20. Also, the October meeting is when your collaborative art piece is due for exhibition. Remember the assignment I gave all members at the May meeting to make a piece of art in collaboration with someone else. All works brought to the October meeting will be displayed through the month.

In November Julie Pollard, a well known local watercolorist and author of many popular books on watercolor technique's will give the meeting presentation. She will also give a 2 day workshop in January.

All juried members are invited to submit 2 works for an exhibit at Paradise Valley Community College opening November 25 with a reception.

The January meeting will have a presentation by ASU art professors Muriel Magenta, Hilary Harp and Mary Neubauer on their collaboration Women, Art and Technology.

Much more is planned for the new year, and more information will be announced in the next AAG newsletter. It will be an exciting year with lots of exhibition opportunities besides those listed here, many different workshop topics, and a variety of presentations at the meetings. I hope you will participate in all of the events. I look forward to being your president, if you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected]

President's MessageAs your new president, I would like to invite you to join me in considering why we belong to AAG. For myself, the reasons are many. I joined because I realize that in spite of my 40 years of artistic experience, I have much to learn about making art and being a better artist. I also joined because an organization such as ours represents a tradition of talented, knowledgeable people who care about the organization, and I value that tradition.

This year we have lined up a series of meeting programs, Guild School of Art workshops, Critique group meetings, professional practices days, and exhibitions that will, I hope, appeal to all of our members. From the survey distributed last spring, we have programming that will inspire, enlighten and entertain you, no matter what level of experience or media.

AAG Sculptors’ Group The AAG Sculptor’s Group meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept 3, 2013, 7pm at the AAG Building. The guest artist will be Ingrid Donaldson who is a Designer, Metal Smith and Sculptor. She began her artistic career in 1995 when she opened Hot Sand Glassworks; a retail and instruction based glass studio. As she developed her own personal styles and techniques, she gained national recognition and was invited to study directly with the Bullseye Glass Company and several internationally known glass masters. She is a graduate student and an instructor at Arizona State University as well as a resident artist at Mesa Arts Center (MAC). Her work involves the investigation of the current trends in environmental devastation. Her web address is: http://www.ingriddonaldsondesign.com/. There will also be a peer critique.

EXCITING IMPROVEMENTS AT AAGIn order to accommodate an ever-increasing demand for more programs and more groups using our fine facility, we are making some changes. The back room is being reorganized so it can function for small groups even while a bigger function is taking place in the main room. We ask for your support in maintaining the new “Small Studio” by using the new arrangement of our furnishings whenever they must be ’put away’. We have made our storage spaces much more compact, and ask everyone’s help to maintain its neatness.

We are also working to enhance both studios by providing more options for doing your artwork in our space. These include a special stand just for a still life setup, an additional sink in the small studio, and some limited storage space for small items needed by frequent users. We have a new information display carousel. It is a movable display with special quadrants for various interest groups. Be sure to visit this often, since this is where you will find all sorts of info on AAG functions and on functions of other Valley arts groups as well.

NEW AAG LENDING LIBRARYThanks to a donation by Carol and Stu Tracy from the legacy of Carol’s mother, late AAG member Henrietta Goldstein, we now have a new AAG Lending Library of wonderful art instruction books. Members and guests may browse through the books whenever there is a meeting or function. Current members may borrow the books for up to a month at a time. Our new Librarian is Janet Wandrey. See her or read further procedures for borrowing books posted in the Library located in the display cabinet on the north wall of the main studio. We welcome donations of additional books any time.

IMPROVED AAG ART SUPPLY THRIFT STOREWe have a new larger area for the Art Supply Store and many new items to sell.

Josie Taglienti will exhibit 2 scrolls at The Museo d'Arte in Chianciano, Italy. The exhibit runs September 7th - 14th , 2013.The two pieces of art are titled, Danza dei Burattini (Dance of the Marionettes) and La Notte del Carnevale (Carnival of the Night) .

Still-life Workshop at AAGThe Arizona Artists Guild provided the perfect spot for the 4 day (July 11-14) still life workshop taught by Qiang Huang. Li Mahalik, who coordinated the workshop, moved the workshop to AAG from another location due to the extra amount of space available. With eighteen attendees plus the Instructor, his wife, Song and son, Jonathan, there was plenty of room to move around.
