Christ the King—St. Anthony Parish Burlington September 1, 2019

My dear family in Christ, Last weekend’s gospel about the narrow way and this weekend’s gospel about choosing the lower place are powerful reminders of what Our Lord considers important and essential versus what the world values as most important. The gospel emphasizes losing our ego, stripping away selfishness and focusing on the service of others as more important than ourselves. The world wants us to consider our own desires and wishes above all else. The world wants us to pursue those things that will bring a moment of happiness or pleasure, while the Lord wants us to chase after those things that help us grow in virtue and holiness. As we are reminded in the gospel, we can’t serve two masters; we have to choose one over the other—the way of selfishness or the way of selflessness. Now, as in so many parts of our lives, the call to selflessness must be properly balanced according to our vocation and calling in life. Parents entrusted with the welfare of their children cannot completely abandon the need to make choices which will benefit their children while the same decision may seem to hurt others. While we may wish to deepen our spiritual lives through added fasting to our regular ascetical practices, if the fasting impinges upon our ability to fulfill our primary responsibilities and vocations, we should make changes to our fasting routine. Finding the proper balance between seeking to better ourselves (a good and necessary goal) and simply giving into every selfish inclination (a not-so-necessary goal) is likely going to be a lifetime chore for the majority of us. To achieve the proper balance between being self-absorbed and being other-centered requires regular prayer, careful reading of the scriptures, and a willingness to seek the lower seat. Another way of saying this is to seek true and honest humility. Not falsely declaring our unworthiness, but acknowledging our dependence upon the grace of God to accomplish anything in his name. This is definitely not an easy thing to achieve, but it is absolutely necessary. Let’s pray for the willingness to seek the lower places in life, so that we might be invited up higher by the Lord. In Christ, Msgr. John J. McDermott, VG

ANEW PLACE DINNER—SEPTEMBER Our next dinner date at ANew Place is Tuesday, September 10, at 6:30 PM. Please consider joining Monsignor McDermott and the Social Outreach committee in preparing and sharing a meal with vulnerable members of our community. We’ll be providing a meal on the second Tuesday of each month throughout 2019. Please contact the parish office for more information or to sign up for any month.

REGISTRATIONS ARE OPEN! Do you want to grow in your relationship with Jesus? Do you want to deepen your faith life? Our parish is offering a fall Light of the World retreat from October 11-14, 2019. This retreat will offer parishioners an opportunity to deepen their understanding of their call to holiness and to be sharers of the good news with others. Yes, every single one of us is called to holiness. Please prayerfully consider attending. Visit the parish website for more information and to register. You may also contact the parish office with any questions.
