Christ the King—St. Anthony Parish Burlington January 19, 2020

My dear family in Christ: This week brings us two commemorations to consider. The first is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. During this week, the Catholic Church unites with our Christian brothers and sisters around the world to pray for an ever growing unity among those who profess Jesus as Lord. In one of his final discourses in the Gospel of St. John, Our Lord prayed that all of His followers might be one. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Due to theological and ecclesiastical disputes, the Body of Christ continues to suffer from division and separation. During this week, we are asked to pray that, through common prayer and dialogue, the walls that separate Christians might be brought down. While there are still divisions among Christian denominations around the world, it is comforting to know that we share a common faith—that we are saved through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Pray that Christians might continue to work together to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus to the world. The second is the annual commemoration of the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade. It is a time for Catholics to join together in prayer to pray for an ever growing respect for the dignity of the human person from conception to natural death. Though often overshadowed by political rancor, this week will once again witness hundreds of thousands of people—young and old, male and female—from around our country gather in Washington, D.C., for the March for Life. This powerful witness hopes to touch the hearts of all citizens to work toward a greater protection for the gift of life. As Catholics, it is important for us to do our best to support this fundamental right. We do this through our prayer and our own support of those efforts which enhance human dignity. May we never neglect this call to promote, support, and defend life. As Pope Francis has written and preached: Unfortunately, what is thrown away is not only food and dispensable objects, but often human beings themselves, who are discarded as 'unnecessary.' For example, it is frightful even to think there are children, victims of abortion, who will never see the light of day; children being used as soldiers, abused and killed in armed conflicts; and children being bought and sold in that terrible form of modern slavery which is human trafficking, which is a crime against humanity. Msgr. John J. McDermott, VG
