How neuroscience advances can help

you cope with stress in the workplaceADVANCES in neuroscience meanwe’ve never been in a better posi-tion to understand how our bodiesphysically respond to the challeng-es of daily life – and how to helpourselves become more resilient.

Dr Tara Swart reveals essentialneuroscience insights for copingwith the stresses and strains of theworkplace.

1. Make time to look after yourbody

“Your body isn’t a taxi for yourbrain. You can’t think properly if you aren’t getting enough sleep,aren’t eating properly or don’texercise. You will be more prone toallowing unconscious bias to affectyour decisions if you haven’t slept

or exercised.”2. Don’t forget to check in with

your emotions“Disregarding the effect of emo-

tions on decision-making is a mas-sive leadership mistake. You mustengage both the logical and emo-tional side of your brain. Womenare faster at integrating logical andemotional data because they havemore physical connections betweenthe left and right sides of theirbrains than men.”

3. Your body is probably trying totell you something

“When you have a strong gutfeeling about a course of action,it could be the manifestation of accumulated wisdom. I see leadersbecome braver and more expertat trusting their gut instinct. Youalso need to read the physicalsigns – body language – of others,and the signs that your own bodyis showing you. Too many times Ihave met leaders who ignored chestpains and later experienced heartattacks.

4. It’s hard to let go of psychologi-cal pain

“The same part of the brainresponds to psychological and

physical pain but, when we experi-ence psychological pain, the braindoesn’t release opioids to counterthat pain. This mean the pain lin-gers in the body for longer.”

5. Cortisol harms your health –and that of your colleagues

“When the body is under stress, itreleases a hormone called cortisol.If you are chronically stressed,cortisol levels in the body remainhigh, which erodes immunity andcauses persistent colds, and even

cancer and heart attacks.“Cortisol also leaks out of our

skin via sweat: studies have shownthat leaders’ stress levels adverselyaffect their colleagues because of this hormone, and have caused‘dominoes’ of heart attacks inhigh-stress environments such asfinancial trading floors.”

6. Poor sleep is seriously bad foryour brain’s health

“During sleep, the brain under-takes a cleansing process thatcleans out proteins and neurotox-ins: this generally takes betweenseven and nine hours. Just oneper cent of the population doesn’tneed that much sleep to completethe cleansing cycle. Recent studies

have shown that brains not gettingenough sleep develop similaritieswith those of Alzheimer’s suffer-ers.

“Disrupted sleep has also beenshown to cause a fall in IQ of between five and eight points thefollowing day.”

7. Exercise and meditation physi-cally change your brain

“Voluntary exercise triggers ahormone that encourages neuro-plasticity and the growth of new

neurons. And meditating for threetimes a week for eight weeks hasbeen shown to result in the devel-opment of more folds in the surface

of the brain, which mamore able to cope with s
