Argos-3/4 PP

The purpose of creating Argos-3/4 Evaluation Pilot Projects is to

• i) independently and objectively evaluate Argos-3 for use by the global Met-Ocean community,

• ii) foster Argos-3 integration by manufacturers, and • iii) provide Argos-3 equipped in-situ tools to the

community for evaluation (CLS provides SVP and floats)

Argos-3 PP - Drifters

• DBCP 2008 in Cap Town,• 4 Manufacturers involved: Clearwater, Pacific, Gyre,

Metocean, Marlin Yug,• Buoys produced, tested via satellite and deployed• Hourly Sensor Data collection recovery: > 95%,• About 90% of power supply saving on Tx,

Argos-3 PP - Floats

• Ifremer / Webb Research and University of Washington already involved

• 11 floats will be produced, and deployed• Goals:

– High Sensor Data collection recovery performances,– Higher data volume with secure transmissions (handshaking),– Reduction of the surfacing duration,

Approach # 2

We focus on a surfacing duration < 30 minutes

Improvements for floats

• High performance for collecting hourly sensor acquisitions• Reduction for the surfacing duration• Large reduction of the power consumption allowing Tx of more

sensor information in a secured and robust,• Optimization of the transmission leading to a better use of the

satellite network and then better performances for users,• Secured Tx (check sum control),• Remote command to potentially change the mission,
