Music

• Argentine music is mostly known for tango, which developed in Buenos Aires but there are other music genres such as▫ Folk, pop, classical, jazz

• Folk music included styles known as ▫ Andean- sounds of local winds; uses

strings and percussion instruments

▫ Chacarera – The word “Chacra” means

farm; uses spanish guitar and bombo leguero

▫ Chamame- Accordion based

• Pop music included ▫ Tango▫ Argentine Rock▫ Electronic▫ Pop▫ Cumbia▫ Cuarteto

Dance

• Chamame-▫ People dance cheek to cheek

▫ Originated in the northern parts of Argentina

Settlers from Czechoslovakia, Poland, Austria and Germany which blended with the African

• Cuarteto-▫ Dance named after Cuarteto Leo

▫ Music is usually a solo singer piano, accordion, violin, or bandoneon

▫ Dancers gather in a circle and move counter-clockwise to a rhythm known as tunga-tunga

• Argentine Folk-▫ Folk music re-emerged in the

1960‟s bringing dance along with it

• Argentine Tango-▫ First appeared in 1880‟s

▫ Has developed into one of the most popular dances in the world

Sports• Futbol (Soccer)-

▫ Known as the National Game▫ Introduced in the 1860‟s by the

British soldiers ▫ The Argentine national team won

the World Cup in 1978 and 1986• Polo-

▫ Since the Argentine Polo team won the first Olympic gold medal in 1924 they have dominated the sport

▫ Argentine Gonzalo Pieres is one of the best polo players in the world

• Pato-▫ First played by the Gauchos▫ Pato means „Duck‟▫ The sport became dangerous and it

was banned in 1882▫ In the late 1930s, the sport was

revived with new rules

• Basketball, Rugby, Volleyball , Horse Racing are also important Argentine sports

• Field Hockey is becoming more and more popular

• Tennis was once only played by the wealthy, but now is played by young people across the country

Food

• Argentine cuisine has been influenced form Spanish, Italian, French, and other European cuisines▫ Because of this it has its own

distinct flavors in comparison to other Latin American cuisines

• Typical foods to Argentina are▫ Grilled meats Asado (BBQ), Chorizo,

Morcilla, Chinchulines, Mollejas

▫ Chimichurri – a sauce of herbs

▫ Breaded /fried meats Empanadas, Milanesas

• Depending on where you are regionally in Argentina the foods will change accordingly

The regions are ▫ Central region (Las

Pampas), Northwestern, Cuyo, Northeast, Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego
