Background

� In 1816, the United Provinces (Present Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay,and Uruguay ) of the Rio Plata declared their independence fromSpain.

� The country's population and culture were heavily shaped byimmigrants from throughout Europe particularly Italy and Spain.

� Up until about the mid-20th century, much of Argentina's history wasdominated by periods of internal political conflict between Federalistsand Unitarians and between civilian and military factions.

� Democracy returned in 1983 after a failed bid to seize the Falkland(Malvinas) Islands by force

� Has persisted despite numerous challenges, the most formidable ofwhich was a severe economic crisis in 2001-02 that led to violent publicprotests and the successive resignations of several presidents.

Economy Background

� Used to be one of wealthiest countries 100 years ago

� Argentina suffered during most of the 20th century from recurringeconomic crises, persistent fiscal and current account deficits, highinflation, mounting external debt, and capital flight.

� The Convertibility Plan, which had basically pegged the peso to theUS dollar for a decade, collapsed in 2002 as a result of thecombination of a large fiscal deficit and a substantial decrease incommodities prices.

� Interim President Adolfo RODRIGUEZ SAA declared a default -the largest in history - on the government's foreign debt in

December 2001

Economy

� Argentina experienced 5-year steady growth period fueled by highcommodities prices and low leverage. These two factors were keyto the rapid recovery of the economy after the 2002 financial crisis.

� Argentina has a market-oriented economy with abundant naturalresources , a well-educated population , an export-orientedagricultural sector and a relatively diversified industrial base.

� The country is classified as upper-middle income or a secondaryemerging market by World Bank.

� Argentina is one of G-20 major economies and founding member ofUnited Nations.
