Welcome Dr. PeckAthens Regional Health System
welcomed Dr. Charles “Chuck” Peck as its new CEO and President in March 2015.
Dr. Peck’s career has been highlighted by leadership spanning more than 30 years as a clinician, CEO, entrepreneur, medical school faculty member, medical director and partner in a worldwide healthcare consulting company.
He is a licensed internist and rheumatologist and certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine as well as the American Board of Rheumatology. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Peck earned his Bachelor degree in Psychology from Emory University and his Medical degree from New York University School of Medicine.
Dr. Peck’s wife, Cathy, is a nurse by profession. She has been very involved in the communities in which she and Dr. Peck have lived. She currently volunteers with the Loran Smith Center and is a Foundation Peds Reader.
In his September newsletter to employees, Dr. Peck summarized the health system’s 2015 accomplishments - “We have had
significant positive turnarounds in 2015 in our safety and quality scores, financial stability, and employee engagement. We still have much work to do if we are to reach our goals, but we are moving rapidly forward! We will continue to grow talent, be accountable, be bold, reach out, speak up, and build trust in 2016. We will also continue to develop key strategic partnerships, grow our physician practices, increase our inpatient presence and maximize our key hospital service lines.”
Dr. Peck has been very involved with the Athens Regional Foundation during his first year on the job. He has been gracious to host dinners with key donors, luncheons with local corporations, town hall meetings with past board members, retirees, and Auxiliary members, and has spoken at several community events hosted by the Foundation. He and Cathy have made a major commitment to the Foundation as new members of the Cornerstone Society.
The Foundation is happy to welcome Dr. Peck and Cathy to Athens Regional and look forward to working with them both in helping move Athens Regional forward.

Peds Painters is an art gallery featuring student artists from across northeast Georgia. The gallery is featured in the Pediatrics Unit at ARMC. The program encourages elementary and middle schools in Athens Regional’s primary service area (Barrow, Clarke, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, and Oglethorpe counties) to submit student works of art to inspire and uplift young patients receiving care at ARMC. The Athens Regional Foundation created the Peds Painters program to connect the children our community with the children receiving treatment at ARMC. The Pediatrics Unit at ARMC has 17 patient beds and serves children and youth from one month old to 18 years of age.

New Programs Putting People FirstATHENS REGIONAL FOUNDATION
The ARMC Retirees Association was organized by the Athens Regional Foundation to improve communication between ARMC and its retirees, to educate them about current and upcoming events and to provide them with opportunities to engage as volunteers and donors. The group was welcomed back on campus on August 13 for a town hall meeting with Dr. Charles Peck. Future plans include a retiree newsletter and quarterly events.

Athens Regional Foundation’s Heritage Circle
is comprised of supporters who have generously made a
planned gift in support of Athens Regional. By definition, a planned gift is a major gift, made in lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate planning.
Making charitable contributions is an art - a creative process that adapts to the changing needs and wishes of the donor. Planned giving is a means for individuals of all financial circumstances to make charitable gifts, enabling a donor to arrange contributions in ways that maximize his or her personal objectives. Indeed, there are a variety of plans designed to ensure a gift will be put to the best possible use and fit the donor’s financial needs and objectives and benefit Athens Regional.
Planned Giving enables donors to make larger gifts than they could make from their income. While some planned gifts provide a life-long income to the donor or someone else of their choosing, other gifts use estate and tax planning techniques to provide for charity and other heirs in ways that maximize the gift and/or minimize its impact on the donor’s estate.
Heritage Circle members are inspiring generosity through their commitment to support a future legacy of high quality healthcare in Athens and our surrounding communities.

In 1992, Carolann Eisenhart began a career at Athens Regional Medical Center that has spanned the last 23 years. Raised in Milledgeville, Georgia, she attended the University of Georgia as a freshman and fell in love with Athens – the people, the community, the town.
She went on to pursue a medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore and completed her residency in Emergency Medicine in Columbia, South Carolina. When she finished, she was able to move back to Athens and started working in the Emergency Department at Athens Regional as one of only seven physicians at the time. In 2000, she was named the Medical Director of the Emergency Department, and now serves with 24 Emergency Medicine physicians. Elected President of
the Medical Staff at Athens Regional in 2014, she is currently serving a two-year term and continues to be in love with the organization.
“When I came to Athens, I was attracted to this hospital because of the impact it has on our community. We are continuing to grow and develop services, and the people here are what set us apart,” says Dr. Eisenhart
of her experience at ARMC. “The commitment that our employees have to providing the best care to the community we serve is incredible. We have great staff, great physicians, and great leadership. It’s truly a privilege to be part of this team. I support the Foundation because I am able to, and Athens Regional has a bright future that I want to be a part of.”

The Pillar SocietyThe Pillar Society is the group of donors who support the
Athens Regional Foundation annually. Members contribute a minimum of $100 each year. These gifts allow the Foundation to improve established projects within Athens Regional while allowing for the creation of new ones.
During the Pillar Society recognition event, the J. W. Fanning Humanitarian of the Year Award is presented to an individual who has high personal values in their own life, while making significant contributions to Athens Regional through their time, interest, and commitment. The 2015 recipient was Mrs. Annette Barfield.
For over 13 years, Annette has served on the board for the Athens Community Council on Aging, graduated from the Council on Aging’s 2013 Senior Leadership Academy, served on the Athens Symphony Board, donating over 2,600 hours of service in various roles ranging from Board member to President. She has also served as a board member for the Athens Community Council on Aging, served as a member of the Council on Aging’s 2013 Senior Leadership Academy, a member of the Athens Symphony Board, and is very active at First Baptist Church of Athens.
The mother of three sons, grandmother to five, and great-grandmother to three, Annette is truly “grace personified.” She has been quoted saying that “A healthy life is much like a gift: one that is better when shared.”
This year’s Pillar Society reception also saw the addition of the Shelby J. Lacy Award. For over 41 years, Shelby Lacy displayed passion, commitment, and service to others during her career at Athens Regional.
The Shelby J. Lacy Award recognizes an Athens Regional employee who has made unselfish and significant contributions of time and talent to the community in which he or she lives and works.
Katie Calkin was named the 2015 recipient. Ironically, Shelby hired Katie in 1999. She holds a Masters degree in Public Health, and obtained the Masters level of Certified Health Education Specialist while working at Athens Regional. Her involvement in her community includes serving as the chair of the Adult Education committee at Oconee Street United Methodist Church. In that role, she expanded the adult Sunday School programs and has coordinated the ‘University of Faith’ program. She also volunteers with Interfaith Hospitality Network of Athens, Barnett Shoals Elementary School, and has served on the Barnett Shoals School Council.

The 1919 continues to engage young professionals throughout our community. Serving as ambassadors for the Athens Regional Health System, this group meets quarterly and offers members a chance to be involved in activities and service projects that benefit
Athens Regional. Since its inception, the group has focused on Children’s Services at ARMC, specifically supporting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Since beginning in 2010, the group has contributed over $74,000.
On May 22, 2015, Kimberly and Ryan Liebowitz welcomed two bundles of joy into their hearts. Their twins, Anna and Jacob, spent the first 16 days of their lives in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Both Kimberly and Ryan have been active supporters of Athens Regional for many years. Kimberly served as the Chair of The 1919 during 2015. Since its first event, The 1919 has supported the NICU.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A LEVEL III NICU?
The 1919’s 3rd Annual Mint Jubilee entertained guests on May 2 at Oconee Springs Farm, the home of Matt and John Dixon. More than 275 people arrived in festive Derby Day attire to a lawn complete with a sailcloth tent, southern fare, large screen televisions, lawn games, bluegrass music and more. In addition to having a great time, attendees were raising funds for a worthwhile cause. More than $37,000 was raised for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Athens Regional Medical Center, which recently received Level III status. Athens Regional Medical Center was proud to receive full approval from the Department of Community Health (DHC) to become a Level III neonatal intensive care service provider. Athens Regional is the first and only Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in its 17-county service area.
The Level III designation means ARMC has the capability to provide comprehensive care for infants that range from extremely low birth weight to full term
requiring specialized interventions. The unit also provides advanced
respiratory support, advanced imaging and access to pediatric medical subspecialists such as pediatric cardiologists and pediatric neurologists.
In conjunction with the hospital’s addition of a new heli-stop, the Level III designation allows ARMC to accept babies from other area hospitals in need of advanced medical care.

On June 12, 2015, the 3rd Annual Dogwood Classic was held at the University of Georgia Golf Course. The tournament was presented by the Athens Regional Auxiliary to benefit their signature project, the Healing Garden at ARMC.
The Auxiliary had over 60 volunteers assist during the tournament. Their help made the tournament run smoothly which resulted in a very positive experience for all participants.
This year’s tournament had more players than ever before and because of the support of players, sponsors, Auxiliary members and ARMC employee volunteers, raised more than $34,000 to benefit the Healing Garden.

For over 50 years, the Athens Regional Auxiliary has made significant contributions to Athens Regional Medical Center. The Auxiliary has grown from 13 charter members to its present membership of over 120. During 2015, the Auxiliary welcomed twelve new members: Bob Bitowft, Jody Boling, Tom Carney, Jennie Hoffman, Debbie Jones, Dan Kannan, Kamala Kannan, Don McCann, Marilyn McCann, JK McMullan, Cathy Peck, and Gloria Pylant.
During 2015, the Auxiliary contributed $111,000 raised through special events and the Pink Posy Gift Shop to the Athens Regional Foundation to benefit the Healing Garden. In total, members have donated over $3.1 million to the Athens Regional Foundation to support hospital projects.The Auxiliary also provided $10,000 in
scholarships for future healthcare providers. In total, the Auxiliary has provided over $160,000 in scholarship funds over the past several years.
Since the start of the program, volunteers have donated a total of 556,500 hours of their time and effort to the hospital. This past year over 13,000 volunteer hours were contributed. Volunteers recognized for achieving “Life” status by reaching over 3,000 volunteer hours included Annette Barfield, LaVonda Cheek, and Christine Lo. Dr. Dorris Lillard was also recognized for reaching a milestone of 6,500 volunteer hours.If you are interested in joining the

Since losing my husband to cancer in 1997, the Loran Smith Center has been a place I can go to heal. When I attend the Facing Cancer with Love and Laughter Support Group and hear the stories of survivorship I simply feel better.

In Their Shoes, a 13.1 mile walk benefitting
the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support, celebrated its 10th
anniversary on October 24, 2015. This year’s
walk boasted the most participants to date –
150 walkers – over 300 dedicated volunteers –
and proceeds surpassing $202,000.

Since 1985, Athens Regional Health System employees have contributed over $4.3 million to the Foundation through GIFT – the employee generosity program. GIFT’s impact on campus has been a large one. In FY 2015, two major projects have benefitted the patients we serve on a daily basis: the renovation of the Pediatrics unit, and the upgrade of vital therapy tools for Pediatric Outpatient Rehab.
The Pediatrics floor renovation, a project costing $200,000 to re-paint the entire unit, provide new cardiac monitoring equipment, upgrade exam tables, and purchase new thermometers was a long time in
the making. When GIFT learned of the need, our employees stepped up and made it happen.
Meanwhile, Pediatric Outpatient Rehab was desperate for new therapy tools to replace some that were very old and worn, GIFT was there to help. $25,000 was given to the unit to purchase additional therapy tools, toys, & equipment. Pediatric Rehab consists of Physical, Occupational, Speech, and Feeding Therapists caring for children from birth through full development.
While GIFT supports large projects throughout the Health System, it also continues to support smaller projects through the GIFT Grant program. GIFT awarded $16,000 in grant funding for nine departments at the annual Employee & Volunteer Holiday Party in 2015. The following departments and projects were awarded funding last year: Blood Pressure Assistance
for Home Health Patients; Code Blue Emergency Bag for ED; Gerichair for Patient Safety in General Surgery; Lymphedema Garment Assistance for patients at the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support; New Gel Warmers for Ultrasound; a Pediatric Climbing Wall in Pediatric Rehab; Putting it on the Plate, a Diabetes Education healthy eating program; a Bariatric Patient Recliners for Medical Specialties B.
Established in 1999, The Employee Disaster Relief Fund (EDRF) provides funds up to $1,000 to employees who have experienced sudden financial hardship due to a catastrophic event ranging from the death of an immediate family member or the loss of their primary residence. This year, EDRF provided support for over 25 employees, totaling over $21,000.
In March 2015, Shena Gresham received a phone call she never wanted. Her daughter, Ashley, has sustained a severe head injury in a car accident. Unresponsive, she was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.
With her life now in a whirlwind, Shena had one priority: taking care of her daughter. After many days at Grady, Ashley was finally on the mend. Grateful her daughter was improving,
Shena’s focus turned to how she would cover the medical expenses. An Athens Regional co-worker, Kathy Watson, suggested that she apply for assistance through the Employee Disaster Relief Fund. “I didn’t even know it existed, “ said Shena when sharing her story. “EDRF was such a blessing to me – I could focus on taking care of Ashley because some of my financial burden had been relieved.”
