.5!

&

It's time for us all to break out in a chorus of "The Falling Leaves" as we bid farewell to simmer. Jack and I thank the many of you who added your good wishes and good spirits to our wedding day. It meant so much to us to have you join us. Hal Meden's 1934 Rolls almost stole the show as it carried us to the reception. We don't mind being upstaged by a truly gorgeous vintage auto, and it was the perfect ending to the ceremony. Many thanks, Hal. More thanks go to Dick Dice, who created the "Jean & Jack Get Married" video, which will probably be available at the holiday party for viewing, rental, or sale.

On to business, of which there is a tool-box full. Thanks to Sharon Caxnxnarano for once again opening the warehouse for the quarterly business meeting on Saturday, September 22. Along with Sharon and I, Hal Meden, Jacque Morrison, Dick and Nancy Dice, Mike Miles, Janis and Bob Hauge, and Larry Sharp met to attend to club matters. Thanks to you all for your time, concern, and collective wisdom.

The first order of business was to adjust the annual dues to cover current and anticipated operating expenses. We, as your officers and interested members, want to have adequate funds available to order regalia in cost effective quantities, support a quality newsletter, and fund parties for the membership. After extended discussion, we decided on a plan which appears to be most equitable and will achieve our intent. The dues are increased to $24 per year and are still due January 1. The late fee of $5 remains in effect for dues postmarked after March 1, and the newsletter will stop going to those not current. Once a member is again current, including the late fee, the newsletters will resume. The roster will be printed in March, so if you want to be included, be sure you have paid your dues. We chose to charge new members on a pro-rated plan. The dues will be $2/month for each full month remaining in the calendar year. We will also send them a roster with their first newsletter, which is a new item. Please note, the $2/month fee does NOT apply to renewing members, just new members. Renewing after March 1 will cost $29, $24 plus late fee of $5. A reminder, due to excessive bank charges, dues are payable in U.S. funds.

Please note the holiday party writeup elsewhere in this issue. To assist your volunteer organizers, send Jacque your dinner choices NOW, and have one more item handled. You could make your room reservations now, too, and then all that's left is deciding what to wear, right? Will Bob Adair wear a new gown? Will Jack wear high heels? Be there to find out.

Don't forget to consider and order regalia for the Morgan owner who has everything who is on your holiday gift list.

Moving into 1991, Jack and I are planning a tour of Oregon's historic bridges. We're just beginning the plans, and expect to schedule it just before or after the Labor Day weekend Portland All-Brit. Note your calendars now, as it will be an interesting and fun trip. The year's planning meeting is scheduled for Saturday, January 12, at Carnmarano's warehouse in Olympia. If you have an event in the works, or any other matter of interest to bring to the club's attention, plan to attend. It's an open meeting, with all members welcome.

3 See you at the holiday party December 1 at the Edgewater Hotel, if not before, at a monthly get-together. Jean Tinnea, President

MINUTES OF THE MOG NW 3RD QUARTERLY MEETING

Attending : Bob and Janis Hauge, Hal Meden, Larry Sharp (new member from Canada who is looking for a Morgan!), Dick and Nancy Dice, Sharon Carrnarano (Dave was at SIR racing), Jean Tinnea, Mike Miles, and Jacque Morrison (Dennis was also at SIR racing!). The meeting was held at Cammarano Brothers warehouse in Olympia, Washington, Saturday, September 22nd, 1990. The meeting was called to order a little before 11:00 and adjourned at 12:45. We discussed at length raising our dues from $15.00 to $24.00 per year. The cost of the newsletter will be going up due to a change of copiers for better quality printing and a postage increase will be in effect soon. We also need to purchase regalia at the beginning of the year so we have the items available for the first All British in Vancouver in May of 1991. The subject of raising our dues was discussed up one side and down the other. The outcome being: Renewal dues - $24.00 due January 1st, if postmarked March 1st or later a $5.00 late fee will be charged. The newsletter will stop if dues are not recieved before March 1st. New members - $2.00 per month for remaining months in the year. They will receive roster with first months newsletter. Heinz Stromquist and Dick Dice have again volunteered to search and find new officers for 1991. It was discussed and agreed upon that next year the treasurer position should also maintain the membership roster. I reported the progress made for our holiday banquet - food, time, rooms, parking, etc.

Respectfully yours, Jacque Morrison

MOG-North Social Meeting Sept.20

A lively group of Moggers gathered for pizza and talk on Thursday night, Sept. 20. Our leader, Bob

Nelson, missed the meeting; perhaps he figured that since we had just seen him at the Wedding Party

that was enough for one week. But despite the absence of Nelsons and Amoses and various others we had

a good group: Bells, Niorrisons, Wellingtons (who arrived in a VERY odd-looking Morgan of the MG

persuasion), Dices, Erbecks, Rod Ashton, Jean Tinnea, Daryl Ozuna, Ron Weiskind. Is that all? If you

were there and I misssed you, let me have it. A guest who showed up in a huge Cadillac was Bill

Scheef, former Morgan owner. Bill used to own a four-seater, plus a bright red, right-hand drive, 54

transition-type +4; he sold it long ago to somebody who lived in Seattle, and now he wishes he had it

back. Anyone know where it has gone? Bills Cadillac dwarfed our little Mogs. It was a 29 V-8

dual-cowl phaeton, and there was room for a Morgan in the back seat.

Dave Wellington suggests that we get together for a pot luck and viewing of the Sir John tape, shared

with him by Mike Powley. Well have to try to plan this. Dave Erbeck was full of tales of driving

through Russia with amateur radio types. And that's about all the news. We hope YOU will be at the

next meeting, Oct. 18.

--Nancy Dice

1990 PcrtfandMeet The Annual Portland All-British Field Meet took place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 1 and 2, at

P.i.R., under cooler-than-usual temperatures and even an occasional cloud or two. But still a bit of

shade would have been welcome; we sorely missed the Hauges and their fly. We also missed them, and

their car, and all the rest of you who stayed away for various reasons.

However three 4/4s and their owners made it to the field (the orange and brown of Malcom Buffum, the

blue of Dwight and Meredith Smith, and the red of Davey and Trish Crockett -- with Sarah and Morgan in

tow). There were also three +8s: Ron Weiskinds black and silver, the Dices red, and Jean MacNeil

and Jack Tinneas white and black. Roscoe Nelson and his blue/blue beauty showed up briefly but

fortunately for the rest of us missed out on the Peoples Choice voting. We also had a

three-wheeler in the front row, a little red trike with a J.A.P. engine, owned by Bob Eayrs.

There were eight +4s, including two flat rads (both sets of McClintons made it to the field), two drop

heads (the Huntleys and Hal Meden with his friend Joan), and three 4-seaters (Bob Adair made it from

Idaho, Bob and Loretta Nelson came from Camano Island, and the Jewetts from Seattle). Filling out the

row were Dennis and Jacque Morrison, nearly unrecognizable in their repainted yellow w/ black top.

We all looked very spiffy. But where were the Stromquists? the Wellingtons? the Rogers? the Stegens?

the Powleys? the Bowmans? the Cammaranos? and all the others who have attended in years past? Mike

and Bitsy Miles were there, sans car, as were Doug and Lilo Barofsky (theirs got as far as Albany and

quit); we also saw Giles Greenfield and a few more old friends like Grady Myers.

The Peoples Choice awards this year were given to three Morgan classes, so we picked up lots of

metal. This was especially gratifying to those of us in classes with only three entries -- guaranteed

prizes! What a concept! Why didn't we think of this sooner? So, for the +8s, the order of finish

was Weiskind, Dice, MacNeil. For the 4/4s, it was Crockett, Smith, and Buffum. And for the +4s it

was Mark and Wanda McClinton, Huntley, and Meden. Ron Weiskinds +8 was given a big marble placque

for Best Morgan on the Field. Ron thinks he will hang it in his garage.

After the prizes and a shower back at the niotel , we headed for the 1iles iCCC and a babeqe. Who

should arrive but Jeanne and Rod Ross, newest Morgan owners in Oregon, without their 4-seater but with

stories of its purchase. Bitsy had fixed a big watermelon-full of fruit salad, bags full of tossed

greens, buns and cakes, and Mike slaved over the hot coals grilling chicken. Bunches of little kids

ran around the garden, avoiding the Morgans on the grass, and eventually some of us gathered in front

of the TV to watch what wed done during the day, courtesy of Bob Nelson and his camcorder. Others

ran out of steam and headed for bed.

On Sunday many stayed for the swap meet, while the Dices and various others started the long drive

home. The Portland Meet is always a rather nostalgic affair, since its the last event of the summer

and means that we wont see our good Morgan friends for some time. However this year there is still

The Wedding, and our social gatherings every month, and the big Party in December. So we have things

to look forward to! -- Nancy Dice

The gift exchange is always fun and has become a tradition so here are the rules: Value of the item should not exceed that of a tank of petrol or propane (hrnIrKn the price of petrol has gone up dramatically in the last few months- could be some nice gifts this year!) Each person bringing a gift receives a gift. Last year many of the couples brought two gifts so that both husband and wife received a bauble. To protect the guilty- the exchange is anonymous- so don't put names on them! This years banquet promises to be as much fun as

last years, so see you all there!

MORGAN NEWS

27. Which automobile (excluding Morgan) that is no longer in pro-duction, could be your dream car?

28. Which is your favorite colour?

29. Your favorite painter?

30. Your favorite composer?

31. Your favorite writer?

ANSWERS to questions from MORGAN POST

1. Interest and demand for the Morgan Sports car fluctuates with different factors affecting it. At the moment there is a revival in the idea of the British Sports car of the 1950's which is often nostalgic and forgets some of the disadvantages of the designs of the past. We at Morgans must stay true to first prin-ciples and keep listening to the thoughts of our loyal customers. My grandfather. HFS Morgan. believed in a high power to weight ratio and a simple but effective design. These principles showed often performan-ce and value for money if we use

the most effi-cient engine available in the lightest and strongest chassis we can make. The hand-built craftsmanship of the Morgan gives the car its unique

shape as against more conventional designs and we must constantly seek to improve this quality, which is already high. so that every com-ponent is the best and each job on the car is done perfectly.

2. Driving a Morgan offers a thrill which is not available in mass pro-duced cars. Perhaps a Jaguar D Type or an AC Cobra provides a similar sensation but there are pro-blems if you use these cars every day.

3. The feel of the road and the contact with it through the compo-nents of the car make up the unique experience that is driving a Morgan. In a short time the car inspires great confidence in the driver and his abi-lities.

4. He loves cars and he loves dri-ving them. He is enthusiastic about all aspects of life.

5. Not particular professions. As we see many owners at the factory we are always surprised by the differences rather than the similari-ties.

6. The advertising budget varies from year to year but if the Motor Show is taken into account stands at about £ 75.000 per annum. For free the car receives far more than its fair share of magazine articles and features and will shortly star in a major Hollywood film 'Wars of the Roses" opposite Michael Douglas! Of course though. the best adverti-sing is the owners and that is true all over the world.

7. In G.B. people have waited up to ten years for their car. Dealers are now quoting a waiting period of five or eight years. This is obvious-ly too long and we are taking steps to make more cars.

8. There is a waiting list in all coun-tries where the Morgan is sold. It is longest in G.B. where the publicity and awareness about the car is the greatest. Derek Day tries very hard to be fair in his allocation of cars to dealers and agents.

9. Unfortunately records of the threewheeler Morgans built from 1919 to 1928 have been lost in a fire, but certainly the factory in the early 1920s was producing upwards of 50 cars per week. Production of four wheeled cars has been steady since the war with an average of 400 cars per year produced by the factory.

10. The Morgan Plus Eight starts at 7000 and has now reached 10304. So three thousand three hundred and four Plus Eights have been built at 1.1.90.

11.The Plus Eight will be in pro-duction for many years to come. We shall constantly be seeking to improve the car. The latest high compression 3.9 catalyst car is the best Plus Eight we have ever built.

12. Government legislation means that it is very difficult for a com-pany of our size to introduce end-less new models. We are aware of the need for ultimate performance but this must be balanced by a con-sciousness and concern for our environment. There are certainly many ways an owner can obtain extra performance from his engine. A Plus Eight has been fitted now with a 4.5 litre super charged ver-sion of the Rover engine.

13. We are always on the lookout for new suitable engines. At the moment we are very proud of fitting a 3.9 litre engine in a car weighing 960 kilos (the same as a basic Golf). The Rover 16 valve engine com-plements the Plus Four... and the Ford 1.6 litre EFI engine is an effi-cient unit.

14. Borrani wheels currently have a waiting list almost as long as the Morgan. We are looking at the pos-sibility of a wire wheel for the Plus

Eight. The problem at present is one of weight.

15. We do not like bolt-on wire wheels. We do not like modificati-ons to the bodywork. We do like reworked Rover engines such as those manufactured to Paris-Dakar Range Rover specification.

16. We are not so interested in kits. The car we produce conforms to standards of manufacture through-out the world, this is most important to us.

20. Yes. Unfortunately a total resto-ration can take up to one year due to our need not to disrupt production and the difficulty of making discon-tinued parts for the body.

21. There are many spare parts that are now rare and expensive. It depends on which model he has but I agree that it is vital to main-tain authenticity at all costs.

22. Driving with my father in various models that he was testing. The very first drives ever in a fac-

tory Plus Four Supersports. Plus Four Plus and Plus Eight were all memorable and all immensely exciting. As soon as the pro-totype was finished he would bring it home and we would go out together.

17. Achieving far greater levels of durability on all components through the use of the best coatings and finishings. A new paint process. dipping the ash frame in preserva-tive, zinc plating all visible and invisible fixings and electrostatic coating of all metal parts have trans-formed the car. It is now built with real care using the best components.

18. (Because) the car is so light and well balanced there is less need for ABS than on a laden saloon car. The weight distribution and size of our current brakes enable the car to stop in very short distances when on test.

19. Conservation of resources would have to be even more of a priority than they are today to make a threewheeler a viable proposition. With its light weight and less fric-tion on moving parts it is bound to be more efficient than a four whee-led vehicle.
