THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Board of Governors, the Executive Director (ED) is accountable for the overall management of the Foundation and provides strategic leadership and direction to the staff.

The Executive Director coordinates Foundation activities with outside agencies and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Board of Governors.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Management

• Assume full management responsibility for all Foundation services and activities; administer policies and procedures.

ABOUT ALBERTA REAL ESTATE FOUNDATION The Alberta Real Estate Foundation was established in 1991 to advance the real estate industry and strengthen Alberta’s communities. Created under the Real Estate Act after years of discussion between industry leaders and officials in the provincial government, the Foundation started making an impact right away by funding initiatives to help educate and train real estate professionals. The Act was recently amended, acknowledging that the Real Estate Industry represents four key stakeholder groups: 1.) Residential Real Estate, 2.) Mortgage Brokers, 3.) Commercial Real Estate and 4) Property and Condominium Management.

Over the years, AREF has broadened its scope to fund hundreds of diverse projects in four different areas:

• Community Innovation

• Housing

• Education & Research

• Land Stewardship and Environment MISSION The Alberta Real Estate Foundation supports and originates initiatives that enhance the real estate industry and benefit the people of Alberta.

This dual mandate ensures that the AREF wisely invest public money for the public good of all Albertans and at the same time advances and supports the real estate sector ensuring all four key stakeholder groups are effectively supported.

• Direct and manage the development and implementation of Foundation goals, objectives, policies, and priorities; ensure Board development and communications increase Board ability to make appropriate decisions on a range of strategic issues.

• Provide highly responsible administrative staff assistance to the Board of Governors; direct specific and comprehensive analyses of a wide range of Foundation policies and activities; prepare reports on Foundation activities for Board review.

• Continuously monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of Foundation methods and procedures; assess and monitor workload, administrative systems and internal reporting relationships; identify opportunities for improvement; direct the implementation of changes.

• Plan, direct and manage the Foundation’s work plan; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign projects and responsibilities; review and evaluate program goals and objectives.

• Establish appropriate service and staffing levels; allocate resources accordingly.

Financial Oversight

• Oversee and direct the development and administration of the Foundation budget; direct the forecast of revenues and funds needed for grants, staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; approve expenditures and disbursements; monitor revenues and expenditures and implement mid-year adjustments.

• Negotiate bank interest agreements, contracts and solutions on a variety of fiscal and special projects; analyze and prepare recommendations on special contract requests; monitor appropriate contract budgets.

• Make investment policy recommendations to the Board; liaise with investment agent; monitor investment portfolio; direct investment of short-term surplus funds.

Stakeholder Relationship Building

• Represent the Foundation to outside agencies and elected officials; explain and justify Foundation programs, policies and activities; negotiate and resolve sensitive, significant and controversial issues.

• Represent the Foundation at special events such as industry meetings, conferences.

• Arrange press releases concerning specific Foundation activities; present cheques to grant recipients for special media coverage.

• Be alert to and create opportunities to enhance profile and community awareness of Foundation work.

Strategic Grant Management

• Liaise with other grantmaking institutions, to keep abreast of funding trends, as well as granting opportunities.

• Provide strategic input for grant applications.

• Determine special conditions for approval and funding agreement, sign approval letters and funding agreements for Foundation.

• Responsible for final review of closed files to ensure all conditions and fiduciary responsibilities have been met.

KEY OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES

• Work effectively with the Board to establish strong relationship with all internal and external stakeholder groups.

• Coordinate and deliver an effective strategic planning process with the Board to create and begin executing on a new strategic plan.

• Review and revitalize the granting process; assessing new grant categories, ensuring further clarity is developed around all grant criteria and sourcing a variety of innovative and relevant grant applications.

• Organize a successful 30th AERF anniversary, leveraging this key milestone to continue to enhance partnership opportunities and to foster and re-establish strong relationships with all key stakeholder networks.

• Assist the Board with a Covid-19 recovery plan.

THE PERSON

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will have an appropriate undergraduate degree in business, management and/or leadership, with graduate credentials being preferred. They will have a strong track record of success working with not-for-profit Boards, effectively leading projects and/or programs with a provincial scope. Effective financial management experience is required coupled with an understanding of granting and community investment management. The incumbent will ideally have a background and deep understanding of the real estate sector in Alberta.
