How can I get British nationality?
This is a question commonly
asked by people who want to
know what they can do to receive
British citizenship after learning
that they are eligible to apply for
that specific citizenship.
British citizenship by descent is
what they refer to the kind of
citizenship that children assume
when they are born outside the United Kingdom to a parent/s who is

place and year of birth of a child in order for him or her to acquire the
citizenship.
British citizenship through fathercan be gained. For example, if your
father is born a British citizen and has retained that citizenship up to
the time of the marriage to your mother, then you are entitled to
receive dual citizenship and a British passport.
The necessary documents that one needs to present include: birth
certificate of your father which states his British citizenship, marriage
certificate, among others. You have to secure these, etc. when you do
apply for the citizenship.

citizenship. Some countries would require you to give up your
citizenship if you choose to receive British citizenship. Fortunately for

countries, the UK and South Africa.

South African applicant's grandparents were born in the UnitedKingdom. They have the option to claim, apply and receive Ancestral

They can then nationalize as British nationals, provided that they
provide sufficient intent to live in the United Kingdom permanently.

through the correct qualifications and appropriate presentation of
documents supporting your claim. Applicants should prepare the

as proof that your father or mother is a British citizen at the time of
your birth.
Before the implementation of the 1983 Act, women were not able to
pass on their British citizenship to her offspring.
For those children whose parents were not married at the time of
their birth, the UKBA states:
If the parents were not married when the child was born, but then get
married, the marriage might legitimate the childs birth. If it does, the
child would become a British citizen (and would be regarded as having
been one from birth) if the father was a British citizen (or settled) when
the child was born. Children of a void marriage may also, in somecircumstances, be treated as legitimate.
If you think you are eligible to receive British citizenship, then you
must continue researching the UKBA website. Talk to those who are
well-versed with the rules of citizenship to know about your options.
It pays to have the right knowledge and information pertaining to
important matters such as citizenships.

There are a number of categories of a British national. British citizen,
British subject, British Overseas citizen, are among the kinds. Each
category has limitations and benefits.
For example, a British Overseas citizen may not have an automatic
right to live in the United Kingdom. However, being a British Overseas
citizen enables the applicant to undergo a much easier and simpler
way to acquire British citizenship. An applicant will register instead of
undergoing naturalisation.
BOCs are those men and women who have a connection with a
former British colony, Kenya, for example, and those who did notbecome citizens of the country when it became independent and did
not become British citizens.
Historically, Indians were plenty in Kenya because British colonialists
brought them to the country to build the Kenya-Uganda railway.
Many stayed in the country and have started a new life in Kenya.
(Indian Kenyans were able to retain their culture and religious
practices as evidenced by the presence of Indian temples andmosques around the country.)
The UKBA explains the status of a British overseas citizen:
You became a British overseas citizen on 1 January 1983 if you were a
citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies on 31 December 1982 and
you did not become either a British citizen or a British overseas
territories citizen on 1 January 1983.In most cases, you became a British citizen on 1 January 1983 ifyou
were a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies by birth, descent,
legal adoption, naturalisation or registration in the United Kingdom, or
if you lived in the United Kingdom, while a citizen of the United

Kingdom and Colonies, for at least five years at any time before 1
January 1983.
When it comes to dual citizenship, Kenya only permits the nationality
for minors. At the age of majority, Kenyan citizens must renounce allother nationalities. Minors will lose their Kenyan citizenship during
the age of 21 if they do not renounce their British nationality (BOC)
status.
These BOCs will be de-facto stateless should they reach the age of
majority after July 4 2002, because they cannot receive benefits from
the 2002 Act.

Gaining British Citizenship through Mother
You say you want to gain British
citizenship but you are not sure
whether you are eligible for it.
Let us take this example to
understand if an Australian can
gain British citizenship through
mother.
A young man, born in Australia
in the year 1985, is inquiring
about his eligibility to gain a
British passport:
I just want to know if I am eligible to gain British citizenship through
my mother. I was born in Australia in 1985. So far, I have stayed here in
Adelaide my entire life. My mum was born in the United Kingdom. She
then moved to Australia when she was just 4 years old.

She was a citizen of the United Kingdom until she received Australian
citizenship in 1996. I think this makes me qualified to gain dual
citizenship by descent. But my problem is, I have been going through
the UKBA website to find out what I should do. I find it hard to
understand the terminologies that are being mentioned there.
My father was born in Austria but moved to Australia at a tender age
of 6. He also received Australian citizenship during the year 1994. My
parents got married before I was born.
IsBritish nationality for Australianspossible?
Johnny A. from Adelaide
Will Johnny A. be able to apply? The answer is, yes. He may apply to
get his British citizenship through mother because according to

citizenship your parents had. This may be British citizenship by descent
or otherwise than by descent.
British citizenship may

born outside the United
Kingdom or qualifying
territory and one of your
parents was a British citizenotherwise than by descent,
you are a British citizen by
descent. If you were born
before 1 July 2006 you may
not qualify if your parents
