Are they sitting comfortably – and safely?Your passengers of all sizes need to feel comfortable and safe when you’re driving them. And since 2006, regulations have made it compulsory for children to be properly seated and secured, whether they are in the front or rear of a vehicle.

The UK regulations

The law states that children under 3 years of age MUST travel in a child seat appropriate for their weight, in both the front and rear of vehicles (with the exception of the rear seats in taxis). If an appropriate child seat is not available they are not allowed to travel.

From the age of 3 to 12, a child’s height is the deciding factor. All children up to 135cms (approx. 4’5”) in height must also use an appropriate child seat or booster cushion. This means that a 7 year old who is 140cms tall may use an adult seat belt. An 11 year old who is 130cms tall must use a child seat or booster cushion.

As a driver, if you are convicted of failing to ensure that a child passenger is using an appropriate child restraint or wearing a seat belt according to the legal requirements described above, you could face a fine of up to £500.

AKSE (Automatic Child Seat Recognition)

If a child seat is fitted in the front passenger seat and the passenger airbag is deployed in an accident then there is a risk of serious injury to the child. But if your Mercedes-Benz is fitted with AKSE technology it will automatically detect a Mercedes-Benz child seat that is fitted with the AKSE transponder and disable the airbag.*

ISOFIX

This fastening system used in Mercedes-Benz child seats is a quicker and safer way of fitting the seat in the vehicle. Rather than using the vehicle’s seat belt, as many traditional seats do, it uses a lock mechanism on the seat that engages with a metal bracket secured to the chassis of the car, for secure fixing with a single click.
