    1. SITE GRADINGModify a site’s topographical characteristicsresponding to programmatic and regulatory

    requirements.

    2. SITE DESIGNDesign a site, including building placement, parking, and vehicular and pedestrian circula-tion, responding to programmatic, functional, environmental, and setback requirementsutilizing general site planning principles.

This Exam Section is all about the way abuilding is designed according to its rela-tionship with the existing site.

Unlike Programming, Planning, & Practicewhich is heavier on issues related to zon-ing, history, and other abstract issues, SitePlanning & Design is rst and foremostabout the practicalities related to a given

site. Issues tested here lean towards tac-tile site construction methods, buildingorientation, soil conditions, testing, etc.

That's not to say that theoretical applica-tions aren't tested as well, just that theemphasis here is about how to build ona site. Other tests emphasize social andgovernmental implications more heavily.

    Overview

This vignette exists in order to test your ability to place a basicstructure on a given site and to regrade soil in order to ensurethat site water and drainage will continue to ow properly with-out disrupting existing site features.

The key here is to understand the drawing conventions forcontours. You want to know the dierence between creating aberm and a swale, what each looks like and how to calculate themaximum and minimum slopes of each.

The program will give you the overall existing site, completewith contours. You need to place your given building at the bestlocation possible, indicate its elevation, and then shape the con-tours accordingly to provide adequate site drainage.

    Basic Steps

    1. Place the given building for scale and potential location2. Check the given minimum and maximum slopes provided3. Adjust your building as necessary and conrm elevation4. Adjust Contours for proper drainage5. Check that your solution has met all requirements6. Check Again

    TIPS & TRICKS

You have the opportunity to switch between the Site Gradingand Site Design Vignettes during the Exam. It may help you toglance quickly at both site drawings before you begin, completethe ‘easier’ one to about 90%, and switch to the other. Afteryou’ve nearly nished the second, check both and determinewhat still needs to be gured out. You don’t want to get stuck onone and not nish the other. If you fail either, you fail the entireexam. This method may allow you to at least have a solution forboth that the computer can grade if you get hung up.

Don’t Kill Trees. Period. It’s an automatic fail and Mother Naturewould not be happy with you.

Contours don’t cross, so don’t let them. The only place this iseven remotely possible is for caves. There are no caves on yourexam so don’t get any ideas about crossing contours - for real.

Don’t alter anything beyond the property lines. Would you wantyour neighbor randomly changing the landscape at your house? No, I didn’t think so.

    Overview

This vignette exists in order to test your ability to place variousstructures and provide adequate circulation for pedestrians andservice needs throughout.

The key to remember here is that the program will give you a se-ries of fairly regimented requirements that will begin to ‘design’the solution for you.

Basic Steps1. Read the program thoroughly2. Use given scratch paper to write important relationships3. Place the buildings and sketch preliminary parking4. Draw the parking layout in detail5. Check that you have met all program requirements6. Check again

    TIPS & TRICKS

Practice using sketch tools with some pre-determined parkinglayouts that you know will work for a few types of parking. Ini-tially moving around a sketch rectangle is much easier than theentire group of parking and you’ll want that extra time for moreimportant tasks.

Some trees can die, but be careful of how many. Use the checktool often in order to see how many helpless trees you’ve takenout. Kill too many trees and Mother Nature will give you an au-tomatic fail.

Make sure that you have ‘drive-through’ or continuous vehicularcirculation on your site. There can be absolutely no dead ends. Ifyou have to back up and turn around from anything other thana parking space, you may want to check your layout.

Use the right kinds of trees for the right types of applications.Deciduous trees provide only shade. Coniferous trees views andwind.
