Yes Virginia, There is A Santa ClausEditorial Page,New York Sun, 1897We take pleasure in an-
swering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratifica-tion that its faithful author
is numbered among the friends of The Sun:
Dear Editor—I am 8 years old. Some
of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please
tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?
Virginia O’Hanlon
Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skep-
tical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not com-prehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virgin-ia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as
compared with the bound-less world about him, as measured by the intelli-gence capable of grasp-ing the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beau-ty and joy. Alas! how drea-ry would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no child-like faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tol-erable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extin-guished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to have men to watch in all the chimneys on Christ-mas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus com-ing down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no San-ta Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not,
but that’s no proof thatthey are not there. Nobodycan conceive or imagineall the wonders there areunseen and unseeable inthe world.
You tear apart the ba-by’s rattle and see whatmakes the noise inside, but there is a veil coveringthe unseen world whichnot the strongest man, noreven the united strengthof all the strongest menthat ever lived could tearapart. Only faith, poetry, love romance, can pushaside that curtain andview and picture the su-pernal beauty and glorybeyond. Is it all real? Ah,Virginia, in all this worldthere is nothing else realand abiding.
No Santa Claus! ThankGod! He lives and livesforever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10times 10,000 years fromnow, he will continue tomake glad the heart ofchildhood.

City Improvements Underway In Elkton by Cindy Mitchell
Elkton was recently awarded an Energy Effi-ciency and Conservation Block Grant in the amount of $25,000 to energize the City Hall Building.
The improvements to be done, says Mayor Car-olyn Thompson, include replacing windows and doors, adding insulation and installing a new HVAC unit. “The existing unit has been out of order for
the past year, and the im-provements are all much-needed,” stated the Mayor.
Elkton has applications in for additionial grants including a grant for school safety sidewalks and a new city website, both of which are await-ing approval. The city’s grant for city water line improvements was turned down, Mayor Thompson stated, but asserted Elkton will re-apply.

Community Involvement AsksFor Local Companion ExhibitTo The Smithsonian Exhibition
Local c i t izens and groups are encouraged to contribute to an upcoming exhibit through sharing their photographs, recol-lections and artifacts with the Elkton Historical Soci-ety. “The Way We Worked in Giles County” will ex-plore the unique history of work in Giles County since the early 1900’s.
The local exhibit will complement the Smith-sonian traveling exhibit
“The Way We Worked,” on display in Elkton from January 28 through March 3, 2012.
“The Way We Worked in Giles County” is currently in the planning phase. Dif-ferent areas of focus will include agriculture, in-dustry, family farms, and transportation. Local orga-nizations and individuals are requested to contact the Elkton Historical So-ciety immediately regard-ing loans of photographs, personal stories and arti-facts. It is requested that all items pertain specifi-cally to Giles County.
The more information available about a specifi c item such as names of peo-ple in photographs, age of an item and location will help ensure possible inclu-sion in the companion ex-hibit. Photographs may be scanned and returned to the owner prior to the ex-hibit’s run dates. Various options for story collec-tions are being reviewed for the most accessible op-tion possible.
Artifacts will also be on display in the companion exhibit for all visitors to enjoy.
Examples of artifacts include tools used in ev-
eryday historical life suchas a tobacco press or cot-ton scale. A later example that helps to illustratework in Giles County is acomputer server from the 1970’s. When compared to existing items and meth-ods, artifacts allow a visi-tor to make their own con-clusions regarding prog-ress in the workplace and changing technology.
Individual stories willalso help create a morevivid picture of the evolu-tion of types of work andprocesses and how thishas affected local cultureand communities.
Donna Baker, Execu-tive Director of the GilesCounty Chamber of Com-merce, said “It is such anhonor to have a highly re-nowned Smithsonian na-tional exhibit in our com-munity. The local exhibitwill be so interesting forall generations to see how work was done in the past compared to present day”.
To aide in creating afull and focused localcompanion to the Smith-sonian Museum on MainStreet exhibit, HumanitiesTennessee consultant RobDeHart recently visitedElkton. Members of theTURN TO PAGE A-5

Hunters For The Hungry Fund Fees For Processing Donated Deer In Giles County
Several Tennessee counties including Giles have funding to process deer and deliver the meat to food banks in time for Christmas, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Federation’s Hunters for the Hungry program.
The Tennessee Wildlife Federation’s Hunters for the Hungry program is in-viting hunters across the state to donate harvested deer, so that food banks and soup kitchens have meat to serve hungry Ten-nesseans through the cold-er months.
Between now and Jan. 1, select Hunters for the Hungry processors can accept about 650 deer for free, which would provide more than 100,000 meals. Hunters can simply drop off the deer at a participat-ing processor, and the meat is professionally butchered and distributed to local hunger-relief organiza-tions. A list of processors with funding is available at www.tnwf.org/hunters-for-the-hungry.
Hunters in Giles County may drop deer off at AJ’s Deer Processing at 5680 Minor Hill Highway in Goodsprings, TN. Initially AJ’s could accept 50 deer with the funding already provided by Hunters for the Hungry. You may reach AJ’s by calling 931-
363-3244 to make sure your deer can still be accepted.
“The venison that we receive from Hunters for the Hungry is a real bless-ing, because it is such a high quality and versatile source of protein for those we serve,” said Shannon Niswander, kitchen man-
ager at Room in the Inn in Nashville. “We provide hundreds of meals on a daily basis to folks in our area who otherwise wouldn’t have anything to eat, and they really enjoy the dishes we prepare with venison.”
Based upon available fund-
ing, processors are allotted a quota for the number of deer that Hunters for the Hun-gry will subsidize. Beyond these quotas, any whole deer processed is paid for by the hunter at the same discounted rate, typically $40. All proces-sors are certifi ed by the state department of agriculture.

The Angels gathered near your bed so very close to you,for they knew the pain and suffering you were going through.
We thought about so many things as we held tightly to your hand.Oh, how we wished you were strong and healthy once again.
But your eyes were looking homeward to that place beyond the skywhere Jesus held His outstretched arms. It was time to say goodbye.
We struggled with our selfi sh thoughts. We wanted you to stay, but Jesus knew the answer.
We knew He loved you so.So we gave to you life’s greatest gift, the gift of letting go.
