RELAY FOR LIFE :: June 9-10, 2012
®
I would like to start by extending my humblest appreciation for
entrusting me with the high honour of leading the Ardenne High School
Key Club during the 2012-2013 Key Club year.
Over the years, Key Club has sought to maintain the most
emulative of ideals - Leadership, Inclusiveness, Caring and Character
Building. We take our fun-filled service and initiative to new levels;
taking special pride in the future leaders we create, not just within our
own club, but through Service Leadership Programs which especially
aid the younger members of our K- Family- the Builder’s Club and K-
Kids.
Our very own Ardenne High School Key Club has sought to
uphold a reputation as one of the BEST Key Clubs in Jamaica.
Throughout my tenure as club President, I would not only like to
continue this tradition, but strive to better it. However, I won’t be able
to achieve this alone. With the aid of my Executive Board, we will seek
to strive for new heights through efficient leadership, teamwork and
most importantly- service. I sincerely hope to further cement our motto
“Caring- Our Way of Life” as we seek to make our home, school and
community better one Key Clubber at a time.
I look forward to a year filled with dedicated Key Clubbers
willing to serve, lead and have fun the Key Club way- HYPE! I implore
you all to invite your friends to join in the wonderful experience and I
look forward to seeing you all again as members for the upcoming
years.
LET’S MAKE THIS A YEAR TO REMEMBER!
Yours in Caring and Service,
Romario Perry (President)

With the ELIMINATE Project, Kiwanis International and
UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate Maternal and
Neonatal Tetanus(MNT) – a deadly disease that steals the
lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant
number of mothers each year. Tiny newborns suffer repeated,
painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and
touch. In eliminating this disease, the project will reach the
poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional
lifesaving health care. The end of this disease means the
beginning of better health for so many families.
As a team, we decided that we needed to do our part in the
eradication of this disease from the world. In an effort to raise
funds for the cause, we started with the purchasing of buttons
that read "Ask Me About Eliminate" which were to be worn
by Key Clubbers, who were knowledgeable of the
ELIMINATE Project, in an aid to bring awareness to this
campaign to the rest of the school. Donation sheets were then
circulated throughout the school so that we could raise
enough funds to help support the cause.
For the upcoming year, we would like to continue this
endeavour as the ELIMINATE Project is always in need of
help and we're always willing to assist where we can. We
therefore urge you all to ask your parents, friends, even
strangers for donations, so we can do our part in ridding the
world of Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus.

BIGGER and BETTER YEAR
To me the visit to Sophie’s
Place was one of the best trips
for the year. It was also the
smallest, which was great for
me because Sophie’s place
was small too... if more
people had come It would
have been too disruptive. This
Mustard Seed community is
for disabled children, and
socializing with them was
truly a blessing. Especially
this little boy who was about
our age, and yet he looked
like seven or something. My
favourite part though was
when this little girl lined us up
and instructed us to race. It
was so cute. And also when
we sang and danced to “We’re
all in this together” from High
School Musical with the kids.
What was hilarious was when
one of our members was
trying to feed one of the
children and the child spat out
all the food on her! Over all,
the trip was great and I hope
to visit there again someday.

Matthew 25:40 is Mustard Seed Communites’
second home for children living with HIV,
specifically catering to the needs of teenage boys.
At this project, the Ardenne High School along
with other schools in our division such as
Wolmer’s Boys and Immaculate Conception
High, visited the Matthew 25:40 boys home for
boys who are infected with HIV/AIDS. These
boys were non-stop energy! They continuously
wanted to play, whether it be football, video
games or with our phones... name the game and
they were up for it! This made the visit super fun,
and a bit tiring. I spent most of my time with this
boy who was about my age but was bed-ridden
because he has a rare disease known as “glass
bones”. This means that he can’t move around
much because his bones are very fickle. Yet he
didn’t seem unhappy at all. He was very cheerful
despite his circumstances. This made me more
appreciative of life.

WASHING OF PRAYER HOUSE
AT ARDENNE HIGH SCHOOL
For a “Sacred Place”, this prayer house sure was dirty! When
we went in dirt was stuck on every part of the structure that
you would have forgotten that it was originally painted white.
With the use of a power-hose and a whole lot of soap and rags
we were able to get it to a much better state. Wherever there is
a power-hose you know there is fun and at the end of the day I
think we were wetter than the gazebo which we were washing
down! But the important thing is that when we were finished
with that thing, we could actually recognize the white paint
with which it was originally painted.

This project required the
greatly appreciated help of
our Art teacher, Mr.
Tomlinson. The original
structure which was there
was erected by the
Ardenne High School Key
Club in the 1980’s and I
don’t think it was been
repainted since then.
Therefore, as you can
imagine it was in dire need
of a paint job. And that’s
exactly what we did. The
finished product really
gives a boost to the front
appearance of the school
and allows the school on a
whole to look much more
presentable.

This project was conducted on
December 19, 2011. The aim
of the project was to provide a
Christmas treat for the
teenagers of Mary’s Child.
Mary’s Child is a home for
pregnant teens and their babies
and is one of the only
residential facilities of this
kind in Jamaica. Mary’s Child
accommodates twelve mothers
and their babies for periods of
up to a year. The home
provides academic
instructions, counselling and
skills training to residents with
the goal of providing the
residents with the skills they
need to be successful in their
lives when they leave Mary’s
Child. The experience
certainly taught us an
important life lesson; that one
should never judge another
individual because of their
circumstance, because often
they did not decide the
circumstance which they are
in. Instead we should be
thankful for our situation and
continue to help those in need.
That is, after all what Key
Club is all about.

At this project the
Ardenne High School
Key Club along with
the children from the
Constant Spring
Primary and Junior
High School printed our
hands on a huge wall on
the grade one block of
the school to create a
mural. The project was
indeed messy and
tiring... but a lot of fun
because the children
were like big bundles of
energy! I hope we can
do a project like this
again because I really
like leaving a visual
impact on people’s
lives, as it’s evidence
that we contributed our
services and it will be
there for a long time.

The part of the project that made me really ... well “teary” was the look on the ancillary staff’s faces when we told them that we would be cleaning the entire school for the day. They looked so relieved. Although it was...a lot of work, and I mean a lot, I would do it again just to see that look on their faces. I think Key Club should partner with various other clubs in school to have an Ancillary staff appreciation day. I think it would be a great success

This was done in
appreciation to Mr.
Tomlinson, our art
teacher who had
supported us greatly
throughout the year.
Before the art room was
a tangle of cloth,
posters, random art
stuff and dirt, but we
really made it more...
breathable. It’s about
time we go back
though... I think it’s
messy again!
