HISTORICAL NOTE
The Nebraska Military Department has its origins in an 1854
act of the territorial legislature which provided for a volunteer
militia. Until 1881, two types of volunteer units served: the
militia, which were home defense units which fought within the
borders of Nebraska; and volunteer units, which often fought as
regular army units outside the borders of the state, as in the
Civil War.
The office of Adjutant General for Nebraska was created on
February 15, 1864. In 1871, this office was abolished and its
functions were transferred to the Secretary of State. The present
National Guard was created by the Nebraska Military Code of 1881
and the office of Adjutant General was re-established. When the
Guard was mobilized for federal service in World War I, the state
legislature authorized the formation of home guard units until the
war ended.
The legislature renamed the office of Adjutant General to the
Nebraska Military Department in 1974. The Military Department
functions as a state department of defense for both military and
non-military operations. Its main mission is to provide units for
the reserve component of the U.S. armed forces to be mobilized in
case of national emergency or war.
Further information about the military history of Nebraska and
specific military units which served may be found by consulting
secondary sources available in the historical society library.
