FIMS – a Framework for Interoperable Media Services

A joint EBU – AMWA initiative since 2010

FIMS 1-0 with file transfer, transform and acquisition services (Tech

3356 series)

Phase 2 will address repositories and quality control (in collaboration

with EBU QC group).

Ready for archive and preservation workflows

Many manufacturers: list is too long but 2 early adopters are IBM

and Sony.

Many users in the FIMS Business Board chaired by Turner: ABC,

AD-Id, AMWA, BBC, Bloomberg, CBC, Cognizant, EBU, ESPN, Fox,

HBO, ITV, Metaglue, MLB, MTV, NBCU, NFB, NRK, RAI, RedBee

Media, PBS, Sony, Triskel, Turner Asia Pacific, Turner UK, TV-

Globo, Viacom

What we are doing: FIMS

FIMS: SOA for media

FIMS received the IBC 2012 Judges’ Prize and will be present again at

NAB 2013 (conference and booth)

EUScreen and soon EUScreenXL – a portal to European AV archives

Europeana, the European Digital Library to which EUScreen

contribute with Linked Open Data

TOSCA-MP, a project for the development of automatic extraction

tools. EBU is promoting FIMS interoperability

EBU – NRK Eurovision archives project

Other archive and preservation related projects

EBUCore of course – the Dublin Core for Media

Available in XML and RDF including classification schemes

EBU is developing an MXF SDK for EBUCore

All scenarios: embedded xml and KLV or side-car xml (or else)

EBUCore is being registered to SMPTE and EBUCore proposed to

make it the SMPTECore (new project being launched with the

support of EBU and Movilabs.

EBU will propose the use of EBUCore or SMPTECore to extract

technical dynamic metadata starting from Sony’s SMPTE RDD 18 –

acquisition metadata from tapeless camcorders

EBUCore ontology, Linked Open Data, etc.

What will be done to publish e.g. metadata published in the schema-

org format or else.

Metadata

MPEG (AND ITU, AND W3C, AES, ETC.)

Of course we also keep an eye on MPEG :--)

My colleagues or connected EBU members are involved in

audio and video activities in MPEG

We are also involved in Loudness, EBU-TT and other

signal aspects that will require due attention when

developing archive and preservation solutions

o The XML subtitles / EBU-TT activity is an important

matter for archives. EBU STL (3264) was originally

designed for that purpose

We have proposed the new AVDP metadata profile

We are in the MP-AF : where will it go?

AND MANY OTHER ASPECTS

MXF and its various profiles defined in AMWA Application

Specifications or SMPTE/IMF (overlaps with AXF?)

Linked open data preservation rules for external resources.

Hybrid TV and second screen applications, conternt and

metadata: how to bext save the Internet for broadcasters?

Etc.
