  • INTRODUCTION

    The Directory of Community-based Residential Centres in Canada is publish-ed as a public service by the Ministry of the Solicitor General Canada.

    The Directory contains a listing of community-based residential centres, both government and privately operated, which provide residential and related services to offenders, ex-offenders and those in need of shelter and accommodation.

    The residents of halfway houses belong to different categories (Day Parole, Full Parole, Mandatory Supervision) and take up residence in every type of community setting ranging from large metropolitan centres to small villages. Accordingly, a variety of residential programs exist to serve the varying needs and geographic imperatives.

    Programs range from basic room and board to structured therapy programs. In summary they include:

    • Private Home Placement — room and board in a private residential setting;

    • Non-structured Residential Programs — nnulti-purpose centres with minimum intervention such as hostels, YM/YWCAs, some CRCs with limited programs;

    • Structured Programs (CRCs) — clearly defined programs designed for the needs of parolees, including admission and release policy and struc-tured counselling and assistance services;

    • Special Programs — generally dealing with addiction problems.

    For more information on the type of programs offered by a particular cen-tre, please contact the centre directly.

    The directory is distributed free of charge to the individual centres, federal and provincial institutions, corrections officials, private agencies and in-terested groups and individuals. The information printed in the directory is updated every two years and is supplied by each centre.

    Requests for copies and suggestions for additions, deletions or other changes should be forwarded to the office of the Director, Community Release Programs, Offender Programs Branch, The Correctional Service of Canada, 340 Laurier Ave. West, Ottawa, Ontario KlA 0P9. (See amend-ment page at the back of the directory.)

    NOTE: Centres marked with an asterisk (" ) are under contract to the Ministry of the Solicitor

    General Canada for the provision of residential services to persons on parole, man-

    datory supervision and temporary absence.
