Design, at its essence, is a captivating force that translates our creativity and richest ideas into a dialogue of limitless interpretations. Because it is so varied, its practice must be thoughtful, considered, and ever-evolving. Design is not just about creating but about contributing one’s passion towards society. With this said, architecture has the ability to reinforce society’s best intentions if its design is sensitive to society’s needs. Thus there is the importance of the design process in which it presents an opportunity of exploration as a tool of understanding. These considerations make a difference and emphasize that quality of what makes architecture, not merely a building form. With that in mind, the architect must understand a broad spectrum of such ideas and experiential qualities within the elements of design. It is then that architecture would be defined as a collaborative force among its users and surroundings. Architecture is the result of this collaboration of idea, experience, and especially intention.

The nature of structural systems, including long-span structures, affects and informs architectural design. With a series of explorations such as determining the genius loci, the spirit of the place, and dealing with structural emphasis in order to have a holistic language, the Tybee Island marine research facility establishes its presence as a gateway to the natural and manmade environment.

tybee islandis only two and a half miles long and two thirds of a mile wide however its strategic location near the mouth of Savannah assigned to it an important role in the birth and state of Georgia.

This being so Lazaretto Creek is proven to be an important bio diverse area which is in vital need of care and protection. This site is considered to be an estuary which has a wide variety of unique and delicate wildlife.

Within a main structural system another complimentary element aids with the broad spanning between the primary structure, also using beam bracing to withstand lateral forces. Again reinforcing the idea within codependency of elements within architecture and achieving a oneness within the design.

With the use of physical study models, a structure was developed in order to recognize the distinct elements that help maintain the identity of the place. The structure is an opportunity to understand the central core of how an idea could be communicated through an architectural language being subject to the physical laws. Tybee’s gateway would act as a symbol of the place in which one could perceive the presence of its people and its marine life.

There are ways in which a building’s site and environmental context influences architectural design. With the study of the idea of place and other existing elements, a process of analysis of context would provide a dialogue of spaces respectful to the site. The program is an extension of the architecture department at the University of Maryland.

site panorama

The site that was acquired is between the architecture department and the social science department. Within the architecture department there is a rich history of the faculty and student relationship which defines it. With the extension of the school, more studio spaces and faculty offices are needed reason why its purposeful to have an appropiate approach that still demonstrates the institution culture and respects the surrounding context.

The new facilities provide not only abundant spaces for the whole school but provides an environment in which there is a shifting language of “old” and “new”. The addition is essentially an example of how changes wouldn’t be overwhelming to our surroundings and would not completely detach or be secluded from the existing.

Issues of new architecture in existing high density urban environments with complex social and cultural characters were explored within this project. Studies of urban context and building types are required to reinforce a richer understanding of a complex environment. Located in downtown Washington D.C., the James Monroe Public Library is considered a vertical element of a public domain within the city’s organization.

james monroepublic library

26

Page 36: Architecture Portfolio - Jorge Concepción

With this idea of “containment” and what the eclectic fabric of Washington D.C. is composed of, the library is essentially built by a form attaining most of what could be considered the “served” spaces that depend on these two heavy elements that act as the foundation in order to withhold the central form. Emphasizing the way this light element represents what we consider the content being held by the human intervention of these forms.

Page 37: Architecture Portfolio - Jorge Concepción

With the massing studies and other representational work, a development of this idea is better grasp by this notion of having a main truss system between these two heavy elements in order to elevate the main form above the ground level.

Since the early uses of what was considered a library, there have been certain manipulations that caused this idea of attaining knowledge to be changed into a basic media container. This has blinded our perspective and has caused a fragmented lost memory of what a library truly was. Libraries were thought of being storage like spaces for books and any kind of record within our history. Today these spaces could be transformed to have a cohesive interaction of our modern technological digital media still with the essence of a library.

Since the Greeks and historic figures in the Renaissance, proportional qualities have been highly considered within how one orders a certain composition, being space or music. With this widely known relationship of music and architecture, the conservatory evokes this idea of a harmonic condition, were symmetry and asymmetry creates a certain dialogue within a compostion.

the diagram above demonstrates the overlapping propotional qualities seen within the site and the program.

Construct of Place: an exploration of meaning in San JuanSAN JUAN, PRGRADUATE THESIS 2013

Page 71: Architecture Portfolio - Jorge Concepción

A lack of character within the public realm raises certain questions about meaning and place. By examining these elements and the origin of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, a placement of a church would be provided in order to provide a sense of place in the capitol district where there is none. Provide a re-interpretation of a church within the axis of what is the house of power would be vehicle of self-discovery in which provides a means of understanding man and its environment.
