Piazza Brunelleschi Florence, Italy

3

For this project we were asked to analyze and redesign Piazza Brunelleschi in Florence, Italy. This piazza currently serves as a parking lot and also contains the entrance to University buildings. We were required to design a library for both students and the public, and a student residential building, which would be located on the piazza. Although the building is one entity, it houses two distinct functions: one public and one private. The building is designed as two

overlapping volumes and its location in the site divides Piazza Brunelleschi into two contrasting piazzas, one for each of the functions. The library faces Brunelleschi’s rotunda to the North, and the student housing faces the South. Within the building there are diverse spaces, which are either open or contained. The library and housing each have a large flexible space with a curtain wall that faces its piazza. These spaces are bordered by smaller and more private rooms.

The building contains two contrasting materials. Pietra Cardoso is a traditional, locally quarried stone and is the prominent material used in the library. The student housing contains a double skin constructed of perforated Corten Steel panels, which serve as shading devices and can be opened or closed. These panels are also used on the interior of the student courtyard.

This is a contemporary redesign of the facade of existing row houses located in Boston, Massachusetts. It is made up of a screen of vertical copper pieces, that twist as they extend upwards. Additionally, we were asked to design ADA bathrooms for the row house units.

The Creative Arts Center, located in the center of the Roger Williams University Camus, was designed as a space where the public and students from all different studies can come together to express their creativity and expose their talents. The public spaces are located towards the North, which faces the main entrance to campus. The student spaces are located to the South, facing the campus.

This concrete building has a rectangular footprint, which is divided into zones that each has a specific purpose. There is a corridor along both the East and West sides of the building, where most of the movement through the building occurs. The East and West walls are predominantly glazing. The corridors extend to the glazed South facade allowing views through campus. Solid interior walls are clad with colorful Trespa paneling, which in some places extends to the exterior.

Campus Shuttle Terminal Bristol, RI

Water is an important symbol of Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, because the campus is located along Mount Hope Bay. For this reason, the parti of the Campus Shuttle Terminal is a wave. The wave is represented by a curving, white frosted glass canopy that shelters all pedestrian areas and serves a a roof to the indoor waiting room. It begins as a lower scaled covered walkway along the Eastern side of the building. As it moves South the canopy grows taller and extends out to the East, sheltering the student drop-off area, and to the West where it covers the indoor waiting area and also serves as a sheltered connection to the parking garage. The canopy is supported by steel tree-like structures.

Roman Catholic Church Providence, RIThis Roman Catholic Church was designed as two overlapping geometries, which correspond to the shapes of its surrounding buildings. At the intersection of these geometries there is a tower, where a cutout of the symbol of the cross lets sunlight stream in. On the front facade there is a large glass partition that folds upwards, allowing the interior worship space to extend to the exterior.

We were asked to design a poster of a fun new clothing line for Roger Williams University. The concept of my new line is cats, poking fun at the fact that there are many stray cats that live on campus.
