Research Center+Community HubLake Michigan, Chicago, IL

This studio addresses the issue of contemporary public space and public natural resources through the twinning of infrastructure and a complex com-munity-based program on a water-based site.

Design a landscape to slow and filter polluted water flowing between the Chicago River and Lake Michigan; and, each architect student design a building with a dual program: a Community Hub which in this case is sports complex and Research Center for the study of invasive species.

In this individual building, a research center of sea lamprey and a commu-nity sports complex are being merged together.

The research center program includes labs, offices, indoor fish tank, admin-istration offices and supporting areas; the sports section provides a swim-ming pool, a tennis court, two basket-ball courts, a indoor gymnasium, and supporting functions.

Filter Island: Plan

Take the body shape and moving pat-tern as the concept of the initial circu-lation.

First massing model: based on the early idea of each architecture stu-dents gets as much land as needed.

Spreading all the program on a flat site and connect each building by different paths.

After the collaborative decision, each student will get approximately size of 200 ft x 200 ft “island”. Instead of spreading the program horizontally, arranging the program vertically be-comes necessary.

Filter IslandResin Modeling

The final model in 1/16” scale is de-cided to be made by casting resin.

It required the steps of making molds, mixing the resin, casting, polishing, and laser etching.

Before the step of casting, the struc-ture components(trusses) was hot glued onto the mold.

The whole building height curtain wall system bring the maxim amount of day lighting.

The “overhanging skylight” creates extra sun light path for the lobby.

On the east part of the building, dou-ble skin system is introduced to keep a more stable indoor environment for dance studios and also creates more privacy for the dancers who don’t want to be seen from the street while they are practicing.

Client: Bronzeville Neighborhood Food Access/Community Center

43rd and Prairie, Chicago, IL

The project of Bronzeville Food Ac-cess is initiated to increase the com-munity activity and to provide more food potions in the area of food desert.

There are several key parameters have to be considered as the guides of the design:

-What is the best kind of facility to be introduced to influence the community in the best way?

-How to use the healthy food resource and community history/culture as a key to build a better neighborhood?

-How does the building attract people from community - how to make a strong relationship between residents and the building?

After the group discussion, restaurant, cafe, community kitchen and history gallery is decided to be the core pro-gram of the project. And additionally, music performance is introduced as the key attraction for the neighbor-hood.

Nautilus TowerMain Material: Cardboard Tubes

IIT Campus, Chicago, IL

This is a group project that requires significant structural knowledge and high crafting skills.

As a final examination of semester-long structure studying, students are asked to show their ability of handling complex structure problems with aes-thetic consideration.

In the group of six, we started with concept of natural spiral shape, then as design processing we adapted the idea of double spiral which came from the idea of DNA chain. The main mate-rial of the tower is cardboard tubes in order to minimize the weight of the whole structure.
