The Music and Film school was a project I designed for a fourth year design studio. The project was presented as part of an exhibition in the Architecture and Design School on Vivian street in 2010. The complex is intended to be a modern facility for Victoria University’s School of Music and Massey University’s Film School. The proposed design is to be located in Newtown, Wellington neighbouring Toi Whaakari, School of Dance and Drama.

This project generated from an in-depth site analysis, which outlined the key design concept derived from the limited site views. Whilst studying the site, fixed view points only occur at certain areas which offered interesting challenges to work with throughout the design. Therefore looking at the constraints of a film or photo’s edge, and their limitations due to the ‘frame’ has influenced my design concept. The idea of a ‘faceted’ design was an important feature to my overall form and appearance and has been used to enhance one’s view of the new structure from certain view points. The form consists of many straight edges and facets at skew angles, creating areas around the building that define a ‘frame’ of a particular area of the building. Impressions of folds or cuts are achieved by the seamless edges and junctions between; wall-roof, wall-floor, ceiling-wall, glass-concrete, interior finishes ect.The project requirements included construction documents, service and plant design as well as a structural analysis of our design. This project has been developed by myself under the supervision of my tutor, Martin Hanley and collegues.

The Upper Hutt Library was a project I designed for a third year design studio. The proposal was for a newly developed community center located in Upper Hutt, Welliongton. The scheme developed a unique structural system consisting of hundreds of extremely slender steel columns which propped the ‘canopy-like’ roof. The concept was derived from the local bush and forest, which functions as a natural ecosystem using the shelter of the existing canopy above to nurture the young undergrowth. The design was intended to create a large local lounge that retracted from using walls to define spaces, but rather used the structural columns to seperate the rooms and ‘zones’ of the library.

I completed this project in the final semester of 2009, with support from my tutor Andrew Charleson andcollegues.

Victoria University Lecture Theater’s is a design project i designed for a second year design studio. Victoria University’s Architecture and Design campus was the site for this design of two rooftop classrooms and another lecture theater on ground level. This project was completed in 2008. The basis behind the design was to integrate sustainability into the buildings functionality through a rooftop garden and solar collection suite.

This project was tested for acoustic and lighting performance through Ecotect software.
