UAE Power Outlook on UAE Power Outlook on
Supply / DemandSupply / Demand
Total installed capacity in UAE has increased
from 0.5 GW in 1971 to 19.8 GW in 2008
Energy consumption increased by 9.3% in UAE
in the past few years (13% in Dubai alone) as
compared to 5% internationally
Heavy oil is used during recent summers
which costs about (AED 0.9 / kWh) with an
increase of 30% CO2 emission
Summer electricity consumption in UAE is four
times that in winter
Very Little attention is given to generation mix
We need to benchmark energy wasted both on
the supply and demand side
Policy makers need to embrace Sustainability
by shifting attention from initial Capital
Investment to Life Cycle Cost
Using efficient A/C systems (1.0 kW/ton)
instead of 1.5 kW/ton saves over 680 million
Dirhams in 4 summer months in UAE alone at
the current peaking load of +19 GW
Other measures in saving energy can be
realized (e.g., lighting fixtures, electric motors,
improving power factor, etc.)

“We recognize that preserving our
energy resources will be one of the
greatest challenges in our drive
towards sustainable development.
This, however, will not materialize
unless the different facets of our
society adopt energy conservation
principles in their core values. The
future generations will be the chief
beneficiary of our achievements
and the best judge of what we
accomplish in this field.”His Highness Sheikh Mohamed
Bin Rashid Al Maktoum,
UAE Vice President, Prime
Minister and Ruler of Dubai
